It is based on the archaeological evidence from the first major excavations to be carried out in Birmingham city centre. The book is written in a lively, accessible style and contains over 100 illustrations, most in colour. It provides new evidence of Birmingham's origins and its growth as a market town and industrial centre in the medieval period. The book also offers a new perspective on the transformation of Birmingham into 'the first manufacturing town in the world' in the 18th and 19th centuries. A large part of the book is devoted to the excavation of St. Martin's Churchyard, which uncovered 857 burials - in simple graves and elaborate tombs - of the people who made the Industrial Revolution. The burials are explored in fascinating detail, together with analysis of the health of the population based on scientific study of the skeletons. New research reveals intimate details of the lives of the men and women of the town of a thousand trades. If you are interested in the history of Birmingham, this book is essential reading.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49519439347985,"sku":"GOR004617346","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49733059838225,"sku":"NGR9781858582429","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51410392088849,"sku":"GOR003684347","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1858582423.jpg?v=1750867163"},{"product_id":"where-rivers-meet-book-simon-buteux-9781902771786","title":"Where Rivers Meet","description":"This book is the story of an area of landscape in the English  Midlands from earliest prehistory to around AD 900. Although it  looks like a typical rural landscape, archaeological research,  much of it in advance of quarrying, has revealed that this area  has a long and remarkable history of occupation stretching back  to the Ice Age. In particular at Catholme the project has  revealed spectacular monuments from the Neolithic and Bronze Age  (including a 'woodhenge-type' monument, a 'sunburst' monument and  a cursus) that represent a regional expression of the monumental  traditions of the age of Stonehenge.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49975428350225,"sku":"GOR009622362","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52850741051665,"sku":"GOR014641012","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1902771788.jpg?v=1751433526"},{"product_id":"digging-up-the-ice-age-book-simon-buteux-9781905739240","title":"Digging up the Ice Age","description":"For over a hundred years, sand and gravel quarrying has been of enormous benefit to geology, palaeontology and archaeology - quarries have been the main source of Ice Age fossils and finds. It is because of deep excavations into Ice Age sediments that the geological sequences, the fossil remains of plants and animals, and the stone tools of Britain's earliest human inhabitants have come to light. This handbook, packed with practical information and guidance is written for all charged with caring for the natural and historic environment, geologists and archaeologists and anybody with an interest in our past and future, and not least those working in the quarry industry.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51523698098449,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51523698262289,"sku":"NGR9781905739240","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1905739249.jpg?v=1751282085"},{"product_id":"settlements-at-skaill-deerness-orkney-book-simon-buteux-9780860548645","title":"Settlements at Skaill, Deerness, Orkney","description":"This book is a detailed report on the excavations carried out by Peter Gelling between 1963 and 1981. The investigations, of an extensive area of Iron Age, Roman and Saxon landscape containing several settlement foci, were undertaken between January and September 1999. The 1999 investigations followed a programme of archaeological evaluation of the 193 hectare site in 1997 and 1998, comprising a desk-based assessment, aerial photographic assessment, extensive fieldwalking, geophysical survey and trial trenching. The site lies at the interface between the higher quality agricultural land and permeable geologies of Upper Nene Valley at Northampton and the boulder clay uplands of the Salcey and Whittlewood Forest areas. From the early prehistoric period onwards the sands and gravels had been favoured for settlement, a situation seen in microcosm at Grange Park, with the claylands probably remaining heavily wooded until they were largely cleared in the Iron Age and Roman periods. The Iron Age settlements at Grange Park may be seen as outliers of the concentration of settlements in the Upper Nene Valley around Hunsbury hillfort. In the Early and Middle Saxon periods the claylands appear to have been largely abandoned for agriculture, with resultant regeneration of woodland, before in the Late Saxon and medieval periods intensive arable exploitation expanded over most of the claylands from nucleated villages generally located on the permeable geologies. Again the site at Grange Park reflects this broader pattern in microcosm, with the whole of the 193 hectare site being brought into ridge-and-furrow cultivation during the medieval period, as evidenced by documentary and cartographic sources, aerial photographs and surviving earthworks.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52534556557585,"sku":"NLS9781841719979","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781841719979.jpg?v=1760668653"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-simon-buteux.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
