Per molti l'870  Nucleo Speciale Guastatori Genio   solamente un nome, o poco pi , all'interno degli annali della Storia Militare italiana. Lo era anche per me fino ad un anno fa. Ma poi avvengono incontri (anche se solo telefonici) con persone che ti portano un nuovo punto di vista. Vengo infatti contattato da Giandomenico De Sanctis, figlio dell'eroico Giorgio, che desidera parlarmi, appunto, del reparto comandato da suo padre, reparto poco o nulla citato, nemmeno in un libro scritto a quattro mani da me e da Luigi Manes nel 2018 sul Primo Raggruppamento Motorizzato, Corpo Italiano di Liberazione e Gruppi di Combattimento cobelligeranti. Giandomenico De Sanctis mi racconta, mi parla di suo padre, ogni volta aggiunge informazioni, stimolando la mia (grande) fame e curiosit  storica, condividendo con me i numerosi documenti raccolti dal padre: relazioni scritte di suo pugno, relazioni di ufficiali italiani, proposte di decorazione, lettere di stima ed elogi italiani ed americani, motivazioni di decorazioni, fotografie. E nasce cos  l'idea di questo libro, un volume che vuole raccogliere tutte queste testimonianze, che vuole raccontare la storia di un piccolo manipolo di arditi giovani, che combatterono con eroismo e fecero con senso del dovere la loro parte nel tremendo meccanismo che fu la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Sono questi incontri che danno, pi  di altre cose, un senso al lavoro di ricerca storica, il poter abbinare nomi, foto e documenti, ma soprattutto poter parlare con persone direttamente (anche solo marginalmente) coinvolte nella grande danza della Storia, dopo ancora cos  tanti anni. Al termine di questo lungo periodo di studio, che ha portato alla stesura di questo volume, desidero ringraziare in primo luogo Giandomenico De Sanctis, figlio di Giorgio: senza di lui non sarebbe stato possibile raccontare questo cameo di eroismo e di storia militare italiana.
