This is a story of adapation and resilience, as over the centuries the inhabitants of Hoddlesden, Blacksnape, Eccleshill, Yate and Pickup Bank have had to respond to factors which have largely been outside of their control. Dr Parker has managed to combine excellent research, based on good primary and secondary sources, with a highly readable style. Studying information contained within census returns he is able to reveal the ever-changing patterns of population, showing, for example, that although many people left the villages to pursue work, significant numbers of these migrants returned to their place of birth. His careful reading of agricultural parish returns and other original sources has allowed him to portray all aspects of life in the communities, including the existence and nature of farm buildings, the size of holdings, family contributions to farm work and sources of farm household income.  He explains the huge impact on the settlements of the new cotton mills, which sucked labour from the countryside, altering patterns of rural life totally. He looks at what this meant in terms of housing, family life and village life, comparing these communities with other 'factory villages' and 'cotton towns'. Accounts such as this are invaluable, providing a wealth of new insight into the history of little-known localities and leaving a unique record for future generations. Hoddlesden and its satellite villages will appeal to anyone connected to the villages but also more widely to local and family historians and all those who have an interest in the broader history of Lancashire and the British Isles.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49513518006545,"sku":"GOR005624149","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53179600371985,"sku":"GOR006823746","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/190424484X.jpg?v=1751420787"},{"product_id":"change-and-continuity-in-children-s-services-book-roy-parker-9781447322221","title":"Change and Continuity in Children's Services","description":"This collection of 12 new and revised essays on child care and children's services, written by leading child welfare historian Roy Parker, draws on his lifetime of research in this area. Over recent years, the Department of Health has commissioned a range of studies on adoption. They have since set up a working party - largely comprising practitioners - to review the results of these studies and draw out the implications for practice and policy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49603174498577,"sku":"GOR001753358","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52149750202641,"sku":"NLS9780471852049","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/047185204X.jpg?v=1751198161"},{"product_id":"uprooted-book-roy-parker-9781847426680","title":"Uprooted","description":"This book explores the economic, religious, political and personal forces that led to some 80,000 British children being sent to Canada between 1867 and 1915. How did this come about? What were the motives and methods of the people involved? Why did it come to an end? What effects did it have on the children involved and what eventually became of them? These are the questions Roy Parker explores in this meticulously researched work. His book - humane and highly professional - will capture and hold the interest of many: the academic, the practitioner and the general reader.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50130004672785,"sku":"CIN1847426689G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50153610838289,"sku":"GOR007454711","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51392674922769,"sku":"GOR007667245","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52386184593681,"sku":"NLS9781847426680","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1847426689.jpg?v=1751460998"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-roy-parker.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
