The book argues that the medical profile of the melancholic lover provides an essential context for understanding the characteristic patterns of romance: narrative deferral, epistemological uncertainty, and the endless quest for a quasi-phantasmic beloved. Unlike many recent studies of romance, this book establishes a detailed historical basis for investigating the psychological structure of romance. Wells begins by tracing the development of the medical disorder first known in the Latin west as amor hereos (lovesickness) from its earliest roots in Greek and Arabic medicine to its translation into the Latin medical tradition. Drawing on this detailed historical material, the book considers three important early modern romances: Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata, and Spenser's The Faerie Queene, concluding with a brief consideration of the significance of this literary and medical legacy for Romanticism. Most broadly, the interdisciplinary nature of this study allows the author to investigate the central critical problem of early modern subjectivity in substantially new ways.
Already hailed as brave, emotional, and gorgeously written by Frances Mayes and like a piece of dark chocolate--bittersweet, satisfying, and finished all too soon by Laura Fraser, author of An Italian Affair, this is a unique memoir about the search for identity through love, hunger, and food.
Jim Harrison says, TRAIL OF CRUMBS reminds me of what heavily costumed and concealed waifs we all are. Kim Sunee tells us so much about the French that I never learned in 25 trips to Paris, but mostly about the terrors and pleasure of that infinite octopus, love. A fine book.
When Kim Sunee was three years old, her mother took her to a marketplace, deposited her on a bench with a fistful of food, and promised she'd be right back. Three days later a policeman took the little girl, clutching what was now only a fistful of crumbs, to a police station and told her that she'd been abandoned by her mother.
Fast-forward almost 20 years and Kim's life is unrecognizable. Adopted by a young New Orleans couple, she spends her youth as one of only two Asian children in her entire community. At the age of 21, she becomes involved with a famous French businessman and suddenly finds herself living in France, mistress over his houses in Provence and Paris, and stepmother to his eight year-old daughter.
Kim takes readers on a lyrical journey from Korea to New Orleans to Paris and Provence, along the way serving forth her favorite recipes. A love story at heart, this memoir is about the search for identity and a book that will appeal to anyone who is passionate about love, food, travel, and the ultimate search for self.
The U.S. is not alone in its worries over the quality of its schools and the skills of its workforce. Not a single industrial nation is entirely happy with its education and worker training programs. But in four European countries—France, Britain, Sweden, and West Germany—educators have joined hands with government, industry, and local communities to face the problem head-on. The results of their imaginative initiatives recently were observed firsthand by participants in an equally innovative U.S. project—the West Philadelphia Improvement Corps (WEPIC). Support from the German Marshall Fund of the United States enabled two WEPIC groups-including public school teachers, principals, and administrators, as well as city and state policymakers—to tour some of the best European education, youth employment, and community development programs. SchoolWorks describes what these groups found in Europe. It also profiles a project that is seeking to make West Philadelphia schools the life centers of their communities. Finally, it presents guiding principles for strengthening workforce competence in America, with particular emphasis on those Americans who will make up an increasingly significant portion of our future workforce—young minorities and blacks from our most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Some of these initiatives are new and relatively untested; while others are well established and time-tested. The most interesting among them deal with exporting not as an end in itself but as part of a package of internationally development initiatives. In the struggle to become more internationally competitive and to increase exporting among its small- and medium-sized businesses, the United States has much to learn form its European trading partners. Going Global explores the principles that underlie European programs to help small and medium-sized firms export, and presents practical, policy-oriented guidance for creating high-yield export assistance programs in the United States in tough economic times.
