The Mau Mau, a violent and secretive Kikuyu society, aimed to restore the proud tribe's pre-colonial superiority and rule.  The 1940s saw initial targeting of Africans working for the colonial government and by 1952 the situation had deteriorated so badly that a State of Emergency was declared.  The plan for mass arrests leaked and many leaders and supporters escaped to the bush where the gangs formed a military structure.  Brutal attacks on both whites and loyal natives caused morale problems and local police and military were overwhelmed.  Reinforcements were called in, and harsh measures including mass deportation, protected camps, fines, confiscation of property and extreme intelligence gathering employed were employed.  War crimes were committed by both sides. As this well researched book demonstrates the campaign was ultimately successful militarily, politically the dye was cast and paradoxically colonial rule gave way to independence in 1956.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49518303674641,"sku":"GOR009315703","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49573954846993,"sku":"GOR010608056","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49734551208209,"sku":"NGR9781473864573","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53073646747921,"sku":"CIN1473864577VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1473864577.jpg?v=1751449093"},{"product_id":"british-military-intelligence-book-nick-van-der-bijl-9781445662381","title":"British Military Intelligence","description":"Through a mix of objects, medals, photographs and documents held in the Military Intelligence Museum, the book tells the story of British military intelligence across the years, moving from its earliest object of the Waterloo medal awarded to the Duke of Wellington’s senior intelligence officer to items recovered from operations in Afghanistan. This fascinating collection includes a Boer War photographic stereoscope and uniforms worn by intelligence officers and other ranks during the First World War. Among the Second World War objects are a very rare highest gallantry medal awarded to a British officer by France, items that belonged to a founder of the Long Range Desert Group, an example of a pigeon coop used to deliver pigeons in Occupied Europe, a chess set used by captured Special Operations Executive operatives in Buchenwald concentration camp and copies of forged rations coupons dropped into Germany as part of Psychological Warfare Executive operations. The end of the war saw the Intelligence Corps heavily involved in arresting war criminals in Germany and Japan; among the objects are handcuffs used by a Field Security Section in Occupied Germany to arrest three high-ranking Nazi officials. During the Cold War, the Intelligence Corps role in collecting intelligence from those organisations hostile to British interests and protecting the Army from espionage, sabotage and terrorism is illustrated by several documents.  The varied nature of these objects illuminates a feature of British military operations that is rarely discussed, despite having been frequently proven to be crucial to their success. Knowledge Gives Strength to the Arm – the Intelligence Corps motto.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49526390522129,"sku":"GOR010066637","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445662388.jpg?v=1777714668"},{"product_id":"victory-in-the-falklands-falklands-war-book-nick-van-der-bijl-9781844154944","title":"Victory in the Falklands: Falklands War","description":"The Hundred Days that saw the British response to General Galtiere of Argentina's invasion of the Falklands are for many British people the most remarkable of their lives. Even accepting that there are aspects of the Corps' activities that cannot be revealed, there is a great wealth of fascinating material here for those interested in intelligence gathering.  During WW2 over 400 members served with SOE, Field Security Sections carried out counter-intelligence tasks at home and overseas, liaising with foreign services where appropriate.  Intelligence gathering for commanders at all levels has been a key role using Sigint, human sources, interrogation and other covert ops.  The Corps captured many key German and Japanese war criminals.  During the Cold War Intelligence Sections were a vital part of all HQs above Brigade level and worked regularly with the SAS, SBS, RM Commandos, GCHQ and M15.  Air photography working in close cooperation with the RAF is a vital source of intelligence and plays a crucial role in Afghanistan using satellite and drone imagery, a far cry from the days of balloons. This officially supported history reveals much fascinating material about the activities of this highly specialist and often top-secret Corps.  