His buildings are sometimes soaring and birdlike, sometimes simple, grounded, and evocative of the Japanese aesthetic, but always harmoniously integrated with, and respectful of, their surrounding environments.   Ban has designed projects at both ends of the client spectrum: from one-room temporary houses made of paper tubes for earthquake refugees worldwide to a 14,000 square-foot country house in Sharon, Connecticut, his first US commission. His humanitarian efforts and his interest in recyclable, affordable, natural materials have won praise and attention from museums and critics in America and Europe. Ban's 'Curtain Wall House' was a favourite entry in the Museum of Modern Art's 'Un-Private House' exhibition in 1999. He has gone on to design a museum for children in Japan, a canal museum in France, and a private art museum in Belgium. He was included in the 2000 and 2002 Venice Biennales, and created the Japan Pavilion for Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany. He was a member of the Think team of architects selected in February 2003 as one of two final teams to compete for the commission to design the new World Trade Center site in New York.   This monograph is only the second book on Ban in print and, unlike the first publication, it is impressively up-to-the-minute and exhaustive. Designed in Japan and in collaboration with Ban himself, Shigeru Ban is divided into sections that reflect with sensitivity the architect's approach to materials, and presents 32 entire projects - all of which are illustrated with colour photographs, plans and sketches.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49576545714449,"sku":"GOR009899223","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714841943.jpg?v=1751327708"},{"product_id":"shigeru-ban-timber-in-architecture-book-shigeru-ban-9780847872220","title":"Shigeru Ban: Timber in Architecture","description":"Despite being one of the oldest building materials, wood is revolutionising the way we design and construct buildings today. Criteria such as a changing work-life balance and working for a carbon-neutral future allow us to better account for the resources that buildings use and their effect on the natural environment. Studies have also shown the positive impacts of wood on health, wellness, and working toward equity in our local communities as we create beautiful spaces in which to gather, learn, and live. Initially applied in the early 2000s as a decorative element in the facade of buildings, mass timber is increasingly seen as an alternative to traditional steel-and-concrete construction. With advances in technology, mass timber is now even used in the structural frame of tall buildings. Featured in this title is a comprehensive survey of over 50 buildings. From museum projects like the Aspen Museum of Art to Pompidou Metz, the new global headquarters for Swatch and temporary shelters for both natural and man-made disasters, they showcase the state of the art in this emerging technology, one that imagines novel applications for this most ancient of building materials, as well as Mount Fuji World Heritage Center, La Seine Musicale Performance Hall in Paris, the Oita Prefectural Museum, and the 19-story Terrace House in Vancouver, the world s tallest mass timber building, scheduled for completion in 2022.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49740775391505,"sku":"NGR9780847872220","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/084787222X.jpg?v=1751233481"},{"product_id":"3-x-3-architecture-of-suyama-peterson-deguchi-book-shigeru-ban-9780979539572","title":"3 x 3: Architecture of Suyama Peterson Deguchi","description":"In \"3 x 3\", the recent work of Seattle-based architecture firm Suyama Peterson Deguchi is broken down into a case study of three recently constructed residences. Sharing inherent architectonic characteristics and employing similar design philosophies, these homes are tested on three different kinds of sites and topographies: a remote island getaway, perched high along a rocky bluff affording big views of the archipelago below; a long and narrow site in a historic beach community on Puget Sound; and, a site situated on a golf course fairway, surrounded by homes built in more traditional styles.Founded in 1971, the firm quickly became known for innovative designs that draw from the rich traditions of Japanese and Northwest Contemporary architecture. The hallmark of their internationally published and awarded work is its mastery of scale and proportion, sophisticated detailing and a restrained material palette. SPD brings together the site and the building, the materials and the details to create enduring architecture that reveals elemental truths about nature, people and architecture. With complete sets of drawings, photographs and text, \"3 x 3\" documents the Firm's pursuit of timeless and elegant design that established their reputation as one of the leading architecture firms in the Pacific Northwest.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50333027729681,"sku":"CIN0979539579G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53433005965585,"sku":"CIN0979539579VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0979539579.jpg?v=1751266594"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-shigeru-ban.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
