They laughed and joked pretty much This year, the city of Edmonton reported that they had spent two point two million dollars on a terrorism plan. Unfortunately, the Bus Depot didn't get a photo copy of the plan. Perhaps some of the two point two million could have been spent on a bull horn to order passengers around, pay someone to check on the comfort of the passengers, or provide a couple of folding chairs for said passengers. Money could be spent to arrange with the Pub for shelter, or at least buy a tarp to protect us from the weather. One of the primary agendas of this collection is to promote the non-canonical Loathly Ladies as worthwhile subjects for scholarly consideration. The examinations here of the medieval English Loathly Lady tales engage with a myriad of concerns, including anxieties about virginity and sex, power and assimilation, beauty and beastliness. In the UK, funding for two weeks annual training in transferable skills for each doctoral scholarship recipient has caused an explosion of such teaching, which is now flourishing elsewhere too; for example, endorsed by the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate in the USA and developed extensively in Australia. These raise a number of questions: How is generic support funded and situated within institutions? Should some sessions be compulsory for doctoral students? Where do the boundaries lie between what can be taught generically or left to supervisors as discipline-specific? To what extent is generic work pastoral? What are its main benefits? Its challenges?
