En 1852 ingreso en el Colegio de San Agustin, que aplicaba una pedagogia muy avanzada para la epoca. Obtuvo el titulo de bachiller en Artes en 1862, en el Instituto de La Laguna, y empezo a publicar poemas satiricos, ensayos y cuentos en la prensa local. Tambien se destaco por su interes por el dibujo y la pintura. En septiembre de 1862 Galdos se fue a vivir a Madrid y se matriculo en la universidad. Alli conocio al fundador de la Institucion Libre de Ensenanza, Francisco Giner de los Rios, que le alento a escribir y le hizo conocer el krausismo. Por entonces frecuento los teatros de Madrid y organizo la Tertulia Canaria. En 1865 empezo a escribir en los periodicos La Nacion y El Debate, y en la Revista del Movimiento Intelectual de Europa. Hacia 1867 hizo su primer viaje al extranjero, como corresponsal en Paris en la Exposicion Universal. Galdos publico en 1870 La Fontana de Oro, su primera novela. La Sombra fue publicada en noviembre de 1870 por entregas en La Revista de Espana. Y en 1873 comenzo a publicar la que se puede considerar su obra maestra, los Episodios nacionales, donde refleja la vida intima de los espanoles del siglo XIX y los acontecimientos de la historia nacional que marcaron el destino de Espana. La obra tiene cuarenta y seis episodios en cinco series de diez novelas cada una, salvo la ultima, inconclusa. Empiezan con la batalla de Trafalgar y terminan con la Restauracion borbonica en Espana. Tuvo una hija natural en 1891 de una madre que se suicido, Lorenza Cobian. Y se relaciono con la actriz Concha Morell y la novelista Emilia Pardo Bazan.
