Rugby was one of the sports that benefitted from this burst of energy and Canterbury was one of the hundreds of clubs that emerged nationwide.    Steve Uglow explores the origins of the city club, the backgrounds of its founding members, its struggle to find a ground but also how it interacted with the social and economic milieu of Canterbury. With Kent on the front line during the Second World War and with Canterbury suffering severe bomb damage, the club only just survives but their matches provide some relief for soldiers and civilians alike.    In the 1950s and 1960s, the wholly amateur club fought to establish its sporting credentials in the county but developed through some powerful and charismatic captains, until in the 1970s, it became county champions for the first time. In the modern era it would emerge as one of the top clubs in England and will reach its centenary in 2029.   At the same time, the club slowly shed some of rugby’s reputation for poor behaviour and as a drinking club for young men, reaching out to the wider community through an enlightened youth policy and the development of women’s rugby. This book deals with the first 50 years of the club’s history, a period which laid down the roots of the diverse and vibrant club that it is today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49578402447633,"sku":"GOR013647556","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1800465602.jpg?v=1750802088"},{"product_id":"policing-liberal-society-book-steve-uglow-9780192892188","title":"Policing Liberal Society","description":"The author outlines the historical development of the police force, analyzes their established role, the ways in which it has changed and the prospects for the future. He argues that the capacity of the police to reduce crime-rates is inevitably marginal, pointing to the fact that the public not only discover and report the majority of offences, but also provide the solutions. The police have an undefined and complex relationship with the law, the State and the community. The obscurity of their tasks and range of powers not only makes their job a very difficult one but also renders the whole police institution vulnerable to authoritarianism. The author suggests that we should concern ourselves with the formal constitutional status of the force, protecting its independence and extending its accountability.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49608386052369,"sku":"GOR004717739","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50471043924241,"sku":"GOR003857906","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0192892185.jpg?v=1751037306"},{"product_id":"evidence-text-and-materials-book-steve-uglow-9780421925106","title":"Evidence Text and Materials","description":"This book provides students with essential guidance on what is a conceptually difficult topic. It draws together essential cases, statutes and practical readings on civil and criminal evidence, linked by an extensive interpretative commentary. It provides a firm grounding in the rules of evidence and the relationship between evidence and procedure, placing that relationship, wherever possible, in the broader context of the criminal and civil justice systems. It explores the connection between the rules of evidence and the nature of the common law adversarial trial with its stress on oral testimony, day in court and the examination of witnesses.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49643187339537,"sku":"GOR002643600","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0421925108.jpg?v=1751197140"},{"product_id":"seatoller-history-of-a-hamlet-book-steve-uglow-9781912181704","title":"Seatoller:  History of a Hamlet","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51865673269521,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51865673302289,"sku":"GOR014435349","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781912181704.jpg?v=1753994748"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-steve-uglow.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
