Their mental capacity to grapple with population, to get its measure, was developing and this book describes how medieval people thought about population through both the texts which contained their thought and the medieval realities which shaped it. They found many topics, such as the history of population and variations between polygamy, monogamy and virginity, through theology. Crusade and travel literature supplied the themes of Muslim polygamy, military numbers, the colonization of the Holy Land,and the populations of Mongolia and China. Translations of Aristotle provided not only new themes but also a new vocabulary with which to think about population. In this innovative new study Peter Biller challenges the view that medieval thought was fundamentally abstract. He investigates medieval thought's capacity to deal with concrete contemporary realities, and sets academic discussions of population alongside the medieval facts of 'birth, and copulation, and death'.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49654152102161,"sku":"GOR013449031","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51089295769873,"sku":"NIN9780199265596","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52149221523729,"sku":"NLS9780199265596","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199265593.jpg?v=1751389645"},{"product_id":"inquisition-and-knowledge-1200-1700-book-peter-biller-9781914049255","title":"Inquisition and Knowledge, 1200-1700","description":"Essays considering how information could be used and abused in the service of heresy and inquisition.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50465510883601,"sku":"NGR9781914049255","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51058186944785,"sku":"NIN9781914049255","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52616200651025,"sku":"NLS9781914049255","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ LIKE_NEW \/ SBYB","offer_id":52888713658641,"sku":"CIN191404925XLN","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/191404925X.jpg?v=1751427588"},{"product_id":"handling-sin-book-peter-biller-9781903153482","title":"Handling Sin","description":"Penance and confession were an integral part of medieval religious life; essays explore literary evidence.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50477230063889,"sku":"NGR9781903153482","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51053324796177,"sku":"NIN9781903153482","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52333398917393,"sku":"NLS9781903153482","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1903153484.jpg?v=1750803770"},{"product_id":"inquisition-and-knowledge-1200-1700-book-peter-biller-9781914049033","title":"Inquisition and Knowledge, 1200-1700","description":"Essays considering how information could be used and abused in the service of heresy and inquisition.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50483315769617,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50483316293905,"sku":"CIN1914049039G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52407921869073,"sku":"NLS9781914049033","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52756433207569,"sku":"NIN9781914049033","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1914049039.jpg?v=1751413142"},{"product_id":"medieval-theology-and-the-natural-body-book-peter-biller-9780952973409","title":"Medieval Theology and the Natural Body","description":"New interdisciplinary essays on the treatment of the body in medieval theology. Such questions were posed in the polemic of the time - heretics were laici illiterati but were at the same time possessors of dangerous books which their opponents sought to destroy, and among them were preachers whose skills in dialectic and in exegesis threatened orthodoxy - and have challenged the investigators of heresy and literacy ever since. This collaborative volume, written by a group of established scholars from Britain, continental Europe and the United States, considers the importance of the written word among the main pre-Lutheran popular heresies in a wide range of European countries and explores the extent to which heretics' familiarity with books paralleled or exceeded that of their orthodox contemporaries.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50755042443537,"sku":"GOR003001135","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52345560924433,"sku":"NLS9780521575768","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0521575761.jpg?v=1751040104"},{"product_id":"religion-and-medicine-in-the-middle-ages-book-peter-biller-9781903153079","title":"Religion and Medicine in the Middle Ages","description":"Medicine and religion were intertwined in the middle ages; here are studies of specific instances.  The sheer extent of crossover - medics as religious men, religious men as medics, medical language at the service of preaching and moral-theological language deployed in medical writings - is the driving force behind these studies. The book reflects the extraordinary advances which 'pure' history of medicine has made in the last twenty years: there is medicine at the levels of midwife and village practitioner, the sweep of the learned Greek and Latin tradition of over a millennium; there is control of midwifery by the priest, therapy through liturgy, medicine as an expression of religious life for heretics, medicine invading theologians' discussion of earthly paradise; and so on. This book redresses this, providing an edition and translation of depositions of heresy suspects interrogated in Toulouse 1273-82, preserved in a copy of 1669. The book's introduction investigates the history and reliability of this copy, and, together with the edition, illuminates the inquisitors and scribes who produced the original register. The edited text shows a Cathar hierarchy in exile in Italy, a Cathar revival in Languedoc, and its destruction by a re-launched inquisition. Inquisitors' questioning led to depositions which are extraordinarily colourful and lively, and in this they anticipate the circumstantial detail of the early fourteenth century depositions upon which Le Roy Ladurie's famous Montaillou was based.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52692812792081,"sku":"NLS9789004188105","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004188105.jpg?v=1768561000"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-peter-biller.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
