His work did more than Marx to make converts of the most influential political movement of modern times. He was not only the father of dialectical and historical materialism, the official philosophies of history and science in many communist countries; he was also the first Marxist historian, anthropologist, philosopher, and commentator on early Marx.  In his later years Engels developed his materialist interpretation of history, his chief intellectual legacy, which has had revolutionary effects on the arts and social sciences. Terrell Carver traces its source and its effect on the development of Marxist theory and practice, assesses its utility, and discusses the difficulties which Marxists have encountered in defending it. However, there are few books that specifically investigate masculinity\/ies in relation to world politics.    Taking a feminist-inspired understanding of gender as its starting point, the book:    • explains that gender is both an asymmetrical binary and a hierarchy;   • shows how masculinization works via ‘nested hierarchies’ of domination and subordination;   • explores the imbrication of masculinities with the nation-state and great-power politics;   • develops an understanding of the arms trade with commercial processes of militarization.   Written in an accessible style, with suggestions for further reading, this book is an invaluable resource for students and teachers applying ‘the gender lens’ to global politics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49525887107345,"sku":"GOR012603801","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49743140749585,"sku":"NGR9781529212297","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51033925681425,"sku":"NIN9781529212297","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51775712297233,"sku":"GOR014399192","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1529212294.jpg?v=1751181227"},{"product_id":"marx-book-terrell-carver-9781509518180","title":"Marx","description":"Karl Marx was the first theorist of global capitalism and remains perhaps its most trenchant critic. This clear and innovative book, from one of the leading contemporary experts on Marx's thought, gives us a fresh overview of his ideas by framing them within concepts that remain topical and alive today, from class struggle and progress to democracy and exploitation.   Taking Marx's work in his pamphleteering, journalism, speeches, correspondence and published books as central to a renewed understanding of the man and his politics, this book brings both his life experience and our contemporary political engagements vividly to life. It shows us the many ways that a nineteenth-century thinker has been made into the 'Marx' we know today, beginning with his own self-presentations before moving on to the successive different \"Marxes\" that were later constructed: an icon of communist revolution, a demonic figure in the Cold War, a 'humanist' philosopher, and a spectre haunting Occupy Wall Street.   Carver's accessible and lively book unpacks the historical, intellectual and political difficulties that make Marx sometimes difficult to read and understand, while also highlighting the distinct areas where his challenging writings speak directly to the twenty-first-century world. It will be essential reading for students and scholars throughout the social sciences and anyone interested in the contemporary legacy of his revolutionary ideas.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49552183984401,"sku":"GOR012862235","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51295915933969,"sku":"NGR9781509518180","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1509518185.jpg?v=1751438269"},{"product_id":"marx-s-social-theory-book-terrell-carver-9780192891587","title":"Marx's Social Theory","description":"Marx's 'production theory' of society and social change is unique in social science and functions as a powerful hypothesis. The nineteen critical essays in this collection are the work of scholars from Germany, USA, UK, Italy, China, India, Mexico and the Philippines. Together they present and evaluate archival material and scholarly commentary that covers epistemology, political economy, political theory, gender studies, cultural studies, political geography, philosophy of social science and sociological studies of class-conflict. Students, activists and specialists will find fresh consideration of familiar works, such as The Condition of the Working Class in England, The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State, and The Dialectics of Nature. They will also be able to explore Engels’s less familiar pamphleteering, literary criticism and political commentary through detailed contextualization andcareful analysis. Friedrich Engels for the 21st Century: Perspectives and Problems is unique in putting different intellectual and political receptions of Engels’s work into productive conversation, particularly from non-Anglophone scholars, translated here into English. Readers will appreciate why Engels has been so widely celebrated some two hundred years after his birth.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49745958076689,"sku":"NGR9783030971373","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52453735989521,"sku":"NLS9783030971373","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030971376.jpg?v=1751252390"},{"product_id":"cambridge-companion-to-marx-book-terrell-carver-9780521366946","title":"The Cambridge Companion to Marx","description":"Marx was a highly original and polymathic thinker, unhampered by disciplinary boundaries, whose intellectual influence has been enormous. Along with its companion volume, Judith Butler and Political Theory, it marks an intellectual event for political theory, with major implications for feminism, women’s studies, gender studies, cultural studies, lesbian and gay studies, queer theory and anyone with a critical interest in contemporary American ‘great power’ politics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51119170355473,"sku":"NIN9780415384421","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52144925049105,"sku":"NLS9780415384421","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0415384427.jpg?v=1751292656"},{"product_id":"michael-j-shapiro-book-terrell-carver-9780415783477","title":"Michael J. Shapiro","description":"Michael J. Shapiro’s writings have been innovatory with respect to the phenomena he has taken to be political, and the concomitant array of methods that he has brilliantly mastered. This book draws from his vast output of articles, chapters and books to provide a thematic yet integrated account of his boundary-crossing innovations in political theory and masterly contributions to our understanding of methods in the social sciences. The editors have focused on work in three key areas:  Discourse  Shapiro was one of the first theorists to demonstrate convincingly, and in a manner that has had a long-standing impact on the field, that language is not epiphenomenal to politics. Indeed, he shows that language is constitutive of politics. From his frequently-cited article on metaphor from the early 1980s to recent work on discourse and globalization, Shapiro has shown that politics happens not only with and through the use of language, but within discourse as a material practice.  