Imprisoned women are far more likely than their male counterparts to be the primary caretakers of children before their incarceration, and are far more likely to intend to reunify with their children upon their release from incarceration. This book focuses on the role of mothering in women’s desistance from criminal behaviour. Drawing on original research, this book explores the nature of mothering during incarceration, how mothers maintain a relationship with their children from behind bars and the ways in which mothering makes desistance more or less likely after incarceration. It outlines the ways in which race, gender, class, nationality, sexuality, gender identity, and other characteristics affect mothering and desistance, and explores the tensions between individual and system-level factors in the consideration of desistance. This book suggests that any discussion of desistance, particularly for women, must move beyond the traditional focus on individual characteristics and decision-making. Such a focus overlooks the role played by context and systems which undermine both women's attempts to be mothers and their attempts to desist. By contrast, in the tradition of Beth Richie’s Compelled to Crime, this book explores both the trees and the forests, and the quantum in-between, in a way that aims for lasting societal and individual changes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50697835577617,"sku":"NGR9780367583828","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51110613090577,"sku":"NIN9780367583828","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52531764658449,"sku":"NLS9780367583828","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367583828.jpg?v=1751102788"},{"product_id":"intersectional-feminist-criminology-book-venezia-michalsen-9780520380295","title":"Intersectional Feminist Criminology","description":"Decentering men from the field of criminology, this pathbreaking book brings to bear a sweeping body of contemporary intersectional feminist work to disrupt the entire discipline. Women have been largely absent from criminological theory, research, policy, and practice. This fresh, conversational book critiques the field's dominant theories by analyzing gendered patterns of perpetration and victimization and switching up traditional criminological perspectives on characteristics such as race and queerness. Designed as a rebuttal to traditional criminology textbooks, the book mirrors standard course content through an intersectional feminist lens, offering students a valuable opportunity to question the field's underpinnings and forge a new path to understanding the true meaning of justice.     Organized in fourteen chapters, each chapter includes a review of the topics covered in traditional criminology textbooks for that topic, critical perspectives on the topic, critical thinking breaks, and recommended additional reading. Intersectional Feminist Criminology is a timely intervention and companion to the curriculum that helps to imagine a new world and ultimately lays out a clear abolitionist vision as an alternative to the American criminal legal system.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51202021490961,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51202022277393,"sku":"NGR9780520380295","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0520380290.jpg?v=1751391873"},{"product_id":"intersectional-feminist-criminology-book-venezia-michalsen-9780520380288","title":"Intersectional Feminist Criminology","description":"This pathbreaking book brings to bear a sweeping body of contemporary intersectional feminist work to disrupt the entire discipline of criminology. Women have been largely absent from criminological theory, research, policy, and practice.
