His practice is an obsessive, physical enquiry into the traditions of sculpture, rethinking conventional sculptural methods and materials. Nothing is as it first appears; crudely modelled clay is meticulously cast in resin but, with the inclusion of marble dust, it could have been either carved and polished from a block of stone or fashioned from a piece of chewing gum. He collects, he dismembers, he puts things back together in fragments, or leaves pieces in an unfinished state - or just leaves them in pieces. He is a Surrealist de nos jours. At the same time, there is always a tender acknowledgment of the twentieth-century modernist canon of sculpture, and of the fragile heroism inherent in the handmade object. Alongside this sculptural work, textiles have also become a particularly potent aspect of his practice. While time-consuming, his embroidering looks spontaneous, like a hastily handwritten scrawl. His cross-stitch is self-taught and has a distinctly amateur and cartoonish appearance; raw edges and wonky lines of text give his own samplers a homespun quality.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e In this compelling book, Hughes leads the reader through the passages of his creative mind, offering a commentary on his most significant works. Texts by Stephen Feeke, Harry Thorne and Bruce Haines respond to particular aspects of the practice. The result is the first comprehensive monograph on the quiet revolutionary at the heart of contemporary sculpture.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49584687841553,"sku":"GOR013537537","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50490729431313,"sku":"GOR012916103","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51056829432081,"sku":"NIN9781908970435","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/190897043X.jpg?v=1750725943"},{"product_id":"barbara-hepworth-strings-book-stephen-feeke-9781901192667","title":"Barbara Hepworth: Strings","description":"Barbara Hepworth: Strings is the first publication dedicated to the artist’s stringed sculptures, paintings and drawings. In 1939, Hepworth (1903–1975) made her first sculpture threaded with strings. For the rest of her career, she intermittently combined string with works made from plaster, wood, metal and stone. These were some of her most personally distinctive artistic achievements. Coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of the artist’s death, Barbara Hepworth: Strings provides for the first time a comprehensive thematic account of string in the artist’s work, exploring the different ways that she used it and the symbolism she invested it with.  This publication includes a fully-illustrated catalogue of Piano Nobile’s accompanying exhibition. It features essays by some of the leading specialists on Hepworth’s work. The exhibition co-curator Michael Regan offers a personal response to the stringed sculptures and considers their affective quality. In his essay, Dr Stephen Feeke explores fresh perspectives and previously unpublished source materials relating to Hepworth and string. A further text by Eleanor Clayton, senior curator at The Hepworth Wakefield, gives a close reading of the most significant stringed works including the artist’s celebrated commission for John Lewis’s flagship store on Oxford Street. The book also includes a comprehensive, illustrated list of Hepworth’s stringed sculptures.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51522454323473,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51522454454545,"sku":"GOR014314862","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51610353467665,"sku":"NGR9781901192667","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1901192660.jpg?v=1751028029"},{"product_id":"barbara-hepworth-within-the-landscape-abbot-hal-book-sophie-bowness-9781906043155","title":"Barbara Hepworth : Within the Landscape: Abbot Hal","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53374547460369,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53374547558673,"sku":"GOR006967695","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781906043155.jpg?v=1775224325"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-stephen-feeke.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
