Written with a compulsion for lucidity that transforms outrage into clarity, Book of the Other resists the luxury of metaphor to write about the experience of being shut out, shut down and othered as a queer, working-class teacher, immigrant and refugee. What emerges from Tran’s sharp-eyed experiments in language and form is an achingly beautiful acknowledgment of the estrangement from self forced upon those seduced by the promise of color-blind acceptance and the rigorous, step by step act of recollection needed to find one's way home to oneself. Truong Tran was born in Saigon, Vietnam, in 1969. He is the author of six previous collections of poetry, The Book of Perceptions, Placing the Accents, Dust and Conscience, Within the Margins, Four Letter Words and 100 words (coauthored with Damon Potter). He also authored the children’s book Going Home Coming Home, and an artist monograph, I Meant to Say Please Pass the Sugar. He is the recipient of the Poetry Center Prize, the Fund for Poetry Grant, the California Arts Council Grant and numerous San Francisco Arts Commission Grants. Tran lives in San Francisco where he teaches art and poetry.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49562985955601,"sku":"CIN1885030754A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51057095901457,"sku":"NIN9781885030757","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52126885675281,"sku":"NLS9781885030757","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52153973440785,"sku":"CIN1885030754G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1885030754.jpg?v=1750899443"},{"product_id":"going-home-coming-home-book-truong-tran-9780892392384","title":"Going Home, Coming Home","description":"This summer, Ami Chi is taking a trip to far off Vietnam, where the streets are crowded with zipping scooters and fruit is shaped like dragons and stars. Asian American Studies. The word 'in' appears in this book 186 times. Around this word, as if on its own defiant, self-defining margin, exists a kindred lexicon: intention, indignation, innocence, intact, incomplete, inclusion, invite, incite. Truong Tran, a poet of probing inventiveness, plumbs the possibilities of confessional poetry as no one else can. In this book, he shows identity's 'cruel complexity melting on my tongue.' In his own, inimitable tongue he speaks his grief, outrage, and faithfulness. Troung takes the reader on a journey to the interior: in response, in exile, in the word--Elizabeth Robinson. Truong Tran is the author of WITHIN THE MARGIN, DUST \u0026amp; CONSCIENCE, and PLACING THE ACENTS.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50131053478161,"sku":"CIN0978766733VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50372076470545,"sku":"CIN0978766733G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0978766733.jpg?v=1751267270"},{"product_id":"cbp-book-truong-tran-9780892391790","title":"Cbp","description":"This summer, Ami Chi is taking a trip to far off Vietnam, where the streets are crowded with zipping scooters and fruit is shaped like dragons and stars. Asian American Studies. Truong Tran's work seems to me to be part of a literary undertaking that has both sociological and aesthetic implications. Along with writers like Pamela Lu and Renee Gladman, Tran is advancing the interrelated questions of narration, historiography, and identity and establishing something new in American culture as well as in American literature, DUST AND CONSCIENCE speaks of a cultural position that simultaneously and from the start resists both marginalization and assimilation. The refusal to be displaced or to be incorporated is at the heart of the genre-bending evident in the work--it explains why the writing is, and must be, simultaneously prose and poetry, story and lyric.