It will be mandatory reading for intelligence experts and enthusiasts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49530733560081,"sku":"GOR006306884","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1848844131.jpg?v=1750725133"},{"product_id":"nine-battles-to-stanley-book-nick-van-der-bijl-9780850526196","title":"Nine Battles to Stanley","description":"Nine Battles to Stanley is a soldiers account of the ground fighting on South Georgia and the Falklands. Great Britain successfully defended the base for the rest of The Great War and throughout the Second World War.  The period after 1945 was one of rising tension as Great Britain drew down its Imperial commitments from the Near and Middle East.  Britain's intention to retain a military base in Aden was rejected by Egypt, who, having embarrassed Great Britain during the 1956 Suez Crisis, set about supporting Yemeni aspirations with subversion, in concert with the Soviet Union and China.  This led to Aden coming under increasing pressure from Yemeni nationalism during the late 1950 and early 1960s.  When an attempt was made to murder the British High Commissioner, a State Emergency was declared. Initially, while operations were confined to the mountainous Radfan region near the border, the internal security of Aden became increasingly fragile as nationalists escalated attacks on the Security Forces and Service dependants with grenade, shootings and bomb attacks in the narrow streets. When the British declared that they would leave in 1967, the British forces were caught up in interfactional fighting with 20 June 1967 proving a black day with twenty British soldiers murdered.  This led to the famous occupation of Crater district by Lt Col 'Mad Mitch' Mitchell and his Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.  By November that year, after conducting a masterly withdrawal in contact, the British left Aden for good.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49643875008785,"sku":"GOR007077604","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49738198810897,"sku":"NGR9781783032914","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49781997175057,"sku":"GOR011564353","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50778493845777,"sku":"GOR009731088","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/178303291X.jpg?v=1751437408"},{"product_id":"confrontation-the-war-with-indonesia-1962-1966-book-nick-van-der-bijl-9781783030187","title":"Confrontation: The War with Indonesia 1962-1966","description":"For over four years in the 'Swinging Sixties' the armed forces of the UK were engaged in a little publicised but crucial jungle war against communist aggressive on the vast island of Borneo. Nick van der Bijl was a Staff Sergeant and his role meant that he was expected to provide accurate intelligence to Brigade Headquarters and deploy specialist skills. Little was known about the Argentine threat and so the Intelligence Section was very heavily involved in collecting, collating and distributing intelligence from a variety of sources, initially from the UK and after landing at San Carlos Water, also from documents, prisoners of war, and a counter-intelligence operation. On 21 May, 3 Commando landed at San Carlos on East Falklands and a week later defeated the Argentinian garrison at Goose Green. Within the week 5 Infantry Brigade landed and by the middle of June, both brigades liberated Port Stanley against a numerically superior force. Perceived to be an attempt by communists to destabilise the Sultanate and seize power, within twelve hours of its outbreak, British forces were despatched by ship and aircraft from Singapore to restore order, the first unit to arrive being 1\/2nd Gurkhas, who entered the capital. Within the week, the 1 Queens Own Highlanders had recaptured the strategically important oilfields and occupied Seria, 42 Commando, Royal Marines attacked Limbang and 1 Green Jackets landed in west Brunei. The next six months were spent rounding up TNKU and, since there were major concerns that Indonesia could be behind the Revolt, the charismatic Major General Walter Walker, then commanding 17th Gurkha Division, was sent to Brunei to command operations. By mid-May 1963, the surviving TNKU had been captured. While rapidly suppressed, the Revolt was the catalyst for the three year Confrontation with Indonesia 1963-66.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49741704954129,"sku":"NGR9781399013543","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51596098863377,"sku":"GOR012209294","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1399013548.jpg?v=1751146504"},{"product_id":"my-friends-the-enemy-book-nick-van-der-bijl-9781398115422","title":"My Friends, The Enemy","description":"‘On the beach the Lieutenant asked if he could say a prayer before being shot. “Don’t be so bloody silly,” I replied, “get into the boat.”’  My Friends, The Enemy recounts the Falklands War from the viewpoint of the only Intelligence Corps in HQ 3 Commando Brigade and serving with its Intelligence Section of Royal Marines, It is a personal account supported by intelligence assembled since 1982.  