On 30 March 1979 for the first time in more than 100 years an MP was killed by a car bomb in the precincts of the House of Commons. Airey Neave was a loyal Tory backbencher who had last held ministerial office in 1959. What, then, had he done to deserve such a vicious and bloody attack?             Public Servant, Secret Agent tells the thrilling tale of Neave's escape from Colditz, his involvement with the secret services and his shadowy role at the right of the Conservative party. The darling of the hard Left, vilified by the right, adored by his unions, he has had a long career of controversy and has stirred passions throughout the land. Paul Routledge follows Scargill's career, from his early involvement with the Communist Party and his mysterious defection from their ranks, through to his gaining the only job he ever wanted - lifelong President of the National Union of Mineworkers. Conflict has been Scargill's raison d'etre. He is naturally antagonistic, possessing an almost unstoppable will for power, and his dialectical training found him a willing pupil. Out of confrontation would come revolution and victory for the working classes. Yet it was arguably the failure of the NUM's confrontation with the government of Margaret Thatcher during the 1984-85 coalminers' strike that marked the breaking of the working-class will to fight through strike action, and ushered in a new era of industrial peace. And behind that failure was, argues Routledge, Scargill's misplaced sense of destiny and his arrogance in dealing with fellow leaders. The book goes into the scandal of the Gadaffi-Russian money affair, the Lightman inquiry and Scargill's admission of \"teeming and ladling\" with NUM funds amounting to millions, of which his own executive was ignorant. It goes into Scargill's relations with politicians and his fellow miners' leaders, such as the redoubtable Mick McGahey. And it examines the nature of Scargill's rehabilitation as the era of British heavy industrial might is finally consigned to the dustbin of history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49527263559953,"sku":"GOR001191775","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50493601743121,"sku":"GOR001523438","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51722487955729,"sku":"GOR008020795","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0002552604.jpg?v=1751194063"},{"product_id":"scargill-book-paul-routledge-9780006380771","title":"Scargill","description":"Follows Scargill's career, from his early involvement with the Communist Party and his mysterious defection, through to his gaining the only job he ever wanted - lifelong President of the National Union of Mineworkers. Neave's sensational escape and his equally sensational death are the extent of most people's knowledge and appreciation of one of Britain's most mysterious public figures. The two events, separated by 35 years, are crucially linked: Neave joined a division of MI6 following his wartime bravery to advise other would-be escapees. He was also active in establishing the Gladio network with SOE. Soon after the war, and after working as a prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials, he successfully entered Parliament as Conservative MP for Abingdon, where he sat until his death. Overlooked by Macmillan and Heath for high office, ostensibly on health grounds, Neave pursued a public life of a very unusual kind: he became conspicuously inconspicuous, operating almost entirely outside the public gaze. During the early 1970s Neave was in contact with anti-Wilson plotters and by 1974 he was calling for Edward Heath's resignation too, seeing weakness in the Tory leader's capitulation to the miners. Thatcher was his crusading angel and he ran a brilliant leadership campaign, fooling more experienced candidates into complacency and securing Thatcher's triumph. She offered him any job in her Cabinet in return. Inexplicably to most he chose Northern Ireland and had prepared the most confrontational and explicitly belligerent strategy ever seen there. A matter of weeks before Thatcher's General Election victory began 18 years of Conservative government, Neave's extraordinary life of intrigue and scheming was ended by a plot he had not foreseen.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49554425250065,"sku":"GOR001280162","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49960242512145,"sku":"GOR003229065","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50045147316497,"sku":"GOR001560060","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50291584860433,"sku":"CIN1841152447A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50392578785553,"sku":"CIN1841152447G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1841152447.jpg?v=1751027128"},{"product_id":"bumper-book-of-british-lefties-book-paul-routledge-9781842750643","title":"Bumper Book of British Lefties","description":"Routledge has composed witty pen portraits of all the forces of lefteousness, from Arthur Scargill to Tom Driberg.