Moreover, it includes contributions on how to promote the climate agenda and biodiversity conservation at the local level. Climate change as a whole and global warming in particular are known to have a negative impact on biodiversity in three main ways. Firstly, increases in temperatures are detrimental to a number of organisms, especially those in sensitive habitats such as coral reefs and rainforests. Secondly, the pressures posed by a changing climate may lead to sets of responses in areas as varied as phenology, range and physiology of living organisms, often leading to changes in their lifecycles (especially but not only in reproduction), losses in productivity or even death. In some cases, the very survival of very sensitive species may be endangered. Thirdly, the impacts of climate change on biodiversity will be felt in the short term with regard to some species and ecosystems, but also in the medium and long term in many biomes. Indeed, if left unchecked, some of these impacts may be irreversible.     Many individual governments, financial institutes and international donors are currently spending billions of dollars on projects addressing climate change and biodiversity, but with little coordination. Quite often, the emphasis is on adaptation efforts, with little emphasis on the connections between physio-ecological changes and the lifecycles and metabolisms of fauna and flora, or the influence of poor governance on biodiversity. As such, there is a recognized need to not only better understand the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, but to also identify, test and implement measures aimed at managing the many risks that climate change poses to fauna, flora and micro-organisms. In particular, the question of how to restore and protect ecosystems from the impact of climate change also has to be urgently addressed.     This book was written to address this need. The respective papers explore matters related to the use of an ecosystem-based approach to increase local adaptation capacity, consider the significance of a protected areas network in preserving biodiversity in a changing northern European climate, and assess the impacts of climate change on specific species, including wild terrestrial animals. The book also presents a variety of case studies such as the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, the effects of climate change on the biodiversity of Aleppo pine forest in Senalba (Algeria), climate change and biodiversity response in the Niger Delta region, and the effects of forest fires on the biodiversity and the soil characteristics of tropical peatlands in Indonesia.   This is a truly interdisciplinary publication, and will benefit all scholars, social movements, practitioners and members of governmental agencies engaged in research and\/or executing projects on climate change and biodiversity around the world.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49737529426193,"sku":"NGR9783319986807","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50023393362193,"sku":"GOR013838186","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52536872435985,"sku":"NLS9783319986807","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3319986805.jpg?v=1751189627"},{"product_id":"sustainable-agriculture-and-food-security-book-walter-leal-filho-9783030986162","title":"Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security","description":"Supporting Sustainable Agriculture.- The concept of sustainable agriculture.- Agriculture-food nexus. It emphasizes the urgency of immediate and more ambitious action to address climate risks. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), human-induced climate change is known to be causing dangerous and widespread disruptions in nature and is affecting the lives of billions of people around the world, despite efforts to reduce the risks. Climate change is also negatively influencing health and is mounting threat to our wellbeing and a healthy planet.    The world is also facing significant climate hazards over the next two decades, with global warming expected to soon reach 1.5°C. Even temporarily exceeding this warming level will result in additional severe impacts, some of which may be irreversible. There is therefore a perceived need for publications which may foster a greater understanding of how climate changeconnects to human health and the role played by hazards in this context. It is against this background that this book is being prepared.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51061851488529,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51061854273809,"sku":"NIN9783031265914","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52662588571921,"sku":"NLS9783031265914","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031265912.jpg?v=1751415305"},{"product_id":"addressing-the-challenges-in-communicating-climate-change-across-various-audienc-book-walter-leal-filho-9783319982939","title":"Addressing the Challenges in Communicating Climate Change Across Various Audiences","description":"This book offers a concrete contribution towards a better understanding of climate change communication. Its impacts are manifold and vary from sea level rise (especially relevant to those living in coastal areas), to the increased frequency of extreme events such as cyclones and storm surges, which not only poses problems to property and infrastructure, but also to human health. Climate change is also associated with damages to the physical and natural environment, as well as to biodiversity.  