Van Gogh and the Seasons is the first book to explore this central aspect of van Gogh's life and work.  Van Gogh often linked the seasons to rural life and labor as men and women worked the land throughout the year. From his depictions of peasants and sowers to winter gardens, riverbanks, orchards, and harvests, he painted scenes that richly evoke the sensory pleasures and deprivations particular to each season. This stunning book brings to life the locales that defined his tumultuous career, from Arles, where he experienced his most crucial period of creativity, to Auvers-sur-Oise, where he committed suicide. It looks at van Gogh's interpretation of nature, the religious implications of the seasons in his time, and how his art was perceived against the backdrop of various symbolist factions, antimaterialist debates, and esoteric beliefs in fin de siècle Paris. The book also features revealing extracts from the artist's correspondence and artworks from his own collection that provide essential context to the themes in his work.  Breathtakingly illustrated and featuring informative essays by Sjraar van Heugten, Joan Greer, and Ted Gott, Van Gogh and the Seasons shines new light on the extraordinary creative vision of one of the world's most beloved artists.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49731366682897,"sku":"NGR9780691179711","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50355981254929,"sku":"CIN0691179719A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50360630149393,"sku":"CIN0691179719G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51005715087633,"sku":"NIN9780691179711","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0691179719.jpg?v=1750847972"},{"product_id":"van-gogh-the-master-draughtsman-book-sjraar-van-heugten-9780500238257","title":"Van Gogh:The Master Draughtsman","description":"Published to accompany the major exhibition at The Van Gogh Museum, this lavish volume is the first to trace Vincent Van Gogh's decade-long achievement as a draughtsman. The exhibition runs from 21 September 2019 to 12 January 2020, Her Noordbrabants Museum, Den Bosch, The Netherlands- Features works never previously exhibited as well as popular masterpieces- Challenges the accepted image of Van Gogh as a tormented, solitary artistA groundbreaking new exhibition will be presented by the Het Noordbrabants Museum, focusing on the impact of Van Gogh's interpersonal relationships on his work. Part biography, part art history, the catalog of this exhibition will dismantle the commonly-held conception that Van Gogh's genius stemmed from his mental illness and isolation. Revealing a complex, emotionally engaging picture of the man behind some of the most celebrated works in history, this catalogue includes well-known works and pieces from private collections, as well as rare documents virtually unknown to the public, such as a never-before exhibited sketchbook that Vincent gifted to Betsy Tersteeg, daughter of an art dealer at The Hague; poetry he sent to his dear brother and confidante Theo; and six rarely featured letters of condolence received by Theo after Vincent's death. Masterpieces include Still life with Bible (1885), Madame Roulin Rocking the Cradle (La berceuse) 1889, and L'Arl sienne (Madame Ginoux) (1890). The catalogue also contains numerous less well-known portraits of family and friends, revealing how they appeared through the artist's eyes. Van Gogh's Inner Circle sheds light on Vincent's often tempestuous personality, his love affairs, his eventual estrangement from many of his colleagues, and how his relationships influenced the work he produced in the years leading up to his premature death.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50400100614417,"sku":"CIN1788840437G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51098756317457,"sku":"GOR014175834","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51350635806993,"sku":"GOR014234097","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52687907881233,"sku":"NLS9781788840439","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1788840437.jpg?v=1751313117"},{"product_id":"van-gogh-in-provence-modernizing-tradition-book-sjraar-van-heugten-9782330063023","title":"Van Gogh in Provence:Modernizing Tradition","description":"Van Gogh in Provence: Modernizing Tradition is the third part of a trilogy initiated by the inauguration of the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh in Arles. Right from the start, the simple life, people and landscapes stand at the centre of Vincent's artistic vision and his inimitable expressive will. However, the first years of his career in Holland were above all influenced by the painters of the Barbizon and Hague schools, whose grey and gloomy palettes he emulated. It was only when he moved to Paris in early 1886 that his work began to gradually change. In the capital he studied the works of Delacroix – his favourite artist – but also old masters, impressionists and the avant-garde of the era. Van Gogh also drew inspiration from Japanese art, especially highly coloured engravings on wood that he started collecting. His palette gradually took on more colour under the influence of the chromatic theories he had already met in Holland, the meaning of which he now understood. In February 1888 Van Gogh set out for Arles, where he lived until early May 1889. Here his talent as a colourist flourished. The artist was fascinated by the light of the south and the intensity of colour he observed there. He combined all the sources of inspiration he had drew upon in Paris to create a very personal and expressive modern style. Following in Delacroix’s footsteps, while drawing on Japanese art, he started using stark chromatic contrast along with a very dynamic brushstroke. Van Gogh hoped to form an artists’ community in Provence and Paul Gauguin joined him in Arles late October 1888. The pair worked together and influenced each other, but in late December their incompatible characters led to confrontation. Gauguin left, and Van Gogh’s dream of an artist’s community was shattered. Mental illness led him to the asylum of Saint-Rémy, where he developed a less contrasting style. His work ceased to express the radiant colours and light of the south that he had found in Arles.