He is also demeaning, manipulative, controlling and competitive. After the early stages of a relationship, the non-narcissist is usually left questioning what's in it for her. In this first book for the intimate partners of narcissists readers are empowered with specific steps they can take to limit the effect of their partner's behaviour, and get what they need out of the relationship. Readers learn the 5 types of destructive narcissism and how to recognize their effects on the relationship. They are assured that they are not helpless, and that they needn't give up on the relationship. Instead, realistic strategies are suggested for learning to set mutually agreed upon behaviours that will fulfill both partners' needs. Readers learn to change \"fantasy\" expectations, create boundaries, listen and respond in a self-caring manner, and learn when to avoid and ignore especially bad behaviour. Brown teaches them how to stop feeding into a narcissist's self-focus with subtle behavior cues - such as acting distracted when he vies for attention. Ultimately readers will achieve a degree of understanding and separation that will help them see the partner and themselves in a new light.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49505977663761,"sku":"GOR004117565","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50172147695889,"sku":"CIN1572243546G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50177176928529,"sku":"CIN1572243546A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50405832982801,"sku":"CIN1572243546VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53338622492945,"sku":"GOR014858859","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53356809552145,"sku":"GOR008179031","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1572243546.jpg?v=1750959710"},{"product_id":"children-of-the-self-absorbed-book-nina-w-brown-9787515505190","title":"Children of the Self-Absorbed","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49513885008145,"sku":"GOR013040305","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B009A5KWF4.jpg?v=1751318704"},{"product_id":"children-of-the-self-absorbed-book-nina-w-brown-9781572242319","title":"Children of the Self-absorbed","description":"This guide teaches the grown-up how to identify destructive patterns due to parental self-absorption, and how to deal with the results. Narcissists rarely have trouble finding work, since they usually make a good first impression and their inflated sense of self often looks like impressive self-confidence to a recruiting employer. But that same self-centered and arrogant worldview typically leaves the people they work with feeling discredited and unrecognized in the shadow of the narcissist's spotlight. In positions of power, narcissists ask employees to accommodate unreasonable demands and are prone to shift the blame to others for their own mistakes. In Working with the Self-Absorbed, psychologist Nina Brown provides a hands-on, no-nonsense approach to coping with narcissistic bosses and co-workers. Readers learn that they are not helpless against a narcissistic coworker and that they needn't consider giving up their rights or their job. Realistic strategies are suggested for changing expectations, responding in a constructive manner, not taking things personally, and deciding when it's best to ignore especially outrageous behavior. Readers go on to learn how to gain the validation they deserve and establish a separate but equal work environment.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49614167212305,"sku":"GOR006875649","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49786829406481,"sku":"CIN1572242922G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50604923486481,"sku":"CIN1572242922VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53020390228241,"sku":"CIN1572242922A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1572242922.jpg?v=1750762220"},{"product_id":"children-of-the-aging-self-absorbed-book-nina-w-brown-9781626252042","title":"Children of the Aging Self-Absorbed","description":"As your self-absorbed parent grows older and becomes more dependent on you, hurtful relationships may resurface and become further strained. Does your mother's desire to complain about how thoughtless your father was last night override your need to get to work on time? Do you really have nothing better to do on Saturday night than to ferry your little brother home from the movies, or help your sister debug her relationship with her boyfriend? If you tend to drop everything in your own life whenever a family member needs you, then you join the ranks of the millions others who are over-involved with their families. Over-involved family members get so swallowed by their loved ones' problems that they often lose sight of who they are and what they really want. This kind of excessive empathy becomes a problem when the needs of others determine every move you make and inhibit your ability to take care of yourself and get on with your own life. In Whose Life Is It Anyway? psychologist and author Nina Brown starts by helping readers evaluate their own family ties and decide if they are too caught up in other's needs. She goes on to provide a variety of techniques to help readers shield themselves from the needs of others, build strong boundaries, strengthen parts of their personalities against a tendency toward excessive empathy, and stay free of dominating or manipulative relationships.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49852564930833,"sku":"CIN1572242892G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50383205269777,"sku":"CIN1572242892A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51417391628561,"sku":"CIN1572242892VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1572242892.jpg?v=1751213165"},{"product_id":"psychoeducational-groups-book-nina-w-brown-9781138049390","title":"Psychoeducational Groups","description":"With this 4th edition, Psychoeducational Groups remains the only comprehensive, user-friendly guide to planning, implementing, facilitating, and evaluating psychoeducational groups. You must accept that your usual coping strategies are not effective, and will not be effective, with this person, she advises. You cannot expect them to react and behave as adults. So what's a victim to do? Start with the suggestions in this book. In Coping with Infuriating, Mean, Critical People, Brown explains why many people, who may not display all of the characteristics necessary for a formal, full-blown narcissist diagnosis, still display what she calls a destructive narcissistic pattern that results in much the same anguish for those with whom the individual interacts. Thankfully, she also provides specific methods that will help victims of this behavior deal with the narcissistic colleague, supervisor or boss, parent, or intimate other. Only the extremely lucky among us have never faced or felt the effects of narcissistic behaviors and attitudes, displayed by colleagues, bosses, friends, parents, or lovers. These individuals may boast and brag constantly, take credit for other people's work, expect favors but return few or none, never listen (but always know all the answers), be sure of what is right and best regardless of the topic. They devalue others, micromanage, are hypercritical and mistrustful. Other characteristics of this harmful personality include an inflated sense of importance, although achievements are exaggerated and actual outcomes don't support feelings of superiority. However, none of us talked to each other about it and I continued to engage in much self-examination, looking for my unresolved issues that could be making me react so strongly to this person. Nothing I could think of seemed to fit, so I continued to try to dissolve my resistance and defenses, all to no avail. A meeting with colleagues started me on a more fruitful path. The meeting was on a professional concern, but I happened to make a comment that I went home and took two headache pills after a recent conversation with the distressing colleague. I was surprised to hear from every person at the meeting (about ten people) that they, too, had headaches or stomachaches every time they interacted with the person. Although we didn't spend much time recounting our reactions and experiences, I realized that part of the problem was the other person. That realization sent me to the literature, and what emerged was the description for the destructive narcissistic pattern. Everything fit, including the personal reactions I'd had with the colleague. Researching causes and development of the destructive narcissistic pattern (DNP) led me to reflect about the effects on a child when either one or both parents had the pattern. As I continued to explore the research, I began to better understand some of my personal experiences and those that many of my students and clients had reported. Many of their adult reactions, behaviors, and attitudes could be a result of having one or more parents who had a destructive narcissistic pattern. Out of these realizations and experiences emerged this book. But understanding was not enough. If what I'd learned was to truly be helpful, I needed to find a way not only to explain the destructive narcissistic pattern in ways that would be easy to understand, but to provide some personal growth strategies as well. What I wanted to do was to give people some resources for providing themselves with the parenting they needed but did not receive. This was my challenge and what follows is my attempt to provide some understanding and guidance.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51001767788817,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51001771000081,"sku":"NIN9780369323163","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52433076715793,"sku":"NLS9780369323163","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0369323165.jpg?v=1751071092"},{"product_id":"creative-activities-for-group-therapy-book-nina-w-brown-9781032171463","title":"Creative Activities for Group Therapy","description":"Leading a group is a delicate balancing act of managing dynamic group and individual factors. Normal anxiety is a coping mechanism and can be helpful at times, but when it becomes excessive it is troubling to the person who experiences it and to those who interact with them on a regular basis. In this book, author Nina W. Brown explains that the anxiety at issue here is not pathological but nevertheless can be dysfunctional to that person and others. A professor and eminent scholar, Brown focuses on four categories of everyday anxious people and explains some effective approaches we can take when interacting with these worriers, complainers, micromanagers, and naggers. She also helps readers to understand how their own personalities can contribute to the reactions of a highly anxious person, how readers can build their psychological boundaries to keep themselves from being pulled into the anxious state, and how they can model more effective ways to behave and relate. The book is intended for readers who have an anxious person in their lives. In addition, students and scholars in psychology, counseling, and social work will find this text valuable as a training resource.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51503694184721,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51503694709009,"sku":"CIN1440867658G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52402503713041,"sku":"NLS9781440867651","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1440867658.jpg?v=1752143922"},{"product_id":"group-counseling-for-elementary-and-middle-school-children-book-nina-w-brown-9780275946517","title":"Group Counseling for Elementary and Middle School Children","description":"Focusing on theory and therapeutic factors and applications, this work will provide group leaders and counselors working with children with a conceptual basis and specific strategies for use in therapy, counseling, and therapeutic groups. After reviewing the state of sexual harassment in American high schools, the authors provide the best practices for increasing awareness of what behaviors constitute sexual harassment as well as alert readers to the negative impact on both boys and girls, where sexual harassment is most likely to take place, and ways students can become more socially adept. Nonetheless, these characteristics negatively impact relationships. The destructive narcisist's typical interaction produces negative reactions in others. For example, the individual devalues others, lacks empathy, has a sense of entitlement, and is emotionally shallow. He may function very well and be successful economically, but is unable to form and maintain stable relationships, as evidenced by numerous partners or marriages. The DNP, Brown asserts, is often unrecognized. Although others may find him frustrating and difficult, the individual with DNP can be charming when charm is perceived to be to his benefit. In addition to identifying destructive narcissism, Brown provides strategies to help the reader moderate or eliminate the impact of these destructive narcissistic behaviors, feelings, and attitudes. Attention is given to understanding projection, projective identification, and identification as well as how those processes trigger reactions. This book will be an important tool for counselors, psychologists, clinical social workers, and other mental health professionals, and students in these fields.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52589116195089,"sku":"NLS9780275960179","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":52600357421329,"sku":"CIN027596017XA","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780275960179.jpg?v=1761059413"},{"product_id":"uptight-and-in-your-face-book-nina-w-brown-9780313385551","title":"Uptight and In Your Face","description":"Dealing with uptight, high-stress people in your workplace, family, or home can be an enormous challenge, but this book provides invaluable insight and practical advice enabling readers to handle these \"problem\" personality types successfully. In Uptight and In Your Face: Coping with an Anxious Boss, Parent, Spouse, or Lover the author presents an invaluable tutorial to successfully interact with the most frustrating and taxing people in your life.