Nick van der Bijl was a Staff Sergeant and his role meant that he was expected to provide accurate intelligence to Brigade Headquarters and deploy specialist skills. Little was known about the Argentine threat and so the Intelligence Section was very heavily involved in collecting, collating and distributing intelligence from a variety of sources, initially from the UK and after landing at San Carlos Water, also from documents, prisoners of war, and a counter-intelligence operation. While the intelligence proved to be accurate throughout the campaign, some has been controversial, particularly relating to the Battle of Goose Green. Van der Bijl was one of the first into Stanley after the Argentinian surrender and was part of an intelligence operation that searched enemy HQs for documents and selected several hundred officers for further interrogation.  My Friends, The Enemy is the first time that the story of intelligence operations has been told by a witness to events in the Falklands from the start of the campaign to the finish.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49741999407377,"sku":"NGR9781398115422","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50120461287697,"sku":"GOR013862615","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52858697089297,"sku":"GOR014645089","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1398115428.jpg?v=1764065144"},{"product_id":"5th-infantry-brigade-in-the-falklands-book-nick-van-der-bijl-9781783462636","title":"5th Infantry Brigade in the Falklands","description":"For many people it was 3 Commando Brigade, commanded by Major General Julian Thompson, and made up of Royal Marines and Paras that recaptured the Falklands. Yet 5th Infantry Brigade played a key and until now little acknowledged role in this extraordinary saga. Cobbled together in haste (having been stripped of its assets to bring 3 Commando Brigade up to strength), it comprised principally of two Guards battalion (2nd Scots and 1st Welsh) and the Gurkhas. Many felt it was inadequately trained when it sailed from Southampton on the QE2 and this view was given substance by early disasters such as the tragedy at Bluff Cove. Yet by the end, its contribution, of which Tumbledown is the best known, could not be denied. Alongside Poles, Frenchmen, Dutchmen, Belgians and Norwegians, the unit included a small number of remarkably brave German and Austrian refugees. These commandos took part in daring raids, intelligence missions and conventional infantry battles, earning many decorations for gallantry and leadership.  Detailing the wartime exploits of these courageous fighters, some of whom went on to form the nucleus of their liberated nations' new special forces, this book gives an insight into a fascinating unit that is often overlooked.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50011489927441,"sku":"GOR003938659","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50165143798033,"sku":"GOR008825743","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50401713357073,"sku":"CIN1841769991G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1841769991.jpg?v=1777370879"},{"product_id":"5th-infantry-brigade-in-the-falklands-war-book-nick-van-der-bijl-9780850529487","title":"5th Infantry Brigade in the Falklands War","description":"For many people it was 3 Commando Brigade, that recaptured the Falklands. Even accepting that there are aspects of the Corps activities that cannot be revealed, there is a great wealth of fascinating material here for those interested in intelligence gathering. During WW2 over 400 members served with SOE, Field Security Sections carried out counter-intelligence tasks at home and overseas, liaising with foreign services where appropriate. Intelligence gathering for commanders at all levels has been a key role using Sigint, human sources, interrogation and other covert ops. The Corps captured many key German and Japanese war criminals.  During the Cold War Intelligence Sections were a vital part of all HQs above Brigade level and worked regularly with the SAS, SBS, RM Commandos, GCHQ and M15.  Air photography working in close cooperation with the RAF is a vital source of intelligence and plays a crucial role in Afghanistan using satellite and drone imagery, a far cry from the days of balloons.  This officially supported history reveals much fascinating material about the activities of this highly specialist and often top-secret Corps. It will be mandatory reading for intelligence experts and enthusiasts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51828651229457,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51828651262225,"sku":"GOR013307523","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781526774958.jpg?v=1752762252"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-nick-van-der-bijl.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
