Ranging from Plato's first readers, over the Church Fathers and the Platonic commentators, to Byzantine and Renaissance thinkers, the papers collected here introduce the reader to the first two millennia of the dialogue's reception history. Thirteen contributions by both junior and established scholars study the engagement with the Phaedrus by such major figures as Aristotle, Galen, Origen, Clemens of Alexandria, Plotinus, Augustine, Proclus, Psellus, Ficino, Erasmus, and many others. Together, they cover the wide range of topics discussed in the dialogue: the value of myth and allegory, religion and theology, love and beauty, the soul and its immortality, teaching and learning, metaphysics and epistemology, rhetoric and dialectic, as well as the role and the limits of writing. By placing the dialogue in this broad perspective, the volume will appeal to readers interested in the Phaedrus itself, as well as to classicists, literary theorists, and historians of philosophy, science and religion concerned with the dialogue's reception history and its main protagonists.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51243174494481,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51243176329489,"sku":"NIN9783110683639","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52355565224209,"sku":"NLS9783110683639","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3110683636.jpg?v=1751220831"},{"product_id":"ancient-readings-of-plato-s-phaedo-book-sylvain-delcomminette-9789004282179","title":"Ancient Readings of Plato's Phaedo","description":"Unlike the Phaedo itself, its reception in Antiquity remains little studied. By examining the extant commentaries, their sources, and the dialogue's presence in the reflections of ancient thinkers both inside and outside the Platonic tradition, this volume aims to reconstruct its ancient history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52616335819025,"sku":"NLS9789004282179","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52763090845969,"sku":"NIN9789004282179","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004282179.jpg?v=1768560898"},{"product_id":"le-philebe-de-platon-book-sylvain-delcomminette-9789004150263","title":"Le Le Philebe de Platon","description":"This book deals with the nature and function of the good in Plato's philosophy, by focusing on the dialogue explicitly devoted to it: the Philebus. It provides a comprehensive commentary of this difficult dialogue in which almost all the themes of Plato's philosophy are discussed or alluded to. The author shows that a scrupulous analysis and reconstruction of its argumentative progress makes it possible to discover the unity between these different topics, and argues that this unity lies in the fact that Plato develops there what he was calling for notably in the Republic, i.e. a (dialectical) science of the good (or 'agathology'). Read from this viewpoint, the Philebus appears as a dialogue of tremendous importance for the understanding of Plato's philosophy as a whole.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53742748434705,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53742748991761,"sku":"NLS9789004150263","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004150263.jpg?v=1786901387"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-sylvain-delcomminette.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
