Yet the Weaving Workshop, the longest standing and most successful of all Bauhaus workshops, has been neglected. Why? For one simple reason - its artists were almost all female. When these brilliantly talented women arrived at the school, they soon found that Gropius could not sustain his ringing declaration of equality between the beautiful and the strong gender. Textiles were to be women's work. The consequences - both in the early days of artistic expression in Weimar and in later developments for industry - could hardly have been foreseen. The Bauhaus weavers produced fabrics which incorporated new or unusual materials, which had acoustic and light-reflecting properties, and which were reversible. They produced multi-layered fabrics, cloths with double and triple weaves, and later made extensive use of the Jacquard loom. In this study, illustrated with rare or little seen illustrations of the works themselves, Sigrid Wortmann Weltge recreates the heady atmosphere of creative excitement at the Bauhaus.  Original archival research, and interviews both with survivors and their students and leading contemporary designers, detail the workshop's history and its enduring legacy. When the Nazis closed the institution in 1933, its members dispersed to Switzerland, Holland, England, France, Russia, Mexico and many centres in the United States. This book unearths the missing chapter in the story of the most important institution in the history of modern design, and resurrects the work of gifted craftswomen, for too long denied their due as pioneers in their field.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50463104631057,"sku":"GOR008758015","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53338740097297,"sku":"GOR006289728","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0500236585.jpg?v=1751166976"},{"product_id":"bauhaus-textiles-book-sigrid-wortmann-weltge-9780500280348","title":"Bauhaus Textiles","description":"Longest standing and most successful of all Bauhaus enterprises was the Weaving Workshop, whose talented female designers created beautiful textiles, pouring all their energy and talent into this fresh and challenging field of interest. Embracing advanced technology, they used unusual materials (such as cellophane and early synthetics), and made reversible fabrics with acoustic and light-reflecting properties as well as other innovative experimental textiles. Their striking, brightly coloured geometric designs generated renewed interest in hand-weaving and a new professionalism in designing fabrics for mass-production. In this study, illustrated with both full-colour and rare historical photographs, Sigrid Wortmann Weltge recreates the atmosphere of excitement and creativity at the Bauhaus. Original archival research, as well as interviews with survivors and their students and with leading contemporary designers, detail the workshop's history and its legacy: wonderful fabrics still being produced today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50657117536529,"sku":"GOR014025924","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50688786399505,"sku":"GOR003371728","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51350883402001,"sku":"CIN0500280347VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0500280347.jpg?v=1750846051"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-sigrid-wortmann-weltge.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
