Since the nineteenth century, foreign tourists and resident tourism workers in Africa have mutually relied upon notions of exoticism, but from vastly different perspectives. Many of the countless tourists who have traveled to the African continent fail to acknowledge or even realize that skilled African artists in the tourist industry repeatedly manufacture \"authentic\" experiences in order to fulfill foreigners' often delusional, or at least uninformed, expectations. These carefully nurtured and controlled performances typically reinforce tourists' reductive impressions—formed over centuries—of the continent, its peoples, and even its wildlife. In turn, once back in their respective homelands, tourists' accounts of their travels often substantiate, and thereby reinforce, prevailing stereotypes of \"exotic\" Africa. Meanwhile, Africans' staged performances not only impact their own lives, primarily by generating remunerative opportunities, but also subject the continent's residents to objectification, exoticization, and myriad forms of exploitation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49738066952465,"sku":"NGR9780821424339","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0821424335.jpg?v=1754894404"},{"product_id":"sports-in-africa-past-and-present-book-todd-cleveland-9780821424254","title":"Sports in Africa, Past and Present","description":"These groundbreaking essays demonstrate how Africans past and present have utilized sports to forge complex identities and shape Africa's dynamic place in the world.  Since the late nineteenth century, modern sports in Africa have both reflected and shaped cultural, social, political, economic, generational, and gender relations on the continent. Although colonial powers originally introduced European sports as a means of \"civilizing\" indigenous populations and upholding then current notions of racial hierarchies and \"muscular Christianity,\" Africans quickly appropriated these sporting practices to fulfill their own varied interests. This collection encompasses a wide range of topics, including women footballers in Nigeria, Kenya's world-class long-distance runners, pitches and stadiums in communities large and small, fandom and pay-to-watch kiosks, the sporting diaspora, sports pedagogy, sports as resistance and as a means to forge identity, sports heritage, the impact of politics on sports, and sporting biography.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49740434506001,"sku":"NGR9780821424254","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0821424254.jpg?v=1761389478"},{"product_id":"alluring-opportunities-book-todd-cleveland-9781501768316","title":"Alluring Opportunities","description":"Alluring Opportunities examines the lives of African laborers in the tourism industry in the Portuguese colony of Mozambique and the social ascension that many of these workers achieved in spite of demanding conditions. From the origin of the colonial period until its end in 1975, the tourism industry developed on the backs of these laborers and ultimately became an important source of foreign exchange for Portugal.   Todd Cleveland explores the daily experiences of local tourism workers in the genesis and expansion of this vital industry with an analytical utility that transcends Africa's borders by complicating the narrative established and reinforced by an expansive body of literature that stresses the exploitation of indigenous tourism workers. He argues that just as foreign tourists embraced the opportunity to travel to various locations in Mozambique, so too did many Indigenous laborers seize opportunities for employment in the tourism industry in an effort to realize social mobility via both the steady wages that they earned and their daily interactions with sojourning clientele.    Alluring Opportunities reconstructs these workers' lives, highlighting their critical contributions to the local industry, while also prompting a reconsideration of Indigenous labor and social mobility in colonial Africa. As a result, Cleveland reveals new ways of thinking, more broadly, about the ways that tourism shapes processes of empire, interracial interactions, and power relations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49749631238417,"sku":"NGR9781501768316","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50387011272977,"sku":"CIN150176831XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50959338701073,"sku":"CIN150176831XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/150176831X.jpg?v=1758966963"},{"product_id":"sports-in-africa-past-and-present-book-todd-cleveland-9780821424513","title":"Sports in Africa, Past and Present","description":"Through the prism of sports and from a range of scholarly perspectives, this anthology offers insight into the varied and shifting experiences of African athletes, fans, communities, and postcolonial states.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49786794213649,"sku":"CIN0821424513VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0821424513.jpg?v=1761390214"},{"product_id":"following-the-ball-book-todd-cleveland-9780896803145","title":"Following the Ball","description":"With Following the Ball, Todd Cleveland incorporates labor, sport, diasporic, and imperial history to examine the extraordinary experiences of African football players from Portugal's African colonies as they relocated to the metropole from 1949 until the conclusion of the colonial era in 1975.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50372066083089,"sku":"CIN0896803147G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0896803147.jpg?v=1761388768"},{"product_id":"stones-of-contention-book-todd-cleveland-9780821421000","title":"Stones of Contention","description":"Stones of Contention explores the major developments in the remarkable history of Africa's diamonds, from the earliest stirrings of international interest in the continent's mineral wealth in the first millennium A.D. to the present day.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50589209428241,"sku":"CIN082142100XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50945259831569,"sku":"CIN082142100XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52327124107537,"sku":"NLS9780821421000","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52740349690129,"sku":"NIN9780821421000","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/082142100X.jpg?v=1761386659"},{"product_id":"diamonds-in-the-rough-book-todd-cleveland-9780821421345","title":"Diamonds in the Rough","description":"Diamonds in the Rough explores the lives of African laborers on Angola's diamond mines from the commencement of operations in 1917 to the colony's independence from Portugal in 1975.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52327127089425,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52327127843089,"sku":"NLS9780821421345","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780821421345.jpg?v=1761390536"},{"product_id":"accessible-africa-book-todd-cleveland-9781475874570","title":"Accessible Africa","description":"Accessible Africa: Teaching and Learning About an Unfamiliar Pastprovides educators ranging from middle school to high school an accessible account of the major developments in African history, paired with pedagogical strategies and approaches related to teaching the continent’s past. Based on decades of teaching African history at the collegiate and high school levels, it became clear to Cleveland and Panzer that most students had learned very little about Africa – beyond the Transatlantic Slave Trade – prior to arriving in their classrooms. This absence is not surprising, as educators readily admit that they do not feel comfortable teaching about Africa because they feel both unqualified and uninformed. Accessible Africa addresses these issues by providing both accessible content and associated teaching strategies related toroughly the past 5,000 years of African history, up to and including contemporary developments on the continent. Reflecting this relative lack of sporting success, African Olympians-aside from elite Kenyan distance runners-rarely register in the minds of even the most dedicated followers of the Games. Yet for all their seeming invisibility on the Olympic landscape, African states, athletes, and officials have long been “winning” at the Olympics, albeit often far removed from the medal podium.  Africa and the Olympics shows how African actors have achieved these nonsporting victories and examines how they have used the Olympics to engage in transformative political activity, realize social mobility, and enhance the quality of life for individuals, communities, and entire nations. In tracing these historical and contemporary processes and the motivations that underlie them, the book complicates reductive notions of the Olympics as solely a sporting competition and instead considers Africa’s engagement with the Games as a series of opportunities to improve personal, communal, ethnic, national, and even continental plights.  If few sports fans have thought extensively about Africa and the Olympics, scholars have been only slightly more engaged with the subject. Most of this scholarship focuses on the International Olympic Committee’s ban of apartheid South Africa from 1964 to 1988. Other works that consider the Olympics more broadly tend to deal with Africa only summarily, further reducing its already low profile. As a result, the academic literature resembles a patchwork of circumscribed studies dispersed in a range of fields and disciplines. Not since the publication of Africa at the Olympics almost fifty years ago has a single volume featured a comprehensive history of the continent and the Games. This book both updates and expands previous work and, most importantly, reframes the analytical engagement with this topic.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53197754925329,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53197755318545,"sku":"CIN089680352XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780896803527.jpg?v=1772576490"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-todd-cleveland.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
