These events form the background against which Robert Swanson sets his account of the changing role of the Church in late medieval society. The author begins with a consideration of the late medieval Church itself. He describes its institutional structure and its integration into the wider Catholic Church of western Europe, headed by the papacy in Rome. He looks at the clergy, examining their backgrounds and motives for entering the Church, and highlighting the influential role played by ecclesiastical patronage in making clerical careers. The second part of the book focuses on the growing tensions between Church and state, as secular and increasingly nationalistic rulers challenged the theoretical universality of Rome, and the Church's freedom from political control. The state was in the ascendant, with ecclesiastical being eroded by the increasing authority of the royal courts. Yet the Church was a formidable economic force. The author shows how whilst enduring a Christian economic morality which deprecated usury and the accumulation of wealth, as a massive landowner the Church was extensively involved in economic activity. Dr Swanson concludes with a discussion of spirituality, looking at both orthodox and unorthodox activity, and the attitudes of the laity to the Church and the religion it offered them. He discusses religious non-conformity, placing his interpretation of such movements as the Lollards, and the early stages of the English Reformation within the broader context of the late medieval search for religious reform and a reinvigorated spiritual life. This book contains a new updated bibliography and should be of interest to undergraduates and above in medieval and church history, religious studies and theology.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49550679310609,"sku":"GOR008782366","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50964113162513,"sku":"GOR003182482","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52324702585105,"sku":"GOR012536328","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0631186433.jpg?v=1750944037"},{"product_id":"church-retrospective-book-rn-swanson-9780952973300","title":"The Church Retrospective","description":"The concerns expressed range from the insistent break with the pagan past to create a Christian identity in the first centuries of the Church, through to the impact in the twentieth century of appeals to the original ideals of StClare; essays also investigate major periods of turmoil in the Church's history (notably the twelfth, sixteenth and nineteenth centuries) which entailed a reconsideration of its links with the past. The subjects covered embrace anumber of disciplines, from theology to art history, from the sociology of religion to the origins of a specifically Roman Catholic approach to archaeology. Throughout, the scope of the volume reflects the many and varied ways inwhich the legacy and heritage of the past has affected the life of the Church, and of individual Christians, over the centuries. Her status and role were debated in the Christological controversies of the fifth century; since the Reformation attitudes to Mary have defined confessional identity. With the emergence of feminism, Mary's function as female role model and status as antidote to Eve has provoked further debate and controversy. These articles survey and contribute to the continuing discussions of the role of Mary in the Church and its historical development. Ranging from early Byzantium to modern Ethiopia, examining issues including Reformation debates, local Genoese cults, and Victorian poetry, the volume demonstrates that Mary has constantly been a dynamic and formative influence throughout the history of the Christian religion. Dr Swanson examines the reaction to this situation from a hitherto unconsidered perspective: that of the universities to whom Europe turned to formulate the theories which would solve the problem. He examines the attempts by the academics to gain support for their various schemes and shows how these produced conflict at various levels: locally, between factions within individual universities; nationally, between rival universities, and between universities and their ecclesiastical and secular superiors; and internationally, as the universities adopted mutually exclusive attitudes and sometimnes clashed with their own popes. The concluding chapters show how the academics finally devised the conciliarist formula which led to the convocation of the Council of Pisa in 1409.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52403070664977,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52403071090961,"sku":"NLS9780521522267","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780521522267.jpg?v=1758759746"},{"product_id":"indulgences-in-late-medieval-england-book-r-n-swanson-9780521881203","title":"Indulgences in Late Medieval England","description":"Indulgences played a major role in medieval 'strategies for eternity', easing the journey through Purgatory to Heaven after death.
