Indeed, some of the greatest dramas of World War II were played out in the skies, from the heart-stopping maneuvers of warbird pilots engaged in aerial combat against closely matched enemy aircraft to the daring bombing missions that saw pilots face the toughest aerial defenses ever designed. Costs in men and machinery were high, but all involved were united by a sense of camaraderie and in the end, these steel-nerved crews changed the course of the war.Aviation Art of World War II presents more than two hundred dramatic paintings that capture these aerial encounters in vivid detail, featuring contributions from today's most noted aviation artists, including Robert Bailey, Stan Stokes, Robert Taylor, Jim Dietz, Keith Ferris, and Roy Grinnell. Each scene has been painstakingly researched to create the most historically accurate depiction possible, giving readers an eyewitness snapshot of the action. Extensive captions describe the scene taking place and offer details on the planes, pilots, and crews, while archival photographs of the individuals involved breathe life into each meticulously rendered painting. This stunning collection is a must-have forfans of military history and aviation aficionados alike.
The tragic sight of the US Arizona burning after the attack on Pearl Harbor is etched in the collective memory of the United States citizens that lived through that infamous day. Lee Jr., who served a key role during World War II in the Pacific. Recognizing the achievements and legacy of one of the war's top combat admirals has been long overdue until now. Battleship Commander explores Lee's life from boyhood in Kentucky through his eventual service as commander of the fast battleships from 1942 to 1945. Paul Stillwell draws on more than 150 first-person accounts from those who knew and served with Lee from boyhood until the time of his death. Said to be down to earth, modest, forgiving, friendly, and with a wry sense of humor, Lee eschewed the media and, to the extent possible, left administrative details to others. Stillwell relates the sequential building of a successful career, illustrating Admiral Lee's focus on operational, tactical, and strategic concerns. During his service in the Navy Department from 1939 to 1942, Lee prepared the U.S. Navy for war at sea, and was involved in inspecting designs for battleships, cruisers, aircraft carriers, and destroyers. He sent observers to Britain to report on Royal Navy operations during the war against Germany and made plans to send an action team to mainland China to observe conditions for possible later Allied landings there. Putting his focus on the need to equip U.S. warships with radar and antiaircraft guns, Lee was one of the few flag officers of his generation who understood the tactical advantage of radar, especially during night battles. In 1942 Willis Lee became commander of the first division of fast battleships to operate in the Pacific. During that service, he commanded Task Force 64, which achieved a tide-turning victory in a night battle near Guadalcanal in November 1942. Lee missed two major opportunities for surface actions against the Japanese. In June 1944, in the Marianas campaign, he declined to engage because his ships were not trained adequately to operate together in surface battles. In October 1944, Admiral William Halsey's bungled decisions denied Lee's ships an opportunity for combat. Continuing his career of service near the end of the war, Lee, in the summer of 1945, directed anti-kamikaze research efforts in Casco Bay, Maine. While Lee's wartime successes and failures make for compelling reading, what is here in this biography is a balanced look at the man and officer.
In January 1944 sixteen black enlisted men gathered at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois to begin a cram course that would turn them into the U.S. Navy's first African-American officers on active duty. The story of these boats – their technological evolution and tactical value – is also the story of the men who went to sea in them. A special breed of adventurers, they learned to adapt to boats that could dive deeper than their predecessors, go faster, shoot further, and stay underwater longer. Submarine Stories presents nearly five dozen first-person accounts from the men who were involved with gasoline- and diesel-powered submarines during the 20th and 21st centuries. Culled from never-before-published narratives and oral histories conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Naval Institute, the accounts illustrate the human aspects of serving in diesel boats: the training, operations in peacetime and war, liberty exploits, humorous sidelights, and the special feelings of bonding and camaraderie that grew among shipmates. He is the editor or author of nine previous books, including one on submarines, Sharks of Steel, which he coauthored with Vice Admiral Robert Y. Kaufman.
