Struck by a bomb, the battleship started to sink, and Young and others became trapped when it overturned. Young describes their terrifying experience with stunning clarity. He recounts the violence of the capsizing, which killed or injured many of the men, and the survivors' frantic search for an escape route. He remembers their horror at finding all the exits blocked and their despair over the possibility of never being rescued. This account of their experience is undeniably one of the most dramatic stories to unfold during the air raid. With incredible realism, Young describes the water's inexorable rise, inch by awful inch; the sickening taste of fuel oil; the foul smell of the air; the nervous wisecracks echoing through the cold darkness; and finally the silence. The intensity and suspense rival that of any fictional thriller--the recounting of his escape is particularly spellbinding. To place his experiences in a broader context, Young also provides little-known tales of tragedy and bravery that occurred elsewhere on that Day of Infamy. First published in hardcover in 1991 to wide acclaim, this memorable story remains popular today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50381498155281,"sku":"CIN1557509921G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50977777320209,"sku":"GOR008628630","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50986263511313,"sku":"CIN1557509921VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":52981147336977,"sku":"CIN1557509921A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1557509921.jpg?v=1751340867"},{"product_id":"road-to-moral-capitalism-book-stephen-b-young-9781941768891","title":"The Road to Moral Capitalism","description":"The book exposes several core fallacies holding up modern financial free-market orthodoxy and which contributed to the recurrent failures of banking and finance to sustain healthy economic growth for all. The book argues that: 1) It is wrong to oppose public goods to private goods, with public goods consigned to governments for distribution and private goods left to allegedly only self-serving free markets. Some notional public goods - education, social services, transportation, etc. - can be effectively sourced and delivered by markets. And, to the contrary, some private goods affect the public interest and so draw upon themselves aspects of public goods. There is a continuum of goods and services ranging from pure public goods to pure private goods, with intermediate goods of a mixed character. Quasi-public goods and quasi-private goods can be provided by private enterprise through open market transactions. These are shared value goods and services. Financial intermediation is such a mixed public and private good. 2) Corporate social responsibility performs a mediation function between private goods and services provided by the firm and public goods demanded by society. 3) A limited theory of valuation - which ignores intangible assets and liabilities - caused the asset bubble and resulting collapse of leverage in the fall of 2008. A better theory of valuation is proposed to add public good dimensions to the calculation of private asset values. 4) The existence of an agency problem in finance and corporate governance is challenged. Current agency theory presumes that markets are incapable of providing public goods. The assumed agency problem supports companies ignoring stakeholders, externalities and fiduciary duties of responsibility. 5) Anxiety and money exacerbate the selfishness which brings the agency problem to the fore, but they can be offset by enhancing the strength of the moral sense, which is part of each person's social-psychology. The severity of the agency problem is rejected by value-based cultures - Catholic social teachings, Buddhism, Chinese ethics, Taoism, Aristotle and Qur'an. In addition, I\/Thou relationships and friendships sustain values to overcome the agency problem. 6) Financial institutions need to be incentivized to provide public goods in addition to private goods. 7) Wall Street may be more about rent-extraction than investing in real growth. In much of finance, contract rights - shares, bonds, loan participations, derivatives, etc. - are only rented for a short time in order to flip them for a higher price. Why, then, should traders be given all the respect due to owners who invest for the long-term? 8) The US Dodd-Frank reforms did not challenge the inherent dysfunction in financial trading, but only sought to distance public coffers from responsibility for making good on private losses. 9) It is self-restraint - the moral sense as provided to each of us by Natural Law - which can align private goods with public good and so lead us to a moral capitalism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51126131228945,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51126131687697,"sku":"NIN9781941768891","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/194176889X.jpg?v=1750770372"},{"product_id":"kissinger-s-betrayal-how-america-lost-the-vietnam-war-book-stephen-b-young-9781637553596","title":"Kissinger's Betrayal: How America Lost the Vietnam War","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51547397325073,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51547397357841,"sku":"NIN9781637553596","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1637553595.jpg?v=1751343462"},{"product_id":"theory-and-practice-of-associative-power-book-stephen-b-young-9780761868996","title":"The Theory and Practice of Associative Power","description":"To succeed in achieving its national security objectives the United States needs to use Associative Power in place of both Hard Power and Soft Power. Associative Power is the use of joint ventures and alliances to optimize the forms of power brought to bear in conflicts responding with precision to a spectrum of enemy threats, situational challenges, and political opportunities. Associative Power was wisely and successfully used by the United States in the Vietnam War through the CORDS program of counter insurgency and village development to defeat the Viet Cong insurgency and permit the withdrawal of American combat forces. Associative power was not used by the United States--nor was the best counter insurgency practices of CORDS--in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. As a result of this omission, interim outcomes in Iraq and Afghanistan did not acceptably accomplish American objectives.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52336916365585,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52336916955409,"sku":"NLS9780761868996","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780761868996.jpg?v=1758164932"},{"product_id":"adam-smith-and-modern-economics-book-stephen-b-young-9783111575384","title":"Adam Smith and Modern Economics","description":"For more than two centuries, economists and researchers have struggled with the conundrum of reconciling Adam Smith's views on economics and ethics. While some held that Smith's capitalism and free markets institutionalized selfishness, greed, inequality and injustice, others focused on his theory of the moral nature of all human persons and the application of conscience and self-restraint in capitalist activities. Adam Smith and Modern Economics suggests that neither of these two conventional understandings alone is accurate and conducive to human flourishing. Smith put markets in the context of morality, observing that markets serve best when our moral sentiments are followed. In a remarkable convergence of inductive thinking, the contributors to this book set a new standard of scholarship and insight for our understanding of Adam Smith's contributions as a master of political economy, where politics brings forth decision-making about priorities and values. The contributions integrate morals, values, and the universal intangible capitals of sociality and human resourcefulness with the more materialistic side of economic activity to advocate a system seeking equilibrium. They posit that when ethics and economics are integrated, wealth can be created for the good of all. Commemorating the 250th anniversary of Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations, this new and sympathetic understanding of Smith's intentions and accomplishment is essential reading for academics and students of economics, politicians and bureaucrats, public policy planners, social justice activists, executives, and professionals.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53445407310097,"sku":"NIN9783111575384","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53606344950033,"sku":"NGR9783111575384","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783111575384.jpg?v=1776774421"},{"product_id":"america-vs-the-overclass-how-a-new-elite-corrupted-our-nation-and-what-we-can-do-book-stephen-b-young-9798891384682","title":"America vs. the Overclass: How a New Elite Corrupted Our Nation and What We Can Do to Stop Them","description":"Perfect Bound.
