(Traditions of Devonshire, Nursery Rhyme, 1883) He brooked no insult, would not be cheated, would not be pushed around. He bent a knee to no man. He was the King of Craw and the powers-that-be wanted him gone. The story is set in the Roaring Twenties in Kentucky's Capital City. It spins around John Fallis, a legendary figure in Bluegrass folklore, and two boys who fall into his orbit. A successful businessman, a political power, a gambler, a bootlegger, movie-star handsome, and charismatically compelling, John Fallis was the champion of the poor and powerless and the scourge of the Establishment. The story begins just before the night of the The Big Shoot-Out when JF takes on the entire city police force and ends with his bullet-riddled body on a craps table in Craw in what was said to be a gambling fight - but what many believe was a hit ordered by powerful forces in the city. Though this is a story, not a history, most of it happened. John Fallis, Craw, Crawfish Bottom are names that still resonate and questions about his death are still unanswered. This is the first piece of fiction built around the man and the place. It is rich in action and drama, most particularly for readers drawn to the mystery of why men do the things they do, and to the never ending struggle between good and evil. Whatever you ultimately decide about JF's place on that scale - and the particulars of his death - you won't be bored.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51010997125393,"sku":"NIN9780990679042","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51328226263313,"sku":"CIN0990679047G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0990679047.jpg?v=1751109531"},{"product_id":"our-own-little-fictions-book-ron-rhody-9781732045217","title":"Our Own Little Fictions","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51048754774289,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51048757526801,"sku":"NIN9781732045217","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1732045216.jpg?v=1751279758"},{"product_id":"when-theo-came-home-book-ron-rhody-9780982993101","title":"When THEO Came Home","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51083874599185,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51083876958481,"sku":"NIN9780982993101","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0982993102.jpg?v=1751397098"},{"product_id":"one-last-strike-before-dark-book-ron-rhody-9781734168792","title":"One Last Strike Before Dark","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51258650886417,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51258652950801,"sku":"NIN9781734168792","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/173416879X.jpg?v=1751090514"},{"product_id":"our-own-little-fictions-second-edition-book-ron-rhody-9781734168716","title":"OUR OWN LITTLE FICTIONS - Second Edition","description":"FOTPRINTS - in this new version with color photos, the story for continues about a slice of time, and a place, and cluster of people worth remembering. It begins in a small river town in the Bluegrass of Kentucky and concerns itself with beginnings and becomingls, with home places and who you can count on, and where untaken roads lead.A few early readers comment: A beautifully written remembrance of a young man lifted and loved through the sheer ordinariness of family and coming of age. Well worth the read. Cynthia Kasabian, CKB Consultants, San Francisco. An unconventional book but strangely engaging. Not a must read. But definitely a glad I did read. Annette Bowen, Inside\/Outside, Atlanta. Fascinating  This book is like a conversation on paper. Charlie Baglan, Kentucky Afield radio, Frankfort, Ky. Deeply personal, often moving. Bob Irelan, author, Rancho Murrieta. Ca. Thought provoking. It causes readers, especially in today's all-consuming digital world, to reflect on how memories have shaped their lives. No one knows why he is there or how he got there, or whether his death is accident or murder. The high-profile mystery remains for thirty years until an odd chain of events leads columnist Theo Clark to a story he cannot write--the story of the Dannans and Jesse Bristow. The search takes place in the middle of Bristow's bitterly fought governor's race, and leads Theo from a remote Melungeon village and the mystery of the Lost Colony to the coal mines of Harlem County and the aftermath of The Battle At Evarts. There is a perfect murder to confront, a scandal to contain, and a forsaken lover to comfort. Rhody knows his place and his time well and puts the reader in both with a fast paced and riveting tale. Theo's compulsion to make things right leads to a disturbing, but strangely satisfying, climax.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53008815358225,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53008815522065,"sku":"NIN9780578007601","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780578007601.jpg?v=1767968526"},{"product_id":"ceo-s-playbook-book-ron-rhody-9780967067902","title":"Ceo's Playbook","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53433012748561,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53433013141777,"sku":"CIN0967067901G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780967067902.jpg?v=1776466852"},{"product_id":"theo-the-mouthful-of-ashes-book-ron-rhody-9780982993163","title":"THEO \u0026 The Mouthful of Ashes","description":"A prominent widow is found dead at the foot of the cellar stairs in the family home on a farm in the lush Bluegrass section of Kentucky. Her head has been bashed in by an old flatiron found near the body and her mouth stuffed full of ashes. The county is shocked - horrified at the brutality of the murder and mystified at the use of the ashes. Theo Clark, a young Marine veteran of the Korean War, working part time at the local newspaper while finishing up his interrupted college career, is assigned to cover the story because no experienced reporters are around when the tip comes in. A band of wandering Gypsies are suspected, as is another young Marine veteran of Korea with drug and alcohol problems. Even the victim's married daughter, her only child, is a suspect. Theo has never covered a murder but if he can unravel this mystery it can be his ticket to the start of an exceptional career. On the surface a mystery tale, Theo \u0026amp; The Mouthful of Ashes is also an exploration of the social and political dynamics at play in an important small town in the mid-1950s and of the draw home-place has on individuals. It is the prequel to Theo's Story and carries Theo from his return from the war to the beginning of his career.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53593305448721,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53593305743633,"sku":"NIN9780982993163","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780982993163.jpg?v=1779684211"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-ron-rhody.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
