Now an inland backwater, Richborough once overlooked the strategically important Wantsum sea channel, which divided the Isle of Thanet from Kent. In AD 43 the Roman Emperor Claudius's invasion fleet landed and established a fortified beachhead. It became a military supply base, and from this developed the port of Rutupiae with an ampitheatre and one of the biggest monumental arches in the Roman Empire: an official 'gateway to Britain'. The town thrived for nearly 200 years until attacks from Saxon and Frankish raiders prompted the building of a massive fort. A new Roman fort was also built at Reculver. Both were incorporated into the Saxon Shore - a chain of fortifications defending the coast. Together the two forts guarded either end of the Wantsum Channel. At the every end of the Roman occupation of Britain in the late fourth century, Richborough was the last British site to which Roman coins were supplied, and thousands have been found here. The abandoned fort at Reculver took on a new identity as the setting fro an important Anglo-Saxon monastery, and the remains of the church still dominate the coastline today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49534329258257,"sku":"GOR005120279","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50907917418769,"sku":"GOR008373261","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1848020732.jpg?v=1751248687"},{"product_id":"birdoswald-roman-fort-book-tony-wilmott-9780752419138","title":"Birdoswald Roman Fort","description":"This book tells the story of 1,800 years in the life of a fort on Hadrian's Wall, from its construction in a boggy wood as part of the Emperor Hadrian's frontier in the AD 120s to the lottery-funded study centre opened in 1999.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49539007512849,"sku":"GOR005604508","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49921173684497,"sku":"GOR001972449","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50362684670225,"sku":"CIN0752419137G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50767720808721,"sku":"GOR009681019","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752419137.jpg?v=1764064815"},{"product_id":"roman-amphitheatre-in-britain-book-tony-wilmott-9780752441238","title":"The Roman Amphitheatre in Britain","description":"This is the first study of all the Roman amphitheatres in Britain, and it draws on very recent excavations at Chester, London and Silchester. Tony Wilmott describes every amphitheatre, amphitheatre-type structure and mixed theatre\/amphitheatre structure in the province. He discusses the different types - rural, military and urban - and explores whether such differences are significant in terms of the uses to which the buildings were put. He then focuses on the participants in the arena spectacles - the gladiators and the animals. New evidence on the identity and behaviour of spectators is discussed. Accompanying illustrations come from inscriptions, paintings, mosaics and artefacts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49706786029841,"sku":"GOR013770771","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50105795674385,"sku":"GOR005911036","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51838196777233,"sku":"GOR014420063","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/075244123X.jpg?v=1750744304"},{"product_id":"roman-amphitheatres-and-spectacula-a-21st-century-perspective-book-tony-wilmott-9781407304267","title":"Roman Amphitheatres and Spectacula: a 21st-Century perspective","description":"This book includes papers from the international conference held at Chester, England, in February 2007 on Roman Amphitheatres and Spectacular.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51285971370257,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51285972877585,"sku":"NIN9781407304267","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52424076656913,"sku":"NLS9781407304267","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1407304267.jpg?v=1750825511"},{"product_id":"late-roman-transition-in-the-north-book-tony-wilmott-9781841710631","title":"The Late Roman Transition in the North","description":"The wish of the editors was to bring together a number of individuals who had worked on evidence for the late Roman transition in north Britain in order to compare results, and to attempt to identify common ground, differences, and potential approaches for future research. In order to cover a range of views on the subject, the speakers included excavators (Ferris, Jones, Wilmott and Wilson), specialists in the areas of finds, ceramics, and environmental studies (Cool, Evans, Huntley and Stallibrass), and academics with a specialist interest in the late Roman transition (Dark and Esmonde-Cleary). The area studied is bisected by a national boundary, on each side of which archaeological agendas with different emphases are pursued, and the subject has been seen either as the end of the concern of the Romanist or the beginning of the concern of the medievalist. It is only in relatively recent years that the transition has been recognised widely as a separate study in its own right for which it is necessary to deploy evidence from a great variety of specialisms. As the papers presented here largely represent summaries of work in progress or overviews of work to date they are intended to provoke debate and hopefully act as a springboard for new work, both by the authors and others.