According to the 5th Assessment Report produced by the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), many geographical regions across the world are moderately or highly vulnerable to climate change, whose impacts may be further exacerbated by other human-induced pressures. The above state of affairs illustrates the need for a better and more holistic understanding of how climate change affects countries and regions on the one hand, but also on how the many problems itcauses may be managed on the other, vis-a-vis a better ability to adapt. There is also a perceived need to showcase successful examples of how to duly address and manage the many social, economic and political problems posed by climate change around the world, in order to replicate and even upscale the successful ones. It is against this background that the Handbook of Climate Change Management has been produced. It contains papers prepared by scholars, social movements, practitioners and members of governmental agencies, undertaking research and\/or executing climate change projects, and working with communities across all geographical regions. The latest evidences from scientific studies and official documents produced by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) show that the challenges posed by climate change need to be taken seriously if they are ever to be tackled properly. It is widely acknowledged that information, communication and education on climate change are important tools in the search for solutions to the social, economic or political problems climate changes poses. But despite the fact that much has been written about climate change, most works to date tend to focus on specific issues (e.g. climate modeling, forecasts) as opposed to addressing the problem in an interdisciplinary way as it should be. This book tries to address this perceived gap by providing a wide range of perspectives on climate change, which goes over and above the traditional barriers seen among subjects. It is interdisciplinary in nature and comprehensive in scope. This book was prepared in the context of «Climate 2008» (www.klima2008.net), the world’s first scientific conference on climate change held on the internet, and is one of the first outputs of the newly-created «International Climate Change Information Programme» (ICCIP). It introduces evidences from studies and projects which show how climate change adaptation is being - and may continue to be successfully implemented in African countries. Thanks to its scope and wide range of themes surrounding climate change, the ambition is that this book will be a lead publication on the topic, which may be regularly updated and hence capture further works. Climate change is a major global challenge. However, some geographical regions are more severly affected than others. One of these regions is the African continent. Due to a combination of unfavourable socio-economic and meteorological conditions, African countries are particularly vulnerable to climate change and its impacts.     The recently released IPCC special report \"Global Warming of 1.5º C\" outlines the fact that keeping global warming by the level of 1.5º C is possible, but also suggested that an increase by 2º C could lead to crises with crops (agriculture fed by rain could drop by 50% in some African countries by 2020) and livestock production, could damage water supplies and pose an additonal threat to coastal areas. The 5th Assessment Report produced by IPCC predicts that wheat may disappear from Africa by 2080, and that maize— a staple—will fall significantly in southern Africa. Also, arid and semi-arid lands are likely to increase by up to 8%, with severe ramifications for livelihoods, poverty eradication and meeting the SDGs. Pursuing appropriate adaptation strategies is thus vital, in order to address the current and future challenges posed by a changing climate.     It is against this background that the \"African Handbook of Climate Change Adaptation\" is being published. It contains papers prepared by scholars, representatives from social movements, practitioners and members of governmental agencies, undertaking research and\/or executing climate change projects in Africa, and working with communities across the African continent. Encompassing over 100 contribtions from across Africa, it is the most comprehensive publication on climate change adaptation in Africa ever produced.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51607829971217,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51607830135057,"sku":"NIN9783030451059","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030451054.png?v=1751415150"},{"product_id":"climate-change-strategies-handling-the-challenges-of-adapting-to-a-changing-clim-book-walter-leal-filho-9783031287305","title":"Climate Change Strategies: Handling the Challenges of Adapting to a Changing Climate","description":"This book includes information, experiences, practical initiatives and projects around the subject matter and makes it available to a wide audience. In recent years, the need for sustainable development has become increasingly evident across various sectors globally. Climate change, resource depletion, and social inequalities pose significant challenges that demand urgent and comprehensive action. The concept of sustainable development is not merely an environmental concern; it encompasses economic, social, and governance dimensions, necessitating a holistic approach to address these interlinked issues effectively.    It seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical frameworks and practical applications, offering insights that are relevant to policymakers, educators, business leaders, and individuals committed to sustainability. The genesis of this book lies in the recognition that achieving sustainable development is contingent upon building and enhancing competencies at multiple levels—individual, organizational, and societal. Competence in sustainable development involves a combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that empower individuals and organizations to contribute effectively to sustainable goals.    