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49557261549841,"sku":"GOR001455885","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51699595870481,"sku":"GOR002052034","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/184275064X.jpg?v=1750724667"},{"product_id":"madam-speaker-book-paul-routledge-9781902301938","title":"Madam Speaker","description":"Betty Boothroyd was the first woman to be elected Speaker of the House of Commons. He shows how the Baloapal movement--resisting a missile base--and the Chipko movement--resisting a program of deforestation--offer rich lessons in development strategies, nonviolent sanctions, and grassroots social change. The sanctions chosen by the movements are shown to be of particular importance and to have emerged from the participants' profound sense of place. Core beliefs, traditional values, and common goals are summoned to inspire beleaguered communities and are employed to resist outside domination and despoliation. Terrains of Resistance, accordingly, marks sites of conflict in specific times and places at the essential levels of belief and culture. They juxtapose the state's coercive power in support of development against the ingenuity and tenacity of grassroots movements. A highly informed, well written work showing the potential for nonviolent sanctions throughout the developing world, and the possible implications of continued grassroots mobilizations. This book will be of particular interest to students of social movements and Indian politics and to political scientists, sociologists, geographers, and anthropologists.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52478198153489,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52478199234833,"sku":"NLS9780275945176","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780275945176.jpg?v=1759846806"},{"product_id":"global-justice-networks-book-paul-routledge-9780719076855","title":"Global Justice Networks","description":"This book provides a critical investigation of what has been termed the 'global justice movement'. Through a detailed study of a grassroots peasants' network in Asia (People's Global Action), an international trade union network (the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mining and General Workers) and the Social Forum process, it analyses some of the global justice movement's component parts, operational networks and their respective dynamics, strategies and practices. The authors argue that the emergence of new globally-connected forms of collective action against neoliberal globalisation are indicative of a range of place-specific forms of political agency that coalesce across geographic space at particular times, in specific places, and in a variety of ways. Rather than being indicative of a coherent 'movement', the authors argue that such forms of political agency contain many political and geographical fissures and fault-lines, and are best conceived of as 'global justice networks' overlapping, interacting, competing, and differentially-placed and resourced networks that articulate demands for social, economic and environmental justice. Such networks, and the social movements that comprise them, characterise emergent forms of trans-national political agency. The authors argue that the role of key geographical concepts of space, place and scale are crucial to an understanding of the operational dynamics of such networks. Such an analysis challenges key current assumptions in the literature about the emergence of a global civil society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52480274727185,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52480275677457,"sku":"NLS9780719076855","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780719076855.jpg?v=1759849976"},{"product_id":"global-justice-networks-book-paul-routledge-9781784993832","title":"Global Justice Networks","description":"This book provides a critical investigation of what has been termed the 'global justice movement'. It is remarkable how many survive, often a tribute to the immense amount of hard work with picks and shovels, just like the original navvies, of volunteers who restored abandoned waterways.\"  For the Love of Canals begins in Paul's previous home in Dudswell Wharf, where he lived hard by \"the Cut\", as canal folk know the waterway, just north of the historic Hertfordshire town of Berkhamsted.  Paul's first encounter with canals goes all the way back to his childhood, in the coal mining country of west Yorkshire. Just over the hill from his home town of Normanton lay the Aire and Calder Navigation Canal, a prince among waterways, that served the collieries of half the country.  From these early beginnings, he graduated to cycling the entire lengths of several canals in southern England, on his folding Brompton, and in later years walking many more across the country.  For the Love of Canals brings readers on a journey round Britain's canals, their history, their rise, decline and rebirth, their role in trade, their romance, their dark narrative of crime, their future in the gentrification of homes by \"the Cut\" that were once deeply unfashionable but now highly sought-after, their sport and wildlife and most of all their sheer fun and pleasure, on the towpath, on board and in art, film and books.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53364187857169,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53364188381457,"sku":"NGR9781917439992","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781917439992.jpg?v=1775044185"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-paul-routledge.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
