The author argues that placement problems arise when exactly one fundamental ontology serves as the base for all entities, and will propose a pluralist alternative that takes the diversity of our conceptual resources and ontologies seriously. This general pluralist account is applied to issues in philosophy of mind to argue that contemporary debates about the mind-body problem are built on this problematic framework of placement problems.\u003c\/p\u003eThe starting point is the plurality of ontologies in scientific practice. Not only can we describe the world in terms of physical, biological, or psychological ontologies, but any serious engagement with scientific ontologies will identify more specific ontologies in each domain. For example, there is not one unified ontology for biology, but rather a diversity of scientific specializations with different ontological needs. Based on this account of scientific practice the author argues that there is no reason to assume that ontological unification must be possible everywhere. Without this ideal, the scope of ontological unification turns out to be an open empirical question and there is no need to present unification failures as philosophically puzzling placement problems.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49804655198481,"sku":"CIN0800627679G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51332100129041,"sku":"CIN0800627679VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53132884803857,"sku":"GOR006336128","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0800627679.jpg?v=1751264269"},{"product_id":"social-teaching-in-the-episcopal-church-book-robert-e-hood-9780819215338","title":"Social Teaching in the Episcopal Church","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50145556398353,"sku":"CIN0819215333G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50363356381457,"sku":"CIN0819215333A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0819215333.jpg?v=1751139240"},{"product_id":"must-god-remain-greek-book-robert-e-hood-9780800624491","title":"Must God Remain Greek?","description":"In part this book is an issue of justice, of reverencing the autonomy and integrity of peoples whose non-Western values and thought patterns need not be jettisoned by their Christian commitment. At the heart of Hood's memoir is his proud and talented mother, who is determined that her headstrong son will become somebody. But the impish boy is more interested in sports than poetry recitations or declamation contests. Anxious to enter the war, seventeen-year-old Hood enlists in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and serves on Guam. As Hood achieves success, he meets some of the distinguished artists and authors of the twentieth century.