One of the key strengths of this book is its multidisciplinary approach. Sustainable development is inherently interdisciplinary, requiring insights from environmental science, economics, social sciences, and management studies. The contributors to this book bring diverse perspectives and expertise, ensuring a rich and nuanced exploration of the subject matter. Furthermore, this book emphasizes the importance of education and training in building competencies for sustainable development. It discusses innovative educational approaches, curricula development, and the role of institutions in fostering a culture of sustainability. The role of technology and digital tools in enhancing sustainable practices is also highlighted, recognizing their potential to drive significant positive change.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51680487866641,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51680488096017,"sku":"NIN9783031803796","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52659947766033,"sku":"NLS9783031803796","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031803795.jpg?v=1751188835"},{"product_id":"amazon-2030-sustainability-issues-in-the-world-s-largest-rainforest-region-book-walter-leal-filho-9783031814648","title":"Amazon 2030 - Sustainability Issues in the World's Largest Rainforest Region","description":"This book examines the socio-economic impacts on the indigenous populations and local communities who depend on the Amazon for their livelihood, culture, and heritage. By presenting contributions which entailed detailed research, expert interviews, and on-the-ground case studies, this book provides an in-depth analysis of the key factors contributing to the Amazon's decline, including deforestation, climate change, and illegal mining, among others. As authors venture into the year 2030, the Amazon Rainforest, often referred to as the planet's lungs, faces unprecedented challenges that threaten its existence and, by extension, the global ecosystem. This book delves into the heart of these issues, offering a comprehensive and poignant exploration of the sustainability crisis in the world's largest rainforest region.  The narrative is structured to guide readers through the intricate web of environmental, economic, and social threads that define the Amazon's current predicament. It begins with an overview of the rainforest's vital role in global biodiversity and climate regulation, setting the stage for a deeper investigation into the threats it faces. Various chapters are dedicated to specific sustainability challenges, such as the expansion of agricultural frontiers, the exploitation of natural resources, and the consequences of political and corporate decisions on conservation efforts. The book also highlights innovative solutions and initiatives underway to preserve and restore the Amazon, showcasing successful conservation projects and sustainable development practices. The book also projects potential future scenarios for the Amazon, emphasizing the urgency of concerted global action to safeguard this irreplaceable natural treasure. It calls for a holistic approach that reconciles economic development with environmental stewardship and respects the rights and knowledge of indigenous peoples. It serves as a clarion call to action, urging readers to consider the legacy authors wish to leave for future generations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51728249717009,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51728250241297,"sku":"NGR9783031814648","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031814649.jpg?v=1770285750"},{"product_id":"implementing-sustainability-in-the-curriculum-of-universities-book-walter-leal-filho-9783319702803","title":"Implementing Sustainability in the Curriculum of Universities","description":"This book presents sustainable development themes across universities and introduces methodological approaches and projects to the teaching staff. Im Rahmen der Umsetzung werden diese Bereiche nicht isoliert, sondern als Synthese verstanden und in ihrer Wechselwirkung und Betrachtungsweise gleichberechtigt behandelt. Aus diesen Gründen stehen Hochschulen und Universitäten in zunehmendem Maße in der Verantwortung, eine multidisziplinäre und ethisch orientierte Form der Ausbildung zu entwickeln. Wie ist es sonst möglich, den wachsenden Problemen, mit denen sich die Menschheit des 21. Jahrhunderts konfrontiert sieht, zumindest ansatzweise zu begegnen? Hochschulen und Universitäten müssen sich mehr als bisher ihrer besonderen Vordenker- und Vorbildsrolle bewusst werden und ihre Möglichkeiten für einen stetigen Transport von Information, Aufklärung und Bildung über die drängenden ökologischen und sozio-ökonomischen Probleme in die Gesellschaft nutzen. Nur so wird es der Menschheit von morgen möglich sein, in einer nachhaltigen und gerechteren Welt zu leben. Dieses Buch verknüpft das Themenfeld «Nachhaltigkeit» mit dem organisatorischen Instrumentarium des Umweltmanagements und soll dazu beitragen, Wichtigkeit und Umsetzbarkeit von Nachhaltigkeitsstrategien noch sichtbarer zu machen. Es gibt zahlreiche Ansätze und Projekte an deutschen Hochschulen, in deren Mittelpunkt Umweltmanagement und\/oder Nachhaltigkeit stehen. Doch nicht alle derartigen Ansätze oder Projekte sind bekannt. The book's primary goals are to document the wealth of experiences in the region available today, to encourage cross-sector interactions among the various stakeholders in the region, and to help transfer results to other countries and regions. Accordingly, it gathers a set of papers presented at a symposium on climate change adaptation held in Fiji in July 2016, focusing on Fostering Resilience and Improving the Quality of Life. In these contributions, local and international experts present a variety of initiatives showing how Pacific countries are coping with the many problems associated with climate change, including initiatives in education and awareness work taking place across the region, operational aspects and their implications for policy-making, and challenges in urban and rural areas.