The most influential of these was the Confucius Sinarum Philosophus (Confucius, the Philosopher of China), published in Paris in 1687. For more than two hundred years, Western intellectuals like Leibniz and Voltaire read and meditated on the sayings of Confucius from this Latin version.  Thierry Meynard examines the intellectual background of the Jesuits in China and their thought processes in coming to understand the Confucian tradition. He presents a trilingual edition of the Lunyu, including the Chinese text, the Latin translation of the Lunyu and its commentaries, and their rendition in modern English, with notes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52137293250833,"sku":"NLS9789004289772","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52692804993297,"sku":"NIN9789004289772","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004289772.jpg?v=1768557906"},{"product_id":"analysis-and-design-of-multicell-dc-dc-converters-using-vectorized-models-book-thierry-meynard-9781848218000","title":"Analysis and Design of Multicell DC\/DC Converters Using Vectorized Models","description":"Shows how the concepts of vectorization and design masks can be used to help the designer in comparing different designs and making the right choices. This papal decision antagonised the Kangxi Emperor and devastated the Jesuit China mission. Although the Jesuits were prohibited from publicly refuting the decree, the Flemish Jesuit Francois Noel sought to defend the Jesuit position by publishing his voluminous scholarship on the Chinese classics. Among other works, in 1711 Noel published two seminal contributions to the history of Sinology: the Sinensis imperii libri classici sex or Libri sex, and the Philosophia Sinica, a sophisticated treatment of Chinese metaphysics, ritual and ethics. While the Libri sex achieved some degree of influence in the Enlightenment through the French translation of the French Jesuit historian Du Halde and the writings of the philosopher Christian Wolff, the Philosophia Sinica was actively suppressed by the Superior-General of the Jesuit order. Yet it is in this latter work where the full breadth of Noel's originality and intellectual contribution can be found. Noel reinterprets the Jesuits' position through the lens of Neo-Confucianism, integrating concepts such as li, taiji, yin and yang in his reading of Chinese philosophy. With contributions from Sinologists and intellectual historians, this book offers the first systematic study of this pioneering work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52663130095889,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52663130915089,"sku":"NLS9782503601793","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9782503601793.jpg?v=1762271215"},{"product_id":"dao-companion-to-liang-shumings-philosophy-book-thierry-meynard-9783031180019","title":"Dao Companion to Liang Shumings Philosophy","description":"This book provides an analysis of the complex philosophy of Liang Shuming. Generally considered to be a Confucian, and even the last Confucian, the author argues that he was in fact a Buddhist. Liang s thoughts are analysed within the background of the intellectual debates on religion in republican China. He reshaped the Western concept of religion from the standpoint of Yog c ra Buddhism. Yet, he advocated for the present time Confucianism as the ethical religion that would lead ultimately to the Buddhist liberation. Examining Liang s religious belief sheds new light on his fascinating life, particularly his involvement in the Rural Reconstruction movement of the nineteen-thirties. It also explains why Liang was the only intellectual who dared to publically oppose Mao in the nineteen-sixties and seventies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53516811731217,"sku":"NLS9789004171510","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004171510.jpg?v=1778286695"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-thierry-meynard.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
