In The Lees of Virginia, Paul Nagel chronicles seven generations of Lees, covering over two hundred years of accolades and scandals. We meet Thomas Lee, who dreamed of America as a continental empire, and his son, Arthur Lee, who created a political storm with his accusations against Benjamin Franklin. Arthur's cousin was Light-Horse Harry Lee, a controversial cavalry officer in the Revolutionary War, whose wild real estate speculation led to imprisonment for debt and finally self-exile in the Caribbean. One of Harry's sons, Henry Lee, further disgraced the family by seducing his sister-in-law and frittering away Stratford, the Lees' ancestral home. It was a third son, Robert E. Lee, who would become the family's redeeming figure, a brilliant tactician still revered for his lofty character and military success. In these and numerous other portraits, Nagel discloses how, from 1640 to 1870, a family spirit united the Lees, making them a force in Virginian and American affairs. This Bicentennial Edition, celebrating the birth of Robert E. Lee in 1807, features a new Preface by the author in which he discusses the ways in which family biographies can contribute to the ongoing debate about what constitutes \"family values.\"    Paul Nagel is a leading chronicler of families prominent in our history. His Descent from Glory, a masterful narrative account of four generations of Adamses, was hailed by Chicago Sun-Times as \"a magnificent embarrassment of biographical riches.\" Now, in The Lees of Virginia, Nagel brings his skills to bear on another major American family, taking readers inside the great estates of the Old Dominion and the turbulent lives of the Lee men and women.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50181763465489,"sku":"CIN0195305604A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50807200416017,"sku":"GOR014079298","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50999809310993,"sku":"NIN9780195305609","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51330443706641,"sku":"CIN0195305604VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51422750703889,"sku":"CIN0195305604G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52408151277841,"sku":"NLS9780195305609","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0195305604.jpg?v=1751227467"},{"product_id":"missouri-book-paul-c-nagel-9780393056334","title":"Missouri","description":"In the era of overland traders and steamboat pilots, of Thomas Hart Benton and Mark Twain, life in Missouri was strongly flavored by the Jeffersonian spirit, expressed in a suspicion of large cities, a belief that mankind flourished best in a rural setting, and a faith in the free individual as the guardian of liberty.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50268157477137,"sku":"CIN0393056333G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0393056333.jpg?v=1751102779"},{"product_id":"george-caleb-bingham-volume-1-book-paul-c-nagel-9780826215741","title":"George Caleb Bingham Volume 1","description":"In this fascinating work, Paul Nagel tells the full story of George Caleb Bingham (1811-1879), one of America's greatest nineteenth-century painters. While Nagel assesses Bingham's artistic achievements, he also portrays another and very important part of the artist's career - his service as a statesman and political leader in Missouri. Until now, Bingham's public service has been largely forgotten, overshadowed by his triumph as a great artist. Yet Nagel finds there were times when Bingham yearned more to be a successful politician than to be a distinguished painter. Born in Virginia, Bingham moved with his family to Missouri when he was eight years old. He spent his youth in Arrow Rock, Missouri, and returned there as an adult. He also kept art studios in Columbia and St. Louis. In his last years, he served as the first professor of art at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Because of his ties to the state, he was known nationally as the \"\"Missouri artist.\"\" Bingham's most distinguished public service to Missouri took place when violence erupted over the question of whether slaves should be allowed in Kansas. During the Civil War, he grew more politically involved and remained so throughout the bitter period of Reconstruction. From 1875 to 1877, Bingham served as Missouri's adjutant general, with most of that time spent in Washington, D. C., where he attempted to settle Missourians' war claims against the federal government. Contrary to the idyllic scenes portrayed in most of his paintings, Bingham's life ranged from moments of high achievement to times of intense distress and humiliation. His career was often touched by controversy, sorrow, and frustration. Personal letters and other manuscripts reveal Bingham's life to be quite complicated, and Nagel attempts to uncover the truth in this biography. Beautifully illustrated, this book includes a magnificent landscape entitled Horse Thief, which had been missing since Bingham painted it sometime around 1852. Recently discovered by art historian Fred R. Kline, this splendid work will appear in print for the first time. Anyone who has an interest in art, Missouri history, or politics will find this new book extremely valuable.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50271023956241,"sku":"CIN0826215742G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53641499541777,"sku":"CIN0826215742VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0826215742.jpg?v=1751330780"},{"product_id":"manchester-united-match2match-book-paul-nagel-9781909064225","title":"Manchester United Match2Match","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50412798607633,"sku":"GOR011106823","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/190906422X.jpg?v=1750769352"},{"product_id":"manchester-united-match2match-book-paul-nagel-9781909064164","title":"Manchester United Match2Match","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50772459815185,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50772459880721,"sku":"GOR012799764","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53651126354193,"sku":"GOR014993333","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1909064165.jpg?v=1751282221"},{"product_id":"manchester-united-match2match-book-paul-nagel-9781909064324","title":"Manchester United Match2Match","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51605713158417,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51605713223953,"sku":"NGR9781909064324","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1909064327.jpg?v=1751250395"},{"product_id":"manchester-united-match2match-book-paul-nagel-9781909064362","title":"Manchester United Match2Match","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51605713486097,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51605713617169,"sku":"NGR9781909064362","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/190906436X.jpg?v=1750996434"},{"product_id":"manchester-united-match2match-book-paul-nagel-9781909064379","title":"Manchester United Match2Match","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51605713748241,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51605713879313,"sku":"NGR9781909064379","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1909064378.jpg?v=1751155480"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-paul-nagel.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
