Studying at the University of California at Berkeley during the 1960s, he explored ceramics and was introduced to glassblowing. Unsatisfied by the limited techniques practiced in American studio glass at that time, Marquis went to the island of Murano, near Venice, to observe and work with the masters of a glassblowing tradition acknowledged as the best in the world. Freely sharing the techniques he learned in Venice, Marquis has demonstrated and taught throughout the U.S., Europe, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. The effect of Venetian glassblowing techniques on American studio glass enabled glass artists to expand their technical vocabularies and, combined with new and experimental approaches, led to the redefinition of glass as an artistic medium. As an artist, Marquis is admired for his sophisticated understanding of color and form as much as for his humor and willingness to experiment. As a glassblower, he has influenced an entire generation of artists working in glass who aspire to his technical mastery and the originality of his voice. He lives on an island in Puget Sound.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49710390444305,"sku":"CIN029597687XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50324909031697,"sku":"CIN029597687XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/029597687X.jpg?v=1750844219"},{"product_id":"venice-and-american-studio-glass-book-tina-oldknow-9788857243870","title":"Venice and American Studio Glass","description":"After \u003ci\u003eGlass from Finland in the Bischofberger Collection, The Glass of Architects. Contemporary Glass Sculptures and Panels presents the work of 68 artists in the collection of The Corning Museum of Glass; what this diverse group of established and emerging artists share is an experimental approach to glass that transcends the material's traditional association with the decorative arts. Through their investigations of material and ideas, they have encouraged the development of glass-throughout the late twentieth century and into the early years of the twenty-first century-as a medium for sculpture and painting. This generously illustrated volume features the work of a range of international artists, including Larry Bell, Howard Ben Tre, Dale Chihuly, Vaclav Cigler, Brian Clarke, Jun Kaneko, and Robert Rauschenberg. These massive volumes of glass are married with elaborately engineered steel elements. Koss casts molten glass directly from the hot furnace, working with teams of highly-skilled assistants and rigging together intricate systems for transporting his finished abstract works for display in museums, galleries and public spaces. The artistic works deal with the self-sacrificing work of the American farmers in whose milieu the artist grew up. The first monograph published on the work of this groundbreaking glass artist features Koss's most important achievements and, through insightful essays by curators and critics, places them in historic perspective.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52687358918929,"sku":"NLS9783897905542","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783897905542.jpg?v=1762330267"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-tina-oldknow.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
