Ein Projekt am Wuppertal-Institut fur Klima, Umwelt und Energie, in welchem die vorliegende Studie eingebunden war, hat mit groem Aufwand zum ersten Mal die globalen Flachenaufwendungen Deutschlands untersucht, welche auftreten, wenn die quantitativen Nutzungsziele nachwachsender Rohstoffe bis 2030 realisiert wurden. Das Ergebnis dabei ist eine erschreckende Flachenverknappung. Ziel der hiesigen Studie war es nun zu analysieren, inwiefern als notwendig erachtete alternative Flachenpotenziale freigesetzt werden konnen, wenn weniger tierisch basierte Nahrungsmittel in der BRD produziert bzw. konsumiert wurden. Die globalen Flachenfreisetzungen in der Landwirtschaft ergaben sich hierbei aus dem geringeren Bedarf an Tierfutter. Der grote Teil des Tierfutterbedarfs der BRD wird durch Selbsterzeugung in Deutschland gedeckt, wobei der Groteil der verfugbaren landwirtschaftlichen Flachen hierfur genutzt wird. In zwei Kapiteln der Studie wird einerseits das Thema der Flachenverfugbarkeit erortert, andererseits wird ausfuhrlich die in Nutzungspfade, Ziele und Umweltwirkungen von nachwachsenden Rohstoffen eingefuhrt. In dem analytischen Teil der Studie wird zum einen produktionsseitig die Herstellung von Futtermittel in Deutschland bis 2030 untersucht. Auf der Konsumseite wird der unter bestimmten Annahmen prognostizierte Verbrauch tierisch basierter Nahrungsmittel fur eben diesen Zeitraum berechnet. Fur beide Seiten wird die jeweilige globale Inanspruchnahme landwirtschaftlicher Flachen bzw. das eventuelle Freisetzungspotenzial aus den projizierten Entwicklungen ermittelt.
