Many were built locally - the Bristol Channel pilot cutters have a legendary reputation right across the world; seventeen original vessels still exist and modern ones are still being built. John Cabot set sail from Bristol in the Matthew and reached America, while, at the other end of the scale, there are the small double-ended Somerset flatners fishing Bridgewater Bay. At least three famous Antarctic exploration vessels loaded Welsh coal before heading south. The story of Scott's Terra Nova is well known and the Scotia, which pioneered Antarctic exploration, was later wrecked and burnt out on Sully Island.Bringing the story up to date is Challenge Wales, an around-the-world racing yacht now based in Cardiff and active in sail training and youth activity. In between are a whole host of unsung vessels of all sizes, each with their own tale to tell.Sailing Ships of the Bristol Channel brings all this salt-stained heritage, courage and tenacity into one colourful and highly readable volume; maritime history is in our blood and this book will enrich it.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49527351476497,"sku":"GOR009081380","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445664003.jpg?v=1777714468"},{"product_id":"sailing-gaffers-book-viv-head-9780704373297","title":"Sailing Gaffers","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49625225724177,"sku":"GOR006334031","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51796949500177,"sku":"GOR011385045","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0704373297.jpg?v=1751262759"},{"product_id":"policing-south-wales-docks-book-viv-head-9781445673660","title":"Policing South Wales Docks","description":"Alongside the emergence of the railways in the nineteenth century came a huge expansion of docks and shipping. Worldwide demand for Welsh steam coal also saw a population explosion in the towns of Newport, Cardiff, Penarth, Barry and Swansea. Foreign seamen, ship owners, opportunists, thieves and vagabonds all came in search of a share in the new prosperity. It resulted in hard-living overcrowded communities where drunkenness, prostitution, thieving, violence and murder flourished. Embryo Borough police forces were stretched to the limit and beyond to deal with it.Each of these coal ports formed their own police forces to deal with the mayhem. Like needed to be met with like; it was not a job for the fainthearted. The Bute Dock Police went out on patrol armed with cutlasses; and two of its officers drowned on duty on separate occasions, one in particularly suspicious circumstances. Strikes, two world wars, organised crime and drugs were all part of the story. In 1923, the railway amalgamations meant that for the next twenty-five years it was the GWR Police who kept a grip on the docks, followed, in 1948, by the British Transport Police - the first national police force in Britain.Following privatisation, the police were withdrawn from the docks in 1985. And so it was that after 125 years of continuous police service, the last dock copper took off his helmet, locked the police station door and went on his way. This book tells the story of the dock police in South Wales.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52128520012049,"sku":"GOR009532331","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781445673660.jpg?v=1757491782"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-viv-head.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
