Ceramic tiles have been produced for over 1,000 years in the Islamic world, from Iraq in the ninth century to Turkey in the 19th. The wealth of designs and colours used to decorate mosques, shrines and palaces also became a rich source of inspiration for European artists and designers. This book explains the techniques of the craftsmen including the invention of lustre and the use of blue and white, and traces the development of tilework across a wide geographic area, beginning with the pre-Islamic tradition. Later decorative trends followed those of other forms of Islamic art, ranging from the influence of Chinese ornament to the glorification of the word of God through beautiful calligraphy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49535431704849,"sku":"GOR002893364","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52700821061905,"sku":"GOR008525672","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714114561.jpg?v=1751137118"},{"product_id":"word-into-art-artists-of-the-modern-book-venetia-porter-9780714111636","title":"Word into Art: Artists of the Modern","description":"The exhibition and accompanying book highlight the contemporary art of the Middle East. The works selected which come largely from the collection of the British Museum are published here for the first time. They reflect issues of identity and politics and the rich artistic heritage of the region. One of the underlying themes is various artists' engagement with Arabic as script and language. For some this resonates with the sacred tradition of Islam and Qur'an. For others the Arabic script, whatever their language, is an inalienable part of their inheritance, influencing their identity as artists and intellectuals. The exhibition will demonstrate the variety and power of the ways in which artists of the Middle East have sought to express subjective and political truths through a medium that they themselves have transformed. In doing so they have created new genres owing much to international artistic schools of the 20th and 21st centuries but unmistakably informed by views of their own artistic traditions.  The book, like the exhibition, will look at these works under the following headings: Sacred Script; Art Calligraphy; Artists and Poets; Deconstructing the Word; and Politics and Identity. It will explain the context of the works and provide translations of texts where appropriate.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49567499452689,"sku":"GOR005601020","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50555267907857,"sku":"GOR006678747","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714111635.jpg?v=1751200248"},{"product_id":"art-of-hajj-the-book-venetia-porter-9780714111797","title":"Art of Hajj, The","description":"The annual ritual pilgrimage to Makkah was established by the Prophet Muhammad in the last year of his life (AD 632). Appearing in a variety of shapes and sizes, as one-offs or small print editions, books offer artists and poets a novel form of expression. In the words of Indian artist Nalini Malani (b. 1946), the book is ‘a carrier of experience’, in which whole worlds are encapsulated.    In this beautifully produced book, works made by artists from Beirut to Tunis and beyond highlight the relationship between artists and writers and the influences that inform their work, from family to politics and everything in between. Lebanese artist Abed Al Kadiri (b. 1984) conceived his book during the first month of the pandemic to explore his family history, while through the eyes of Iraqi artist Kareem Risan (b. 1960) we see the shocking aftermath of a deadly explosion on the streets of Baghdad in 2005.    These artists also find inspiration in classical poetry and literature. Some of their works respond to and are informed by the medieval Persian poetry of Rumi and Hafez, as well as the tales of The Thousand and One Nights.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49747149390097,"sku":"NGR9780714111971","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50913592901905,"sku":"GOR014119348","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52815579349265,"sku":"CIN071411197XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52952282661137,"sku":"GOR014665232","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/071411197X.jpg?v=1750817235"},{"product_id":"hajj-book-venetia-porter-9780861591930","title":"The Hajj","description":"Following on the British Museum’s critically acclaimed exhibition Hajj: journey to the heart of Islam, this volume provides over thirty papers on the history and significance of the Hajj, spanning history, politics, archaeology, pilgrims’ journeys, art, architecture, photography and material culture. The contemporary art of the Middle East and North Africa is rich and vibrant. Whether living in their countries of birth or in diaspora, the featured artists are part of the globalised world of art. Here we see artists responding to and making work about their present, histories, traditions and cultures, reflecting on a part of the world that has experienced extraordinary change in living memory.  The British Museum has been acquiring the work of Middle Eastern and North African artists since the 1980s, and the collection – principally works on paper – is one of the most extensive in the public sphere. Collected within the context of a museum of history, the works offer insights into the nature of civil societies, the complex politics of the region, and cultural traditions in their broadest sense, from the relationship with Islamic art, to the deep engagement with literature.  The introduction to the book by curator Venetia Porter explores the history of the collection and the works included. The essential framework for understanding the politics and context within which the artists are working is provided by Charles Tripp’s essay. The works are grouped into seven chapters, each beginning with a short introduction. The authors explore the selection within themes such as faith, abstraction and the female gaze.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50944335905041,"sku":"GOR011399171","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51257123143953,"sku":"NGR9780714111957","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714111953.jpg?v=1751231423"},{"product_id":"ahmed-mater-book-venetia-porter-9781861543189","title":"Ahmed Mater","description":"An illuminating look at one of the Middle Easts most fascinating contemporary artists, this survey is the first to explore the extraordinary life and work of Saudi artist, Dr Ahmed Mater. The finds consist of over 400 gold coins of the Sa‘dian Sharifs of Morocco in addition to ingots, jewellery as well as other items including Dutch pewter and pottery subsequently acquired by the British Museum. Although the ship has not survived, the divers discovered remnants of wood, rope and lead that were parts of its infrastructure. The finds from this shipwreck are significant for several reasons: the gold is clearly a bullion hoard and the number of Sa‘dian coins within it offer new insights into the numismatic history of the period. In addition, examples of 16th−17th century Moroccan jewellery from this period rarely survive in datable contexts. Alongside these gold items are objects which provide a fascinating insight into everyday life on board ship, including personal possessions and the rare survival of resin-coated pills and faba beans.  Whilst there was much debate at the time of discovery about the origin and identity of the ship, it became clear from analysis of the objects that a Dutch origin was the most likely. Research undertaken for this publication has now revealed the identity of the ship – the Dom van Keulen, a Dutch trading ship which is reported to have sunk off the coast of Salcombe in 1633. This multi-authored book therefore not only offers a detailed record of the find and the process of recovery, but provides important context for the history of the period: the fabulous wealth and architecture of the Sa ‘dian Sharifs, the trade in African gold as well as tangible evidence of a flourishing maritime trade in the 17th century, connecting Morocco, the Low Countries and Britain.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53099692720401,"sku":"NGR9780861592388","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780861592388.jpg?v=1770248287"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-venetia-porter.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
