There are, for example,  essays on the Society's pioneering role in recording monuments  and antiquities for posterity, in establishing the scientific and  empirical basis of archaeological studies, in replacing  Biblically based timeframes with a clearer understanding of deep  time measured in millions of years, in drawing up the first  legislation protecting ancient monuments, and in funding and publishing the great excavations of the last one hundred years,  from Stonehenge, Maiden Castle, Richborough and Sutton Hoo to  Aksum (Ethiopia) and Mons Porphyrites (Egypt). All the papers  represent fresh and original scholarship and they tell us much  about the Society's achievements (and some of the accompanying  conflicts between personalities and ideas) over three hundred  years. They are based on diaries, letters, minute books and confidential government papers and on portraits that chart the  changing image of the antiquary from a figure of fun to heroic  seeker of forgotten people and civilizations.  Visions of Antiquity  reveals astonishing echoes across time - from the repeated and continuing attempts to record all ancient buildings  and monuments to the continuity of the title 'antiquary' to  describe scholars who build bridges between different branches of  knowledge based on the study of material remains of the past and  of a Fellowship whose numbers have included prime ministers, bishops, peers and parliamentarians, as well as radicals and free thinkers, such as William Morris and many of the founders of  modern conservation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49578021323025,"sku":"GOR012923222","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50594424717585,"sku":"GOR014009644","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51288320475409,"sku":"GOR014218001","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0854312870.jpg?v=1751423421"},{"product_id":"interpreting-objects-and-collections-book-susan-pearce-9780415112895","title":"Interpreting Objects and Collections","description":"This volume brings together for the first time the most significant papers on the interpretation of objects and collections and examines how people relate to material culture and why they collect things. Susan M. Pearce probes the psychological and social reasons that people collect and identifies three modes of collecting: collecting as souvenirs, as fetishes, and as systematic assemblages. She considers how museum professionals set policies of collection management; acquire, study, and exhibit objects; and make meaning of the objects in their care. Pearce also explores the ideological relationship between museums and their collections and the intellectual and social relationships of museums to the public.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50287787278609,"sku":"GOR007927986","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50472655716625,"sku":"CIN1560983302VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51334400278801,"sku":"CIN1560983302G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1560983302.jpg?v=1750958895"},{"product_id":"on-collecting-book-susan-pearce-9780415075619","title":"On Collecting","description":"On Collecting examines the nature of collecting both in Europe and among people living within the European tradition elsewhere. Cockerell (1788-1863) was one of the most significant nineteenth-century British architects and a major player in the cultural shift from the Georgian eighteenth to the Victorian nineteenth century.  Charles R. Cockerell (1788-1863) was one of the most significant nineteenth-century British architects and a major player in the cultural shift from the Georgian eighteenth to the Victorian nineteenth century. Cockerell's travelsin the eastern Mediterranean between 1810 and 1817 were the formative experience of his life. His forty letters from this period, held in the archives of the Royal Institute of British Architects and published here for the first time, give crucial day-to-day insights into his actions, thoughts and feelings in relation to the intricate histories of the re-discovery and sales of the Aegina and Bassae marbles and, equally importantly, illuminate his hugely significant work on temple architecture and sculpture in mainland Greece, the great cities of Asia Minor, and the significant temples of Sicily.    Drawing on these letters, and on some 150 unpublished letters sent by his friends while they were all in Greece and now held in the British Museum, this book elucidates what Cockerell did and why by analyzing his methods of work and their significance. It discusses Cockerell's aesthetic and conceptual development during his time abroad, particularly his influential part in the changing vision of Greek sculpture and architecture, from Winkelmann's static ideal to one rooted in dramatic tension and contextual contingency. The book unravels the emergence of Cockerell's crucial historical perspective and shows how he arrived at a new view of the ancient Greek past as made up of real lived lives, rather than just existing as a back drop to the present. By offeringa complete edition of the RIBA letters, this book fills a significant gap in our understanding of the thought and work of one of the formative spirits of nineteenth century visual historical culture. THERESA ORMROD has extensive experience in archival research, manuscript transcription and editing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52754706661649,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52754707153169,"sku":"NIN9781783272068","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781783272068.jpg?v=1763570044"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-susan-pearce.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
