In this, the first full survey of her work, Sacha Craddock shows how, after her formative years spent in Italy and then London, where she was a graduate of the Slade, Jeanne Masoero has followed a long path of searching technical and spiritual development with an unshakable individuality. Her concern with colour, light and spatial depth has been evident from the great clouds and glowing bars of colour of the first London exhibitions at the Angela Flowers Gallery and the Hayward, to the mature work where, using her own unique method of composition, she creates thousands of tiny grains of colour which - seeming themselves to hover between matter and energy, colour and light - cluster, collide or stream out like galactic organisms across a pure white field of cosmic space. Further critical essays by Guy Brett and Sarah Kent deal with Jeanne Masoero's art in the context of contemporary currents of thought. Edward Rutherfurd's biographical essay includes an account of her family's links to the Italian partisans and her perilous wartime journey to Britain.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49615570698513,"sku":"GOR010503031","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853318522.jpg?v=1751011779"},{"product_id":"jeanne-masoero-book-sacha-craddock-9780853318545","title":"Jeanne Masoero","description":"This is the first book on artist Jeanne Masoero, one of the leading exponents of 'lyrical abstraction' - a term used by the English critic Sarah Kent to describe a range of late twentieth-century artists whose work, although abstract, is also related to and in communion with the external world, and which has a certain lyrical quality. Her particular concern with colour, light and spatial depth has been evident from the great clouds and glowing bars of colour of the first London exhibitions, to the mature work of the present where, using her own, unique method of composition, she creates thousands of tiny grains of colour, which combine to form paintings of striking power and light. Jeanne Masoero is an English citizen but the roots of her culture are European. At Goldsmiths College, London she began a lifelong friendship with the constructivist artists Kenneth and Mary Martin. She proceeded to the Slade, where she became a star pupil of William Coldstream. Her earliest paintings were made with transparent layers of fluid colour on a white ground, and she moved from there to using torn canvas, soaked in thinned paint, to provide the colour field with a new and calculated stress factor. A visit to the Mayan sites in the Yucatan led to a wholly new series of works using all white folded paper and layered reliefs. This gave rise to her Basis for Light exhibitions at the ICA, London and the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham in 1979. The pursuit of a more deep-seated structure, combined with a study of American Indian patterns and of mapping techniques, led Masoero to produce a large body of black-and-white work, before finally returning to colour in the Roads and Sky series of the early 1980s.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49995066016017,"sku":"GOR005786075","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853318549.jpg?v=1751422533"},{"product_id":"jose-davila-book-sacha-craddock-9783775744225","title":"Jose Davila","description":"The force of gravity slows objects that move up and steadily accelerates those that move down. It is what causes bodies to be drawn to the surface of the Earth and that distant bodies such as planets and stars experience a force that holds them together and in motion. The sculptural work of Mexican artist Jose Dávila (*1974) draws on these forces and shows the solidity and fragility of pieces of stone and glass. Stone blocks that are one on another in a constant balance of weights, characterized by the rigidity and regularity of their structures. Dávila’s works create a powerful interplay of fragility and strength, balance and equilibrium. The publication The Elephant and the Feather presents his sculptural works from 2014 to 2017 including the current show at the Kunsthalle Hamburg.
