The book explores a wide range of issues that are central to child welfare practices. The first section puts the practice debate within a wider context of social policy. The second section considers the complex and sensitive work required in caring or arranging care for children in need and the influences, forces and fashions that have pulled child care in various directions. Underlying the contributions to this book is the profound conviction of the importance of these issues, and the belief in our capacity to improve care provision for vulnerable children. Child Welfare in the UK is a valuable resource for all those studying and working in the field of child welfare. For students of social policy and social work, it provides a comprehensive review of critical aspects of provision for children in need. For those who work alongside social workers--such as doctors, health visitors, psychologists, and teachers--it offers an insight into the professional, organisational and political factors influencing policy and practice.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49567215911185,"sku":"GOR004083288","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49584760455441,"sku":"GOR012801552","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53266525585681,"sku":"GOR007198151","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0632049936.jpg?v=1751454825"},{"product_id":"neglected-children-book-olive-stevenson-9780632041466","title":"Neglected Children","description":"With the increasing incidence of child abuse, emphasis is now being placed on strategies to enable prevention. Neglect is the most problematic form of abuse, because of the threshold of acceptability, issues related to culture, and effects of poverty. By its very nature, it is an ongoing problem and an area which is not clearly defined. It is clear that the extent of risk to children in relation to neglect needs to be evaluated and reviewed, to enable the appropriate response to be made within the available legislation. Definitions, assessment and interventions need to be viewed separately to enable neglect to be addressed and prevent further abuse. This volume supports the view that social workers need to be more proactive in their work in cases of neglect. It offers guidance and support to professionals who have to manage these situations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49602747531537,"sku":"GOR002345547","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53245598335249,"sku":"GOR003166011","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0632041463.jpg?v=1751327586"},{"product_id":"someone-else-s-child-book-olive-stevenson-9780710087065","title":"Someone Else's Child","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49641249308945,"sku":"GOR002376112","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52939714134289,"sku":"GOR002523575","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0710087063.jpg?v=1751294719"},{"product_id":"claimant-or-client-book-olive-stevenson-9780043600276","title":"Claimant or Client?","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49659331936529,"sku":"GOR005210364","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0043600271.jpg?v=1751004168"},{"product_id":"someone-else-s-child-rare-book-olive-stevenson-1704787212ada","title":"Someone Else's Child","description":"1965. Notions of ‘entitlement’ and ‘rights’ in means-tested benefit schemes are examined in relation to those claimants, including unsupported mothers and the so-called ‘voluntary unemployed’, who present particular difficulties to those administering the scheme. For many who claim supplementary benefit their only need is prompt, efficient financial service. For a few, their financial need is inextricably bound up with complex social and psychological difficulties. For such cases, the civil servants who administer the British Supplementary Benefits scheme need skill beyond that normally expected of such persons and their relationship with the social workers who are, or should be, in touch with such claimants becomes crucial.  The book considers some of the underlying ethical issues, in particular the tension between equitable and individualised justice, involved in the exercise of discretion. It describes the structure and organisation of the Supplementary Benefits scheme and analyses the roles of officials that bear on welfare. It also examines the current situation with regard to the selection and training of officials and discusses the attitudes of social workers to officials.  This work, drawing on the unique experience of the author as the first Social Work Adviser to the Supplementary Benefits Commission, was the first study of its kind to be published in this country and would be of great value to all students and teachers of social work at the time as well as to a wide readership of social scientists.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52451061891345,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52451062448401,"sku":"NLS9781032058016","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781032058016.jpg?v=1759360557"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-olive-stevenson.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