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52131854090513,"sku":"NLS9783319500935","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319500935.jpg?v=1757513077"},{"product_id":"climate-change-adaptation-in-north-america-book-walter-leal-filho-9783319537412","title":"Climate Change Adaptation in North America","description":"This edited book responds to the need for a better understanding of how climate change affects North America and for the identification of processes, methods and tools that may help countries and communities to develop a more robust adaptive capacity. It include papers written by some of the leading specialists in the field of mining and metallurgy, and by environment specialists who are active in this sector. Readers will notice that some common environmental problems seen in the mining and metallurgical industries are described and that their influence on the health of the population are discussed. Examples of best practice in the field are given both from EU countries and from Central and Eastern European nations, especially from the Newly Independent States (NIS). Some of the latest technologies involved in the elimination of hazardous emissions, in sewage treatment and the handling of wastes in the metallurgical and mining industries are presented and we hope that they may open the way for more West-East, East-West and East-East technology and know-how exchange. In preparing this book, thanks are due to Marina Butorina, Linda Doring and Olaf Gramkow for their competent advice in respect of translations, lay-out and handling of the texts. Nevertheless, the main research agenda is being led by some countries, providing a good opportunity for other nations and regions which have not yet been so active, to bring their viewpoints to the global discussion. One of these regions is Latin America.    Consistent with the need for more cross-sectorial and cross-cultural interactions among the various stakeholders working in the field of sustainability in Latin America and beyond, this book pursues two main aims:    a) to provide research institutions, universities, NGOs, government agencies, and enterprises from the region with an opportunity to present their works in the field of sustainability and    b) to document and promote ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of sustainability projects, especially successful initiatives and good practice across the Latin America region. Due to their wealth of experiences and well-organised structure, Australasian universities provide a good example of how to promote sustainability in respect of policy as well as academic practice. In order to succeed and to last, sustainability initiatives must be incorporated into the structures and operational systems of universities. Attended by over 200 delegates from across the Baltic Sea region and beyond, the event provided an important contribution towards strengthening the integration of the region's RTD community and the sharing of knowledge and expertise in the Baltic, across Europe (including the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions) and elsewhere. The first part of this book contains some introductory remarks on sustainable development as a whole and on integratives approaches in particular. Furthermore, issues related to cleaner production and the moves towards zero emissions are outlined. Part two of the book focuses on developments in the Baltic Sea Region, with a special emphasis on policy, implementation technologies and technologies for sustainable development. In the next part of the book, readers will find a special section on science for sustainable development. One special feature of this section is that papers are predominantly written by young researchers, some of whom will find in this volume, for the first time, the chance to publish results from their works. The final section of the book deals with social corporate responsibility and the environment, focusing on sustainable community development, corporate responsibility at an international level and concepts for education for sustainable development. There are many initiatives aimed at the promotion of the sustainable development of river areas around the Baltic and around Europe as a whole, a process greatly accelerated by the introduction of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), which obliges all EU countries to improve the standards in which they use their water and river resources. This book, prepared in the context of the Interreg IB Project Watersketch, is an attempt to promote a dialogue on the topic, linking aspects of sustainable biochemistry and biotechnology with elements of sustainable river management. It will serve the needs of water and river management specialists in two ways: it presents various scientific and technological approaches to river management and illustrates the epistemological breadth of the discipline, and also builds on specialised topical biotechnological and chemistry-related knowledge. It is widely believed that education can play a key role in finding global solutions to many problems related to climate change. Indeed, education as a process not only helps young people to better understand and address the impact of global warming, but also fosters better attitudes and behaviours to aid efforts towards mitigating climate change and adapting to a changing environment. But despite the central importance of education in relation to climate change, there is a paucity of publications on this theme. Against this background, the book focuses on the educational aspects of climate change and showcases examples of research, projects and other initiatives aimed at educating various audiences. Many studies analyzing environmental impacts of food systems confirm significant effects of food production on climate change. Most of them associate primary production with emission of greenhouse gasses identified as one of the causes resulting in warming the atmosphere and global climate effects. A wider perspective shows that the food chains start at farms with consumers being at the end of the pipeline. This approach emphasizes the role of the entire food chain highlighting different kinds of environmental impacts affecting climate change.    