Such flows seem to pressurize, breach and sometimes even disaggregate the places we always imagined to be distinctive and stable. This book is focussed on the interaction of two elements within this contemporary situation. The first is the very idea of a place we imagine to be distinctive and stable. This idea is explored through architecture, the institution that in the West has claimed the responsibility for imagining and producing places along these lines. The second element is a particular kind of global flow, namely the human flows of immigrants, refugees, exiles, guestworkers and other migrant groups. This book carefully inspects the intersections between architectures of place and flows of migrancy. It does so without seeking to defend the idea of place, nor lament its passing. Rather this book is an exploration of the often complex and unorthodox modes of dwelling that are emerging precisely from within the ruins of the idea of place. This exploration is informed by critical analyses of architecture and urbanism, and their representation in media such as film.  The book is animated empirically by a set of overlapping and intersecting trajectories that shift from Hong Kong to Canada, Australia and Germany; from Southern Europe to Australia; from Britain to India, Canada and New Zealand; from Southeast Asia, to the Pacific Islands, to New Zealand; and from Latin America and East Asia to the United States. But each geographical context discussed represents only one point within a wider pattern of movement that implicates other localities, and so signals the very undoing of a unified geographical logic.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49575530987793,"sku":"GOR010608417","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0415283612.jpg?v=1751165826"},{"product_id":"future-cities-laboratory-book-stephen-cairns-9783037785997","title":"Future Cities Laboratory","description":"This second volume in the Future Cities Laboratory Indicia series focuses on the tools, methods, and approaches needed for urban research.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49734848250129,"sku":"NGR9783037785997","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51061695611153,"sku":"NIN9783037785997","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3037785993.jpg?v=1751465597"},{"product_id":"future-cities-laboratory-book-stephen-cairns-9783037785454","title":"Future Cities Laboratory","description":"This book, the  rst in a planned series, reports on the Future Cities Laboratory and its ambitious mission to shape sustainable future cities through science, by design, in place. It offers a global perspective on cities from the vantage point of Asia, where the laboratory is based. This view has particular signi cance today as the fortunes of Asia, the world's most populous and rapidly urbanising continent, will also delineate the prospects of the planet.The series as a whole will assemble the necessary indicia-indications, clues, evidence-on how cities grow and  ourish, produce and innovate, consume and waste, threaten and destroy, to form practical strategies for future city making. The  rst volume in the series focuses on the challenges that future cities pose to sustainability. The second will concentrate on the innovative approaches necessary for addressing those challenges. The third will present concrete scenarios and action plans that emerge from such approaches.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50100760740113,"sku":"CIN3037785454G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51172058824977,"sku":"GOR014192177","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52761138331921,"sku":"NIN9783037785454","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3037785454.jpg?v=1751465282"},{"product_id":"future-cities-laboratory-book-stephen-cairns-9783037786598","title":"Future Cities Laboratory","description":"This third and final volume in the Indicia book series presents the results of the Future Cities Laboratory research program in the form of “actions” for sustainable city-making. It complements the first and second volumes of the series that respec- tively documented the research challenges and approaches that prefigured these results. Read together, the three volumes chart the full arc and many productive eddies of the five-year programme and its mission to shape sustainable future cities. Research results are presented as condensed actions that take the form of general principles, recommendations, practical guidelines, and rules of thumb. The actions are neither technical standards nor prescriptive check-lists but invitations to explore, test and refine research insights within the context in which the reader lives, works and acts. The credibility, salience and legitimacy of each action is underpinned by scientific publications (journal articles, books and exhibitions) presented in extensive footnotes and suggestions for further reading.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51060943487249,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51060945944849,"sku":"NIN9783037786598","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3037786590.jpg?v=1751465392"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-stephen-cairns.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
