Beadle left his home in Buffalo, New York, and set out for the territories to see about some land. Specifically, Beadle had a stake in the Sulphur Springs Land Company, an enterprise that proposed to build the community of Saratoga just north of Omaha for prospective settlers, who were arriving by the boatload. In diary pages and letters home, Beadle noted his impressions-the details, anecdotes, and characters that filled his days-and in doing so, left a remarkable record of a bygone way of life in the American West. Beginning with his three-month journey westward, Beadle takes us from the hardships and amusements of travel on the Big Muddy to the magnificent sight of a prairie fire at night, from the political propaganda abroad in the slavery stronghold of Kansas to the realities of doing business on the Nebraska frontier. Whether describing roads or water routes, mishaps or accommodations, finances, politics, or daily life, Beadle writes with an immediacy and character that make his diary as entertaining as it is informative-a living, intimate chapter of American history. Erastus F. Beadle was born in New York State in 1821. In 1857 he went west to Omaha, where he failed to make his fortune. In 1858 he returned to New York, where he prospered as senior partner of Beadle and Adams, publisher of the popular Beadle's Dime Novels. Ronald C. Naugle is Huge-Kinne Professor of History at Nebraska Wesleyan University. He is coeditor of Nebraska Quilts and Quiltmakers (Nebraska 1991) and coauthor of History of Nebraska (Nebraska 1997).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49655127343377,"sku":"GOR010826991","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51007578669329,"sku":"NIN9780803261877","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52499349766417,"sku":"CIN080326187XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/080326187X.jpg?v=1764162319"},{"product_id":"brief-history-of-nebraska-book-ronald-c-naugle-9780933307391","title":"A Brief History of Nebraska","description":"This book is a short treatment of a long history. Nebraska has been inundated by ancient seas, carved by glaciers, and settled by ancient cultures who learned to survive in a land prone to extremes of climate. As a state, Nebraska was born out of the Civil War, shaped by railroads, and built by immigrants. Settlers were drawn by promises of free land and abundant rain. They endured droughts and economic depressions. They fought for political reforms, fought world wars, and sometimes fought each other. Along the way Nebraskans chose a unique form of government and re-invented their communities under new conditions. A Brief History of Nebraska is a story of continual change, the back story of the place and people we know today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51009430618385,"sku":"NIN9780933307391","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51444284490001,"sku":"GOR014283748","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/093330739X.jpg?v=1761391003"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-ronald-c-naugle.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