On the other side, temperature changes and variations of precipitation patterns, together with extreme weather events and water reduction, are recognized as predictors for producing less food, decreased food quality, new food safety risks, biodiversity losses, and depletion of resources associated with food production in modified circumstances. Last but not least, these effects introduce new threats known as food security where some assumptions stress that almost one billion of people are hungry not receiving enough food as a result of climate changes. As a result, the UN highlights the need for combating climate change and promotes sustainable (food) consumption and production.    Based on the perceived need to promote and disseminate information on climate change related to food system, the “Handbook of Climate change across the food supply chain” is being produced. The publication compiles information, experiences, practical initiatives, and projects around the subject matter and makes it available to a wide audience. It is expected that the “Handbook of Climate change across the food supply chain” makes many benefits of climate service clearer and, inter alia, leads to an increase in the demand for such important services.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52150355591441,"sku":"NLS9783030879334","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030879334.jpg?v=1757609839"},{"product_id":"climate-change-impacts-and-adaptation-strategies-for-coastal-communities-book-walter-leal-filho-9783319707020","title":"Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Strategies for Coastal Communities","description":"This book presents a comprehensive overview of research and projects regarding climate change adaptation in coastal areas, providing government and nongovernment bodies with a sound basis to promote climate change adaptation efforts.According to the 5th Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), coastal zones are highly vulnerable to climate change, and climate-driven impacts may be further exacerbated by other human-induced pressures.  Apart from sea-level rise, which poses a threat to both human well-being and property, extreme events such as cyclones and storm surges lead not only to significant damage to property and infrastructure, but also to salt water intrusion, groundwater salinisation, and intensified soil erosion, among many other problems. There are also numerous negative impacts on the natural environment and biodiversity, including damage to important wetlands and habitats that safeguard the overall ecological balance, and consequently the provision of ecosystem services and goods on which the livelihoods of millions of people depend. As such, there is a need for a better understanding of how climate change affects coastal areas and communities, and for the identification of processes, methods and tools that can help the countries and communities in coastal areas to adapt and become more resilient.  It is against this background that this book has been produced. It includes papers written by scholars, social movements, practitioners and members of governmental agencies, pursuing research and\/or executing climate change projects in coastal areas and working with coastal communities. Focusing on “managing climate change in coastal regions”, it showcases valuable lessons learned from research and field projects and presents best practices to foster climate change adaptation in coastal areas and communities, which can be implemented elsewhere.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52150592798993,"sku":"NLS9783319707020","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319707020.jpg?v=1757610603"},{"product_id":"handbook-of-climate-services-book-walter-leal-filho-9783030368777","title":"Handbook of Climate Services","description":"This book explores climate services, including projections, descriptive information, analyses, assessments, and an overview of current trends.       Due to the pressures now being put on the world’s climate, it is vital to gather and share reliable climate observation and projection data, which may be tailored for use by different groups. In other words, it is essential to offer climate services. But despite the growth in the use of these services, there are very few specialist publications on this topic. This book addresses that need.     Apart from presenting studies and the results of research projects, the book also offers an overview of the wide range of means available for providing and using climate services. In addition, it features case studies that provide illustrative and inspiring examples of how climate services can be optimally deployed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52150711255313,"sku":"NLS9783030368777","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030368777.jpg?v=1757610961"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-walter-leal-filho.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
