Hugo’s text is a classic of Latin Baroque historical writing that comprehensively recounts a nine-month military campaign in the Low Countries (1624-25) which was a showcase of early 17th-century siege warfare and attracted the attention and involvement of almost every country in Europe. His translator was an Englishman who served in the siege as a company captain. Arblaster shines a light on Hugo’s first-hand account of the siege, with its considerations of every aspect of the military operations and their human consequences. Hugo took part in the campaign himself as chaplain to the general who conducted the siege, Ambrogio Spinola, and so had privileged access to the decision-making process, as well as close familiarity with the various events and incidents that he recounts. Hugo also devotes attention to the moral and material state of the soldiery and of the besieged; describes individual actions, lapses, feats of heroism, duels, ambushes and stratagems; and considers the wider propaganda war that surrounded the siege. As a result, his book offers a contemporary commentary on the role of honour, reputation and image in 17th-century warfare, as well as vital insights into the perspective of one of the first and foremost celebrity generals of the time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53181004218641,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53181004349713,"sku":"NGR9781350553866","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781350553866.jpg?v=1778147187"},{"product_id":"disputation-by-decree-book-paul-arblaster-9789004186613","title":"Disputation by Decree","description":"Prevailing scholarly analysis of the public disputations between D.V. Coornhert (1522-1590) and Dutch Reformed ministers is firmly rooted in a principled view of early modern tolerance. This study proposes a new point of departure, which involves breaking away from a Coornhert-centred reading of the debates in Leiden and the Hague, while focusing on the formal status of these disputations instead. Government support of the Reformed Church proved the backbone of these illuminating 'disputations by decree'. The public legitimization of the Reformed Church - a goal with both political and theological significance - was at stake. As a micro-history of two very unique occasions in Dutch history, this study sheds new light on the complex development of political and religious argument in the early phase of the Dutch Revolt.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53500769173777,"sku":"NLS9789004186613","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004186613.jpg?v=1778320588"},{"product_id":"from-ghent-to-aix-book-paul-arblaster-9789004276475","title":"From Ghent to Aix","description":"Sixteenth-century Brussels and Antwerp in combination formed the northern linchpin of an international communication network that covered Western and Central Europe. In the seventeenth century both cities saw the rise of newspapers that compare revealingly with those produced in Germany, the Dutch Republic, England and France. In From Ghent to Aix, Paul Arblaster examines the services that carried the news, the types of news publicized, and the relationship of these newspapers to Baroque Europe's other methods of public communication, from drums and trumpets, ceremonies and sermons, to almanacs, pamphlets, pasquinades and newsletters. The merchant's need for information and the government's desire to influence opinion together opened up a space in which a new social force would take root: the media.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53511386530065,"sku":"NLS9789004276475","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004276475.jpg?v=1778196099"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-paul-arblaster.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
