Our understanding of its culture has thus come from a world created by and for sultans, viziers and the elite of the Empire. But what of the world of the craftsmen and tradesmen who produced the monuments and artefacts? Or the townspeople who prayed in the mosques, drank water from the sebils or passed by the mausolea in the ordinary course of their lives? How did they live and die? To date no book has adequately explored the day-to-day life of the common people during the centuries of Ottoman rule. This pioneering book concentrates on the pilgrimage in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when Mecca was ruled by the Ottoman sultans. At a time when, for the majority of the faithful, the journey was long, arduous and fraught with danger, the provision of food, water, shelter and protection for pilgrims presented a major challenge to the provincial governors of the vast Ottoman Empire. Drawing on rich documentation left by Ottoman administrators and on the accounts of contemporary pilgrims, Suraiya Faroqhi here sheds new light on the trials and experiences of everyday life for those undertaking the hajj.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50406359302417,"sku":"GOR011094309","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1780767714.jpg?v=1751153486"},{"product_id":"economic-and-social-history-of-the-ottoman-empire-book-donald-quataert-9780521574556","title":"An Economic and Social History of the Ottoman Empire","description":"This major contribution to Ottoman history is now published in paperback in two volumes: the original single hardback volume (1994) has been widely acclaimed as a landmark in the study of one of the most enduring and influential empires of modern times. The authors provide a richly detailed account of the social and economic history of the Ottoman region, from the origins of the Empire around 1300 to the eve of its destruction during World War One. The breadth of range and the fullness of coverage make these two volumes essential for an understanding of contemporary developments in both the Middle East and the post-Soviet Balkan world. The text of volume one is by Halil Inalcik, covering the period 1300-1600. The second volume, written by Suraiya Faroqhi, Bruce McGowan, Donald Quataert and Sevket Pamuk, continues the story to 1914. Each volume examines developments in population, trade, transport, manufacturing, land tenure and the economy, and extensive apparatus and bibliographic information is provided for students and others wishing to pursue the subject in more detail. Both volumes will be fundamental to any future discussion of any aspect of Ottoman history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50649485017361,"sku":"GOR005454849","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51003159970065,"sku":"NIN9780521574556","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52334428553489,"sku":"NLS9780521574556","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53619331760401,"sku":"GOR014984258","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B006Z2NUFO.jpg?v=1751230083"},{"product_id":"ottoman-empire-and-the-world-around-it-book-suraiya-faroqhi-9781850437154","title":"The Ottoman Empire and the World Around it","description":"In Islamic law the world was made up of the House of Islam and the House of War with the Ottoman Sultan - the perceived successor to the Caliphs - supreme ruler of the Islamic world. In Surviving Istanbul, Suraiya Faroqhi takes the reader to seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Istanbul, with occasional forays into earlier and later periods, focusing in particular on the city’s ordinary inhabitants. From the foods eaten and the streets traversed, to the miseries endured because of recurring fires, Surviving Istanbul illustrates a city of immigrants, slaves, artisans, and rural dwellers supplying the urban markets, with all the struggles that living in (and around) the city entailed. At the same time, Faroqhi shows, the city’s relatively young population also found ways to have fun, such as celebrating at public festivals or taking a swim in a river emptying into the Bosporus. Drawing on archival and narrative sources, with particular reliance on the impressions of Evliya Çelebi (1611–about 1685), this book offers a mosaic of daily life in premodern Istanbul.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51201729921297,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51201731232017,"sku":"NGR9786258022407","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/6258022405.jpg?v=1757417433"},{"product_id":"approaching-ottoman-history-book-suraiya-faroqhi-9780521661683","title":"Approaching Ottoman History","description":"Suraiya Faroqhi's scholarly contribution to the field of Ottoman history has been prodigious. As house ownership was widespread, data concerning value, description, location and ownership of dwellings constitute a valid manner of approaching urban society as a whole. Through her use of documents from the kadi registers of Ankara and Kayseri, Dr Faroqui follows changes in patterns of house ownership over approximately a century. The urban society thus revealed differs from the patterns generally associated with the 'Islamic city' model. Townsmen often bought real estate without selecting a quarter inhabited by their co-religionists, which throws light on the Muslim majority's attitude to the Christian minority. However examples of wealthy and poor quarters were not known. The kadi registers also indicate that despite passing through a period of crisis early in the century, both cultures managed a fairly rapid recovery from this.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52403442483473,"sku":"NLS9780521522557","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52735430820113,"sku":"NIN9780521522557","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780521522557.jpg?v=1758760947"},{"product_id":"ottoman-empire-book-suraiya-faroqhi-9781558764484","title":"The Ottoman Empire","description":"At its height, the Ottoman Empire spread over three continents and matched the size of the Roman Empire, covering the territories of modern day Turkey, Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, and parts of Greece. This was a period of relative stability when trade between the empire and Europe flourished and, wartime apart, merchants and pilgrims travelled in relative security. However, despite the emphasis on the sultan's role as defender of the faithful and of social order, tensions did exist between the ruling elite in Istanbul and their provincial subjects. This theme is central to the volume. Other sections focus on religious and political groups, women, trade, rural life and, importantly, music, art and architecture. According to this view, only soldiers and members of the governing elite would have been free to travel. However, Suraiya Faroqhi's extensive archival research shows that this was not the case; pious men from all walks of life went on pilgrimage to Mecca, slaves fled from their masters and craftspeople travelled in search of work. Most travellers in the Ottoman era headed for Istanbul in search of better prospects and even in peacetime the Ottoman administration recruited artisans to repair fortresses and sent them far away from their home towns. In this book, Suraiya Faroqhi provides a revisionist study of those artisans who chose - or were obliged - to travel and those who stayed predominantly in their home localities. She considers the occasions and conditions which triggered travel among the artisans, and the knowledge that they had of the capital as a spatial entity. She shows that even those craftsmen who did not travel extensively had some level of mobility and that the Ottoman sultans and viziers, who spent so much effort in attempting to control the movements of their subjects, could often only do so within very narrow limits. Challenging existing historiography and providing an important new revisionist perspective, this book will be essential reading for students and scholars of Ottoman history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52668146581777,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52668147433745,"sku":"NLS9781780764818","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781780764818.jpg?v=1762284295"},{"product_id":"women-in-the-ottoman-empire-book-suraiya-faroqhi-9780755638253","title":"Women in the Ottoman Empire","description":"It is an often ignored but fundamental fact that in the Ottoman world, as in most empires, there were ‘first-class’ and ‘second class’ subjects.
