But there is much more to the story of shrines and images in Mexico's religious history than Guadalupe and Marian devotion. In this book a distinguished historian brings together his new and recent essays on previously unstudied or reconsidered places, themes, patterns, and episodes in Mexican religious history during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. William Taylor explores the use of local and regional shrines as well as devotion to images of Christ and Mary, including Our Lady of Guadalupe, to get to the heart of the politics and practices of faith in Mexico before the Reforma. Each of these essays touches on methodological and conceptual matters that open out to processes and paradoxes of change and continuity, exposing the symbolic complexity behind the material representations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49731637608721,"sku":"NGR9780826348548","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52660564558097,"sku":"NLS9780826348548","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0826348548.jpg?v=1750914878"},{"product_id":"fugitive-freedom-book-william-b-taylor-9780520397668","title":"Fugitive Freedom","description":"The curious tale of two priest impersonators in late colonial Mexico Cut loose from their ancestral communities by wars, natural disasters, and the great systemic changes of an expanding Europe, vagabond strangers and others out of place found their way through the turbulent history of early modern Spain and Spanish America. The vagabonds and impostors of colonial Mexico are as elusive in the written record as they were on the ground, and the administrative record offers little more than commonplaces about them. Fugitive Freedom locates two of these suspect strangers, Joseph Aguayo and Juan Atondo, both priest impersonators and petty villains in central Mexico during the last years of Spanish rule. Displacement brought pícaros to the forefront of Spanish literature and popular culture—a protean assortment of low life characters, seen as treacherous but not usually violent, shadowed by poverty, on the move and on the make in selfish, sometimes clever ways as they navigated a hostile, sinful world. What to make of the lives and longings of Aguayo and Atondo, which resemble those of one or another literary pícaro? Did they imagine themselves in literary terms, as heroes of a certain kind of story? Could impostors like these have become fixtures in everyday life with neither a receptive audience nor permissive institutions? With Fugitive Freedom, William B. Based on the criminal trial records and related documents from the regions of central Mexico and Oaxaca, it attempts to discover how peasants conceived of their role under Spanish rule, how they behaved under various kinds of street, and how they felt about their Spanish overlords. In examining the character of village uprisings, typical relationships between killers and the people they killed, and the drinking patterns of the late colonial period, the author finds no warrant for the familiar picture of sullen depredation and despair. Landed peasants of colonial Mexico drank moderately on the whole, and mostly on ritual occasions; they killed for personal and not political reasons. Only when new Spanish encroachments threatened their lands and livelihoods did their grievances flare up in rebellion, and these occasions were numerous but brief. The author bolsters his conclusions with illuminating comparisons with other peasant societies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50174839259409,"sku":"CIN0804711127G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52740122411281,"sku":"NIN9780804711128","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52811406246161,"sku":"GOR010969511","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53243953512721,"sku":"CIN0804711127VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0804711127.jpg?v=1757415383"},{"product_id":"colonial-spanish-america-book-william-b-taylor-9780842025737","title":"Colonial Spanish America","description":"Colonial Spanish America is a book of readings about people-people from different worlds who came together to form a society by chance and by design in the years after 1492. During the second half of the eighteenth century, Spain's Bourbon dynasty sought to tighten its control over New World colonies, reform imperial institutions, and change the role of the church and religion in colonial life. As a result, miracles were recognized and publicized sparingly by the church hierarchy, and colonial courts were increasingly reluctant to recognize the events. Despite this lack of official encouragement, stories of amazing healings, rescues, and acts of divine retribution abounded throughout Mexico. Consisting of three rare documents about miracles from this period, each accompanied by an introductory essay, this study serves as a source book and complement to the author's Shrines and Miraculous Images: Religious Life in Mexico Before the Reforma.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50658126332177,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50658126627089,"sku":"NGR9780826349767","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52663310745873,"sku":"NLS9780826349767","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0826349765.jpg?v=1763474663"},{"product_id":"brabham-racecars-1967-1983-book-william-b-taylor-9781902351551","title":"Brabham Racecars 1967-1983","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51349998633233,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51349998862609,"sku":"GOR009775779","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/190235155X.jpg?v=1750726031"},{"product_id":"down-on-parchman-farm-book-william-b-taylor-9780814250235","title":"Down on Parchman Farm","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52099981672721,"sku":"CIN0814250238G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780814250235.jpg?v=1757087965"},{"product_id":"magistrates-of-the-sacred-book-william-b-taylor-9780804736596","title":"Magistrates of the Sacred","description":"This work is an extraordinarily rich account of the social, political, cultural, and religious relationships between parish priests and their parishioners in colonial Mexico. It explores a wide range of issues - the competing interpretations of religious dogma and beliefs, questions of practical ethics and daily behaviour, the texture of social relations in rural communities and the relationship to authority and the state. Parish priests, as agents of the state religion and as intermediaries both between parishioners and higher authorities and between the sacred and the profane, performed a pivotal role in colonial society. This book provides a social history of parish priests at work and examines the wider religious and political culture of their parishes. The book concludes by moving a step beyond the conventional termination of colonial history in 1810 to consider the famed role of parish priests as fighters and leaders in the struggle for Mexican independence.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52100685398289,"sku":"CIN0804736596G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780804736596.jpg?v=1757090508"},{"product_id":"theater-of-a-thousand-wonders-book-william-b-taylor-9781107102675","title":"Theater of a Thousand Wonders","description":"The great many shrines of New Spain have become long-lived sites of shared devotion and contestation across social groups.