Culture  Gabriel Almond and Sidney Verba’s (1963) famous work on ‘The Civic Culture’ established a long-held but ultimately counterproductive relationship between culture and politics, one in which culture is an independent variable that has effects on politics. Samuel Huntington’s (1998) (in)famous polemic, ‘The Clash of Civilizations’, only pushes this relationship to its breaking point. Shapiro’s rich and numerous writings on culture provide a powerful and important antidote to this approach, as Shapiro consistently shows (across wide-ranging contexts) that politics is in culture and culture is in politics, and no politically salient approach to culture can afford to turn either term into a causal variable.  Violence  While violence is surely not a theme foreign to political studies, no one has done more or better work in contemporary political theory to bring violence into play as a central term of political thought and to expand our understanding of violence. By reconceptualizing and reinterpreting this term, Shapiro’s work has helped us to rethink the very boundaries between political theory and international relations as putatively separate subfields of political science. And it explains why both political theorists interested in International Relations and International Relations scholars concerned with a broader understanding of international politics must both start with Shapiro’s work as required reading.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51226193101073,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51226194772241,"sku":"NIN9780415783477","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52522242670865,"sku":"NLS9780415783477","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/041578347X.jpg?v=1751391645"},{"product_id":"interpreting-the-political-book-terrell-carver-9780415131940","title":"Interpreting the Political","description":"Uses linguistic and semiotic analytical techniques to interrogate the use of language in the construction of political discourses. Feuerbach.' Part one of this revolutionary study relates in detail the political history through which these manuscripts were editorially fabricated into editions and translations, so that they could represent an important exposition of Marx's 'theory of history.' This book is the first to develop new methodological approaches to understand and analyse the use of metaphor in political science and international relations. It does this by:    Combining theory with case studies in order to advance substantive work in politics and international relations that focuses on metaphor Expands the range of empirical case studies that employ this category descriptively and also in explanatory logic Advances research that investigates the role of metaphor in empirical and discourse-based methodologies, thus building on results from other disciplines, notably linguistics and hermeneutic philosophy. In Terrell Carver’s 30th anniversary edition of his pioneering biographical study of the ‘junior partner’ – which still remains the only one to balance Engels’s pre-Marx, with-Marx, and post-Marx writings, giving a rounded view of his life and thought – Carver adopts a comparative and critical approach, neither taking the ‘perfect partnership’ as a given, nor presuming that all the intellectual fireworks were Marx’s. Engels’s famously ‘bourgeois’ class position and ‘champagne socialist’ lifestyle emerge as resolutions rather than contradictions – they provided opportunities for activist writing and politicking that would not otherwise occur. This study is driven by questions that readers might like to ask about Engels, rather than by the sheer weight of archival materials and stereotypical framing. A newly written introduction provides reflections on how politics since the 1990s has brought Marx, Engels, and Marxisms back to life, and how publication of the Marx-Engels ‘collected works’ in a definitive edition, and in English translation, have promoted interpretive innovation. Engels himself did his best to establish his own biographical narrative. This book enables readers to assess that dominating view for themselves.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52474764198161,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52474765279505,"sku":"NLS9783030492625","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030492625.jpg?v=1759841626"},{"product_id":"cambridge-companion-to-marx-book-terrell-carver-9780521366250","title":"The Cambridge Companion to Marx","description":"Marx was a highly original and polymathic thinker, unhampered by disciplinary boundaries, whose intellectual influence has been enormous. Later it took a 'political turn' in addressing issues of class and production, and the prospects for electoral socialism.  Rational Choice Marxism moves from founding classics -Erik Olin Wright's 'What is Analytical Marxism?' and Alan Carling's spirited challenge to the Marxist establishment — to the critical responses detailed by Ellen Meiksins Weod and Michael Burawoy in previously uncollected debates from New Left Review and Socialist Review. In 'Class, Production and Politics' Adam Przeworski puts rational choice methodology to work on the problem of contemporary electoral socialism. The collection contains critical response's to this from Desmond King and Mark Wickham-Jones (‘Social Democracy and Rational Choic~ Marxism'), and Michael Goldfield and Alan Gilbert ('The Limits of Rational Choice Theory'). Mark Warren writes definitively about 'Marx and Methodological Individualism', and Alan Carling tries to put rational choice Marxism and postmodern feminism into 'A More Meaningful Incomprehension'.   In their introduction the editors argue that the clarity and rigour originally promised by the rational choice Marxists were never in fact achieved, but that rational choice Marxism has considerably enhanced the theoretical treatment of class and production in a world of commodification and difference.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53023735152913,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53023736037649,"sku":"NGR9780271014630","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780271014630.jpg?v=1768562084"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-terrell-carver.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
