Their letters and diaries make it possible for us to know them and share their feelings in detail: at home at Wagley Hall in Worcestershire and in fashionable society; at country houses and on tours to the continent; in the schoolroom and embarking on courtship and marriage; in happiness and in adversity. Despite having eight very successful brothers, the girls emerge in their own right as strong characters, whose piety did not inhibit their exuberance and \"joie de vivre\". Their life was changed for ever by the death of their mother, Mary, shortly after the birth of her 12th child in 1857. Until they married, Meriel, Lucy and Lavinia in turn had to take on the responsibility of running Hegley and all that entailed, as well as being the mistress of the house on formal occasions. Lord Lyttelton's daughters provided the domestic support for their idiosyncratic father who, as Endowed Schools Commissioner, played a major role in reforming girls' education. Two of the girls married prominent men. Lucy, herself later a pioneer in women's education, married Lord Frederick Cavendish, who became Chief Secretary for Ireland in 1882 and was tragically murdered by Irish patriots in Phoenix Park, Dublin, the day he arrived. Lavinia married Edward Talbot, the first Warden of Keble College, Oxford. May was a close friend of Hubert Parry, the composer, and might well have married Arthur Balfour, the future Prime Minister, but she died at the age of 25.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49521367220497,"sku":"GOR003949359","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50486469918993,"sku":"GOR012574767","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52527165931793,"sku":"GOR001846997","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1852853336.jpg?v=1751427496"},{"product_id":"victorian-girls-book-sheila-fletcher-9781852851507","title":"Victorian Girls","description":"Meriel, Lucy, Lavina and May, the daughters of George, fourth Lord Lyttelton, were the nieces of the Prime Minister William Gladstone, with whose family they were on intimate terms. She made her name before the Great War as the most eloquent speaker in the non-militant suffrage body, the NUWSS. Trying at best to fulfil her vocation as a preacher, if not as a priest, she worked for many years as a minister with her own congregation and her own church. This book charts the life and career of Maude Royden, highlighting the complex interplay between feminism and religion in turn-of-the-century Britain. Sheila Fletcher traces the developments of religious thought from her early life and time at Oxford to her emergence as the leading advocate of women's ordination. An Anglican possessed of deep religious conviction, she felt the priesthood to be her calling, and believed passionately in priesthood for women. Forced to make her international reputation as a preacher to the Free Church in London's Guildhouse, Royden castigated the Bishops for denying spiritual equality to women as well as men. Her private life was equally unusual and colourful: for more than 40 years she maintained a both passionate and platonic relationship with Hudson Shaw, a married clergyman, and a close friendship with his wife. Only after her death, did Shaw and Royden marry, only weeks before Shaw's own death at the age of 85. This book chronicles the opening of the struggle for women's ordination.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49617752817937,"sku":"GOR008606302","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49654933684497,"sku":"GOR012191533","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49655734698257,"sku":"GOR013428455","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0631154221.jpg?v=1751041370"},{"product_id":"feminists-and-bureaucrats-book-sheila-fletcher-9780521228800","title":"Feminists and Bureaucrats","description":"A radical measure, the Endowed Schools Act of 1869, empowered Commissioners to prise endowment from the old grammar schools and to set up, for the first time, grammar schools for girls. Sheila Fletcher shows how, in practice, such attempts met determined opposition and argues that what was actually secured for girls depended largely on the zeal and persistence of the civil servants administering the Act. The first of these, the Endowed Schools Commissioners, presided over by Gladstone's friend and relative Lord Lyttelton, were staunch supporters of Women's education, but zeal proved their undoing. In 1874 they were dismissed by the Conservatives and the working of the Act was placed in the 'safe' hands of the Charity Commissioners. Feminist concern that girls would suffer from this changeover proved well founded; their share in endowments fell sharply in the reign of the Charity Commissioners which lasted until the end of the century. Indeed, the contrast between the two Commissions highlights the extent to which progress in an area dear to the heart of the women's movement was determined by administrators.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49633424867601,"sku":"GOR010208729","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53292788613393,"sku":"GOR010210617","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0521228808.jpg?v=1750879813"},{"product_id":"another-shore-rare-book-sheila-fletcher-1653634324olb","title":"Another Shore","description":"1955.
