Acceptance of homosexuality has undeniably grown, and homosexuality is increasingly seen as one form of sexuality among others.  But embedded in this liberal vision is a perspective that is more troubling.  Based on interviews with gayfriendly straight people in the liberal neighbourhoods of Park Slope in New York and the Marais in Paris, Sylvie Tissot shows that stereotypes remain and control of gays and lesbians has not disappeared. Acceptance is directed towards those who are of the same socioeconomic background, who proclaim their wish to emulate traditional norms of family life, and who do not make any other demands.  Gays must be normal but not completely so, similar and at the same time different, in order to meet the not always conscious conditions of acceptability.      Gayfriendliness has managed to dispel violence and discrimination and has accompanied the invention of less conventional lives. But, as Tissot shows, it has not yet liberated itself from the clutches of heterosexual domination which still structures our society and our ways of thinking.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49751057465617,"sku":"NGR9781509553259","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51147644731665,"sku":"NIN9781509553259","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52617375809809,"sku":"NLS9781509553259","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1509553258.jpg?v=1751242888"},{"product_id":"good-neighbors-book-sylvie-tissot-9781781687925","title":"Good Neighbors","description":"Does gentrification destroy diversity? Or does it thrive on it? Boston's  South End, a legendary working-class neighborhood with the largest  Victorian brick row house district in the United States and a celebrated  reputation for diversity, has become in recent years a flashpoint for  the problems of gentrification. It has born witness to the kind of rapid  transformation leading to pitched battles over the class and race  politics throughout the country and indeed the contemporary world.    This subtle study of a storied urban neighborhood reveals the way that  upper-middle-class newcomers have positioned themselves as champions of  diversity, and how their mobilization around this key concept has  reordered class divisions rather than abolished them.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50400215400721,"sku":"CIN1781687927A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50420918747409,"sku":"GOR006865442","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1781687927.jpg?v=1751247873"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-sylvie-tissot.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
