Berlin always felt a special affinity for scholars from Eastern Europe, and the unique chemistry between him and this younger enthusiast for his ideas yielded a remarkable body of material, most of it hitherto unpublished. Divided into four sections, the book begins with a selection from the correspondence between Berlin and Polanowska-Sygulska dating from 1983 to 1997. These letters are published here in their entirety for the first time. The second section comprises two interviews Berlin gave in 1991 for Polish periodicals. Next come edited transcripts of a number of recorded conversations that took place between 1986 and 1995. In one conversation, Berlin tellingly recalls his childhood and youth. In other exchanges, the famous conversationalist is pressed to be more precise about some of his most contested views, particularly his concepts of liberty and value pluralism, and to give his response to criticism of these ideas by a wide range of authors. In one of his last letters to Dr. Polanowska-Sygulska, Berlin stated, I have never expressed myself so clearly before, I believe. The book concludes with a collection of articles on Berlin's thought by Dr. Polanowska-Sygulska, stemming from her long-standing immersion in his work. Berlin himself thoroughly discussed three of these with the author and approved their publication. Complete with a foreword by Henry Hardy, Berlin's editor and collaborator of thirty years, and now one of his literary trustees, this fascinating collection of letters, conversations, and articles sheds considerable light on Berlin's thinking, clarifying some of the central themes of his philosophy.
the-hedgehog-and-the-fox-an-essay-on-tolstoy-s-view-of-history-rare-book-sir-isaiah-berlin-1696928570bil
The Hedgehog and The Fox: An Essay on Tolstoy's View of History
1967. The entire Collector's Series is now available on CD. This particular talk was recorded in 1952, at the Self-Realization Fellowship headquarters in Los Angeles, on the occasion of Paramahansa Yogananda's birthday - just two months before his passing. In this spontaneous outpouring of his heart, he touches on the entire spectrum of spiritual living. Through personal stories and practical guidance, he explains why finding God is the only permanent solution to the enduring problems of human existence. The outstanding quality of the recordings in this series brings Yogananda intimately close to the listener. It provides a penetrating, lucid, and comprehensive introduction to Marx as theorist of the socialist revolution, illuminating his personality and ideas, and concentrating on those which have historically formed the central core of Marxism as a theory and practice. Berlin goes on to present an account of Marx's life as one of the most influential and incendiary social philosophers of the twentieth century and depicts the social and political atmosphere in which Marx wrote.
This edition includes a new introduction by Alan Ryan which traces the place of Berlin's Marx from its pre-World War I publication to the present, and elucidates why Berlin's portrait, in the midst of voluminous writings about Marx, remains the classic account of the personal and political side of this monumental figure.

A New York Times Notable Book of the Year

For anyone wanting to understand the twists and turns of the history of ideas, this book will be indispensable.―John Gray, New York Times Book Review

The Sense of Reality was the last new collection of essays published by Isaiah Berlin in his lifetime. All informed by Berlin's lifelong fascination with the history of ideas, these engaging studies range widely: the subjects explored include realism in history; judgment in politics; the history of socialism; the nature and impact of Marxism; the radical cultural revolution instigated by the Romantics; Russian notions of artistic commitment; and the origins and practice of nationalism.