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51064988074257,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51064993120529,"sku":"NIN9782330031145","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52511857213713,"sku":"CIN2330031149VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53559729160465,"sku":"GOR011572855","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53561060720913,"sku":"GOR008078599","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/2330031149.jpg?v=1751415354"},{"product_id":"van-gogh-drawings-book-sjraar-van-heugten-9782330052546","title":"Van Gogh Drawings","description":"Vincent van Gogh started his artistic career by concentrating on drawing. Convinced that this was the foundation he needed to become a painter, he did little else for the first three years of his career. Consequently, he was a talented draughtsman long before he became an experienced painter. Drawing would always be an important part of his artistic activities, and his outstanding mastery makes this part of his production an equal counterpart to his paintings. This book considers the influences of prints and drawings by other artists on Van Gogh's drawings and his small graphic oeuvre. Besides a representative choice from Van Gogh's work in some 35-40 drawings and prints, a range of works will be shown that inspired his early and his late work: prints from illustrated magazines and 19th century prints which he collected and which strongly influenced his early work; replica's of 17th century prints, Japanese prints and other works which led to his remarkable drawings with the reed pen in Provence. Van Gogh absorbed a multitude of influences, but merged all that in works that are highly innovative, in style but quite often also in technique. The exhibition and the accompanying publication will pay close attention to those and other aspects of one of the most remarkable drawn oeuvres of the 19th century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51066259112209,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51066261864721,"sku":"NIN9782330052546","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/2330052545.jpg?v=1750999331"},{"product_id":"van-gogh-book-sjraar-van-heugten-9780810958487","title":"Van Gogh","description":"Vincent Van Gogh may be one of the best-loved artists in the world today. A prolific artist, he produced hundreds of paintings and drawings in a career lasting a mere ten years - the last ten years of his life.  The largest and most representative collection in the world of Van Gogh's work once belonged to the Van Gogh family, and is now held at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The collection comprises some 200 paintings and 500 drawings, as well as sketchbooks and over 700 letters.  This complete catalogue of the collection, to be published in seven volumes, has been meticulously compiled and reflects the most up-to-date research on the artist. Four volumes are devoted to the drawings, and three to the paintings.  Vincent Van Gogh Drawings Volume 1: The early years 1880-83 concentrates on the early drawings of Van Gogh, as he embarked upon his professional career as an artist in 1880. It includes sixty-eight drawings reproduced in full-colour, an in-depth analysis of each drawing, and full catalogue details on all works. The series of volumes thus constitutes a complete reference guide to the work of Vincent Van Gogh, and represents the most important recent contribution to studies on the artist.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51700550238481,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51700550467857,"sku":"GOR013306209","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53522896847121,"sku":"NLS9780853317210","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853317216.jpg?v=1751446288"},{"product_id":"van-gogh-tekenaar-book-sjraar-van-heugten-9789061535966","title":"Van Gogh tekenaar","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51850148217105,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51850148315409,"sku":"GOR014427109","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789061535966.jpg?v=1753542622"},{"product_id":"fernand-leger-and-the-rooftops-of-paris-book-sjraar-van-heugten-9789490880408","title":"Fernand Leger and the Rooftops of Paris","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52668756918545,"sku":"NLS9789490880408","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53675640914193,"sku":"GOR014997791","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789490880408.jpg?v=1762285849"},{"product_id":"van-gogh-paintings-volume-2-book-sjraar-van-heugten-9780853317234","title":"Van Gogh Paintings Volume 2","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53522879119633,"sku":"NLS9780853317234","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780853317234.jpg?v=1778460182"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-sjraar-van-heugten.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
