In Sartor Resartus ('the tailor retailored') a fictitious editor retells the theories of an equally fictitious German professor who has come to the conclusion that human institutions and morals are only clothes to shield us from nothingness, clothes that can be changed as the whims of the age or fashion dictate. This radically deconstructive vision reveals the very highest symbols of belief for what they are - merely symbols. How to believe in anything after such an insight is a question even more acute today than it was in Carlyle's time, when he first asked it in this masterpiece of invention, parody and profound laughter. As critic of an increasingly machine-oriented and profit-driven society, he argued for moral values, respect for the individual, and a good ethical basis to society. As historian and critic he achieved enormous success as Sage of Chelsea despite his humble beginnings as the son of an Ecclefechan stonemason. It was the death of his father in 1832 which triggered the beginning of his Reminiscences, biographical essays of wonderful detail clearing out his memories under the stress of sudden bereavement. The process took much bigger form when his talented wife Jane Welsh Carlyle (1801-66) suddenly died, leaving him lonely and shattered in the realisation how much their married life had meant to him -- and filling the loneliness with this passionate, regretful and often brilliantly detailed picture of their life together over several decades. The Reminiscences show Carlyle, often a difficult author, at his most human and most approachable. As a picture of Scottish working-class life they are as illuminating as their insight into the literary and aristocratic circles in London both Carlyles occupied in the 1840s and 1850s. Their unique correspondence, now being edited in the Duke-Edinburgh edition (37 volumes to date) reveals them as the most talented letter writers of their century. Ian Campbell joined the English department of Edinburgh University in 1964, and in 2009 retired as Emeritus Professor of Scottish and Victorian Literature. He is one of the senior editors of the Duke-Edinburgh edition of the Carlyles' complete correspondence.
Sartor Resartus is Thomas Carlyle's most enduring and influential work. Harriet Martineau Thomas Carlyle was one of the most influential commentators of the nineteenth century: writer, critic, historian, biographer and brilliant correspondent, he dominated his age. Described as 'the greatest writer of his time' his Reminiscences lovingly trace three triumphs, sorrows, and achievements of his often turbulent marriage with Jane Welsh. Devastated by his wife's death, Carlyle set down his recollections of their life together with moving directness, in an account that reveals much about his own character. The Reminiscences also recall Thomas's father, James Carlyle, and his strong sense of identity growing up in Scotland. Jane Carlyle's early loves, Francis Jeffrey (editor of the Edinburgh Review) and the minister Edward Irving who was destroyed by the mockery of 'speaking with tongues', are also remembered, alongside the poets Southey and Wordsworth. Hurriedly published in 1881, the year of Carlyle's death, the Reminiscences provoked outrage for their outspokenness. The impact of Carlyle's social criticism was immediate and profound, shaping debate about the 'The Condition of England' question well into the twentieth century and beyond, and serving as the moral foundation of the welfare state. His relentlessly abrasive and illuminating critique of industrial civilization generated a vast range of response both in England, Europe, and the United States. The writings of Matthew Arnold, John Stuart Mill, William Morris, John Henry Newman, and John Ruskin, as well as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Walt Whitman, were saturated with imagery and ideas directly indebted to the book. Past and Present also provided novelists and poets with an enduring vision of the ubiquitous rot that lay at the heart of 'laissez-faire' England. The repercussions of Carlyle's unique analysis can be witnessed in the literary form and thematic content of such works as Charles Dickens's Christmas Carol (1843), Dombey and Son (1848), Bleak House (1852-53), and Hard Times (1854); Benjamin Disraeli's Sybil (1845); Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton (1848) and North and South (1855); and Charles Kingsley's Alton Locke (1850). Poets such as Alfred Tennyson in Maud (1855), Elizabeth Barrett Browning in Aurora Leigh (1856), and Arthur Hugh Clough in The Latest Decalogue (1862) built a vocabulary that was steeped in the outrage and indignation of Carlyle's polemic. The artist Ford Madox Brown attempted in his painting Work (1852-65) to give visual testimony to the profound social schisms that Carlyle had exposed in Past and Present and to pay tribute to the 'Sage' who had 'moulded a nation to his pattern.'
Sartor Resartus is Thomas Carlyle's most enduring and influential work.
