Assessing the roles pottery has played throughout the history of China, this book also discusses its impact on the ceramic industries of the rest of the world. From the earliest earthenwares to the exotic burial figures of the Tang, from the classic forms and subtle glazes of the Song to the famous porcelains created especially for export or imperial tastes, the book draws upon the collections of the British Museum for illustrations. Consideration is paid to the purposes for which the ceramics of each period were made, how their production was organised, and what effect local conditions might have had on their final forms. The book incorporates contemporary commentaries, recent archeological evidence from kiln sites and the most up-to-date scientific analysis.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49537073119505,"sku":"GOR004178154","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50799449866513,"sku":"GOR006270424","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714114707.jpg?v=1751295606"},{"product_id":"pu-quan-and-his-generation-book-sj-vainker-9781854442048","title":"Pu Quan and His Generation","description":"Pu Songchuang (1913-1991) was born into the last generation of the Qing imperial family, a cousin of the last emperor Pu Yi. An exhibition of his work was held Oxford from December 2004 to March 2005 and included paintings from all periods of his career, documenting a change in style from traditional gongbi birds and flowers, to sweeping landscapes in ink. Some early paintings are executed on Ming dynasty silk from the imperial treasury, while several of the later landscapes in ink on paper depict scenery from the route of the Long March, which Pu travelled in 1956 with a group of artists as part of the celebrations of the anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army. The paintings came from the collections of the artist's family in Hong Kong, and from a private collection in Oxford and were displayed here in public for the first time. Most have never before been published.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49613889470737,"sku":"GOR006955085","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/185444204X.jpg?v=1751154746"},{"product_id":"modern-chinese-painting-book-sj-vainker-9781854440792","title":"Modern Chinese Painting","description":"The Reyes Collection of modern Chinese paintings covers the period from the middle of the 19th century until late 1995 when the collection was presented to the Ashmolean Museum. Artistically this period includes paintings which seek to update the tradition, as well as works embodying a response to Japanese or to Western art and works which reflect international art movements of the late 20th century. Politically it is a period that began under the Qing dynasty, which witnessed the founding of the Republic in 1911 and the establishment in 1949 of the People's Republic of China; it was also a period punctuated by unrest in the form of widescale rebellion, the Sino-Japanese (1937-45) war, civil war and, most recently, the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). The plurality of artistic styles that arose in these circumstances, together with the ongoing tension between China's illustrious past and international present, has precluded the decisive formulation of a mainstream in Chinese painting; the Reyes collection, in representing the conservative as well as the innovative painters of each generation, is in keeping with most major collections, public and private, in this field.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50467685007633,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50467687104785,"sku":"GOR001835218","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53259364860177,"sku":"GOR006260672","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1854440799.jpg?v=1751123750"},{"product_id":"chinese-pottery-and-porcelain-book-sj-vainker-9780714114484","title":"Chinese Pottery and Porcelain","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50474463297809,"sku":"GOR013964341","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51412468957457,"sku":"GOR005223564","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53631110185233,"sku":"GOR007104449","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714114480.jpg?v=1750913119"},{"product_id":"chinese-paintings-in-the-ashmolean-museum-book-sj-vainker-9781854441454","title":"Chinese Paintings in the Ashmolean Museum","description":"The Ashmolean Museum's Department of Eastern Art houses a collection of Chinese paintings that has been built up since the 1950s to complement the University's substantial holdings of Chinese bronzes, ceramics and decorative arts. The paintings include several works by early Qing (1644--1911) dynasty artists but its strength lies in the late Qing and twentieth-century paintings, which constitute one of the foremost collections of their type in Europe. This catalogue presents more than two hundred major works, from seventeenth century landscapes, through landscape and figure paintings by modern masters such as Ren Yi, Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, Huang Binhong and Fu Baoshi, to recent work by contemporary artists, with inscriptions fully reproduced in Chinese characters, and an extensive bibliography.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52956324954385,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52956325052689,"sku":"GOR006328203","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781854441454.jpg?v=1766145257"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-sj-vainker.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
