The angel and the demon have been studying Talmud together for centuries, but pogroms and the search for a new life have drawn the young people from their village to America. And suddenly a murder forces the study partners to follow them. Traveling through Warsaw and Hamburg, Uriel and Ashel encounter humans in need of their help, including Rose Cohen, whose best friend, and the love of her life, has abandoned her to marry a man, and Essie Zucker, a scholarly girl who is taking the boat to America to support her family. When the group arrives at Ellis Island, Essie and Little Ash are detained by the US customs officials - Essie because of her vision, and Little Ash because he runs afoul of a doctor who is also a demon. It's up to the naive and trusting Uriel and the fiery Rose to help them get free, a task which will require the efforts of New York's angels, demons, and justice-minded humans combined. But life on Manhattan's Lower East Side is not what Uriel, Little Ash, Rose or Essie expected, and soon they find themselves embroiled in a strike against the Boaz Brothers' Garment Factory together with a demon named Emma, an angel named Malke, and Little Ash's slick older brother - Junior. When a worker at the factory is murdered and Uriel and Little Ash find the body, they two of them set out to make sure justice is served. Along the way they realize that America has changed a lot about both of them, but not the way they feel about each other. We're proud to introduce the world to Sacha Cohen with this brilliantly original immigrant fairy tale about humanity, community, and social justice in a world in desperate need of repair.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49994344726801,"sku":"CIN1646141768G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50024341537041,"sku":"GOR013586385","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51043267313937,"sku":"NIN9781646141760","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51417769345297,"sku":"CIN1646141768VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1646141768.jpg?v=1751214673"},{"product_id":"when-the-angels-left-the-old-country-book-sacha-lamb-9781646144556","title":"When the Angels Left the Old Country","description":"For fans of Good Omens — a queer immigrant fairytale about individual purpose, the fluid nature of identity, and the power of love to change and endure. Uriel the angel and Little Ash (short for Ashmedai) are the only two supernatural creatures in their shtetl (which is so tiny, it doesn't have a name other than Shtetl). The angel and the demon have been studying together for centuries, but pogroms and the search for a new life have drawn all the young people from their village to America. When one of those young emigrants goes missing, Uriel and Little Ash set off to find her. Along the way the angel and demon encounter humans in need of their help, including Rose Cohen, whose best friend (and the love of her life) has abandoned her to marry a man, and Malke Shulman, whose father died mysteriously on his way to America. But there are obstacles ahead of them as difficult as what they’ve left behind. Medical exams (and demons) at Ellis Island. Corrupt officials, cruel mob bosses, murderers, poverty. The streets are far from paved with gold.   W I N N E R Stonewall Book Award • Michael L. You don’t have to be Jewish to love Sacha Lamb—you only have to read.” —New York Times Bestseller Amy Bloom “I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH!!!! I read it in two days and then I spent the next two weeks thinking about it. Literally forgot to take my lunch break at work because I was busy thinking about it. This book is SO fun and funny and beautiful. Inherently, inextricably deeply queer-and-Jewish in a way that makes my brain buzz. I am obsessed.” —Piera Varela, Porter Square Books “I love this book more than I can say (but I’ll try!) I was delighted by the wry narrative voice of this book from the first paragraph. The author perfectly captures the voice of a Jewish folk tale within an impeccably researched early 20th century setting that includes Yiddish, striking factory workers, and revolutionary coffee houses. It gave me so many feelings about identity, love, and their obligations to the world, themselves, and each other. This story will forever have a place in my heart and in my canon of favorite books. I can’t wait to have it on my shelves!” —Marianne Wald, East City Bookshop “A beautiful story of an angel and demon set on helping an emigrant from their shtetl, and the fierce girl that joins them on the way... To keep from being discovered, she takes on the male identity of Isser Jacobs — but it soon becomes clear that there is a real Isser Jacobs, and people want him dead. Her mistaken identity takes Sorel into the dark underworld of her small city in the Pale of Settlement, where smugglers, forgers, and wicked angels fight for control of the Jewish community. In order to make it out, Sorel must discover who Isser Jacobs really is — and who she wants to be.   P R A I S E   Best of the Year: Boston Globe • The Horn Book   \"Thrums with fervent tension… steeped in Jewish folklore, queer awakening, and a reckoning of body and spirit…offers a fresh way into the messy tangle of gender, its freedoms, and its restrictions.”  —Reactor \"Rooted in Jewish history and brimming with magic, The Forbidden Book is at once a heart-pounding mystery and a poignant tale of identity and found family.
