Phosie Mae Eaton leaves her home in Galveston, Texas, to visit her son, Will, a wounded U.S. Marine fresh from combat on Iwo Jima, now in a Los Angeles military hospital. Even as a Southern black woman familiar with the evils of segregated society, Eaton is stunned to discover that racial rules and regulations extend to war heroes. She finds that they are kept in a separate house from the white soldiers, banned from receiving whites' blood transfusions and aren't allowed basic amenities, such as coffee, from the Red Cross. She finds Will balancing precariously between life and death, as the gunshot wound in his stomach has festered and become infected. Doctors usually treat such infections with an easy injection of penicillin, but the hospital has no 'colored' needles due to their treatment of venereal-disease cases (which have skyrocketed due to postwar celebrations). Eaton strives to help her son in any way possible and, in order to stay in California, takes a job as a maid for a wealthy and eccentric Jewish family.Like novels include.Show Falling on Cedars - David GutersonThe Blind Assassin - Margaret Atwood Striver's Row - Kevin BakerThe Help - Kathryn Stockett The Postmistress - Sarah BlakeStage Door Canteen - Maggie DavisChildren of Secrets - Lander DuncanA War of Her Own - Sylvia Dickey SmithThat Year of our War - Gloria Goldreich The Listener - Shira Nayman Sophie's Choice - William Styron","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49513132065041,"sku":"CIN0615827217G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49599825150225,"sku":"GOR013133665","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0615827217.jpg?v=1751294781"},{"product_id":"karma-kaper-book-noel-anenberg-9781667863887","title":"The Karma Kaper","description":"\"The Karma Kaper\" stars Walter and Barry Shore, twin brothers and business partners. An Armenian crime family invests $10 million into a Barry Shore Productions film. When the film never materializes, the Armenians call the loan. When Barry doesn't pay, the Armenians' juice men pick up an unsuspecting Walter, drive him to a Glendale sausage factory, and feed him alive into the meat grinder. Walter goes to Heaven and returns to Barry reincarnated as a chihuahua. Frederick Delano Rubenstein (FDR) is a hapless counterman at his father's Melrose Avenue delicatessen, across from Shore Productions. FDR's secret passion is to become a Hollywood screenwriter. When his father, the King of Corned Beef dies, FDR sells the deli, moves to Malibu, and agrees to write a script he once pitched to Barry Shore. There's a twist! All chaos breaks loose as Barry, Walter the chihuahua, and FDR try to stay one step ahead of Hasidic money launderers and the Armenian mob. This farcical novel of love, life, and larceny is definitely a 9.5 on the Rotten Corned Beef Scale.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52753592287505,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52753592647953,"sku":"NIN9781667863887","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781667863887.jpg?v=1782297055"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-noel-anenberg.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
