Few people realise, however, that in addition to these famous buildings there are many others that share, or once shared, some of that greatness. These ‘other cathedrals’ have very varied origins. There were cathedrals established in Anglo-Saxon times that subsequently lost that status. Further cathedrals founded after the Norman Conquest also later ceased. Henry VIII had plans to elevate many great monastic churches to cathedral status, but most were unfulfilled. From the nineteenth century onwards, many new cathedrals have been created, both by the Church of England and by other Churches. Altogether eight groups are discussed, containing in total well over a hundred buildings. Most are fine, and many are or were in their size and magnificence fully comparable with the great cathedrals themselves. Some today stand complete and glorious. Others are now mutilated or in ruin. Some have been completely destroyed, but even these may stir us by their lost glories. Paul Jeffery explores the often fascinating episodes of history that lie behind these groups of magnificent and frequently forgotten buildings. The spotlight is then turned on each one, revealing many architectural and historical treasures.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49523782189329,"sku":"GOR004742531","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51844768596241,"sku":"GOR008720810","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752453475.jpg?v=1751443092"},{"product_id":"collegiate-churches-of-england-and-wales-book-paul-jeffery-9780709083689","title":"The Collegiate Churches of England and Wales","description":"Collegiate churches are one of the country's lesser-known glories. A collegiate church was the church of a medieval college, which was an important class of religious house, different from but comparable to a monastery. For most of their history, these colleges had nothing to do with education, but it is from them that the secular educational colleges of today are descended. Usually the most important, and often the only, part to survive from a college is the church. Collegiate churches were often large and magnificent, and almost 150 remain to the present day, forming a superb body of architecture. The book is illustrated with 300 photographs and contains two main sections. In the first, the author traces the development of the colleges from their beginnings in the Anglo-Saxon era to their dramatic decline in the sixteenth century, and deals with their nature, historical evolution, demise and legacy. The second section comprises an extensive gazetteer, divided into counties, designed as a convenient guide for the lover of old buildings to explore this part of our architectural wealth. \"The Collegiate Churches of England and Wales\" is a remarkable work which should be on the bookshelf of all those interested in the country's history and heritage.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49531496333585,"sku":"GOR006813363","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50475446927633,"sku":"GOR007268286","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0709083688.jpg?v=1750977790"},{"product_id":"a-player-s-guide-to-chamber-music-book-paul-jeffery-9780719814969","title":"A A Player's Guide to Chamber Music","description":"Chamber music includes some of the world's greatest music. It is widely played in homes, without an audience, by players who are mostly amateurs, and much of the repertoire is playable even by those of quite moderate ability. Player's Guide to Chamber Music gives advice on what music is available and helps the player to identify what is suitable. It covers chamber music from the seventeenth to the later twentieth century and all instrumental combinations including strings, piano, wind instruments, duet sonatas and baroque ensembles. All the significant composers and musical aspects of playing are covered along with works suitable for inexperienced players.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49541658312977,"sku":"GOR008934514","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49729601143057,"sku":"NGR9780719814969","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0719814960.jpg?v=1751447217"},{"product_id":"parish-church-of-st-mary-at-hill-in-the-city-of-london-book-paul-jeffery-9780946823116","title":"Parish Church of St. Mary-at-Hill in the City of London","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49666013266193,"sku":"GOR002825776","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50141810295057,"sku":"GOR013869361","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0946823111.jpg?v=1751109096"},{"product_id":"collegiate-churches-of-england-and-wales-book-paul-jeffery-9780709074120","title":"The Collegiate Churches of England and Wales","description":"This is a unique and comprehensive guide to these previously little known and often misunderstood medieval institutions. Sir Christopher Wren, working with Commissioners appointed by Parliament, was responsible for rebuilding the cathedral and 51 of the parish churches, although the immediate need to start rebuilding made his design for an overall replanning of the City impossible. The work was funded by a tax on coals brought into the City of London. Much has been written about Wren's rebuilding of St Paul's, far less about the other City churches, the principal subject of this book: this is indeed the first modern book to examine them as a whole. Paul Jeffery describes how and when the churches were built, exploring the respective contributions of Wren and of his two principal assistants, Robert Hooke and Nicholas Hawksmoor. Working from the surviving drawings and records and from the evidence of the churches, he explains the principal features common to the churches and their individual features. The result of the work was a unique set of contemporary churches. While all are not of the standard of Wren's masterpieces, such as St Stephen Walbrook and St Bride's, none is without architectural merit and interest. The second part of the book is a gazetteer of all the churches, including those that no longer exist. The book is heavily illustrated and provides a visual record of all the churches. Since they were built the Wren churches have suffered steady losses. St Christopher-le-Stocks was demolished in 1782 to make way for the Bank of England. Others, such as St Dionis Backchurch and St Antholin Budge Row, were lost to Victorian parish rationalization. Many were destroyed or badly damaged in the Second World War. Only 23 of the original 51 remain. These are now under threat again, with the Templeman Report's proposal that only four of the existing churches (none by Wren) should be retained as parish churches. They provide a test case of conservation, sitting as they do in the middle of the City of London. \"The City Churches of Sir Christopher Wren\" presents a clear case both for their importance and for their preservation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50129225646353,"sku":"GOR006399548","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50236651864337,"sku":"GOR013895449","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51070659756305,"sku":"GOR003561312","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1852851422.jpg?v=1750835114"},{"product_id":"city-churches-of-sir-christopher-wren-book-paul-jeffery-9781847250148","title":"City Churches of Sir Christopher Wren","description":"The Great Fire of 1666 devastated the centre of London, with a loss of old St Paul's and eighty-six parish churches.
