Somerset Maugham. It is generally agreed to be his masterpiece and to be strongly autobiographical in nature. The Modern Library ranked Of Human Bondage No. 66 on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. The book begins with the death of Helen Carey, the mother of nine-year-old Philip Carey. Philip's father Henry had died a few months before, and the orphan Philip, born with a club foot, is sent to live with his Aunt Louisa and Uncle William Carey. Early chapters relate Philip's experience at the vicarage. Louisa tries to be a mother to Philip, but his uncle takes a cold disposition towards him. Philip's uncle has a vast collection of books, and Philip enjoys reading to find ways to escape his mundane existence. Less than a year later, Philip is sent to a boarding school. His uncle and aunt wish for him to eventually attend Oxford. Philip's disability makes it difficult for him to fit in. Philip is informed that he could have earned a scholarship for Oxford, which both his uncle and school headmaster see as a wise course, but Philip insists on going to Germany. In Germany, Philip lives at a boarding house with other foreigners. Philip enjoys his stay in Germany. Philip's guardians decide to take matters into their own hands and they convince him to move to take up an apprenticeship. William Somerset Maugham (1874 - 1965) was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest paid author during the 1930s.
William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was an English playwright, novelist, and short story writer. He was one of the most popular authors of his era, and reputedly the highest paid of his profession during the 1930s. By 1914 he was famous, with 10 plays produced and 10 published novels. His masterpiece is generally agreed to be Of Human Bondage (1915), a semi-autobiographical novel that deals with the life of the main character Philip Carey, who like Maugham, was orphaned, and brought up by his pious uncle. His last major novel, The Razor's Edge, published in 1944, was a departure for him in many ways. While much of the novel takes place in Europe, its main characters are American, not British. His other works include: Liza of Lambeth (1897), Mrs Craddock (1902), A Man of Honour (1903), The Land of the Blessed Virgin (1905), The Bishop's Apron (1906), Lady Frederick (1907), The Magician (1908), Home and Beauty (1909), The Moon and Sixpence (1919), The Circle (1921), The Trembling of a Leaf (1921), and On a Chinese Screen (1922).

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.

This work is in the public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations. Losing both his parents at age 10, he was raised by a paternal uncle. Maugham eventually trained and qualified as a doctor. The initial print run of his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, published in 1897, sold out so rapidly that Maugham gave up medicine to write full-time. His life was certainly full as the short biography at the end of this book will attest to, but it is also a life full of marvellous works and dedication to his art as 'The Making Of A Saint' reveals.
In 1897, after spending five years at St Thomas's Hospital I passed the examinations which enabled me to practise medicine. While still a medical student I had published a novel called Liza of Lambeth which caused a mild sensation, and on the strength of that I rashly decided to abandon doctoring and earn my living as a writer; so, as soon as I was 'qualified', I set out for Spain and spent the best part of a year in Seville. I amused myself hugely and wrote a bad novel. Then I returned to London and, with a friend of my own age, took and furnished a small flat near Victoria Station. A maid of all work cooked for us and kept the flat neat and tidy. My friend was at the Bar, and so I had the day (and the flat) to myself and my work. During the next six years I wrote several novels and a number of plays. Only one of these novels had any success, but even that failed to make the stir that my first one had made. I could get no manager to take my plays. At last, in desperation, I sent one, which I called A Man of Honour, to the Stage Society, which gave two performances, one on Sunday night, another on Monday afternoon, of plays which, unsuitable for the commercial theatre, were considered of sufficient merit to please an intellectual audience. As every one knows, it was the Stage Society that produced the early plays of Bernard Shaw.
William Somerset Maugham's 'Of Human Bondage' is a profound exploration of the human condition, weaving personal narrative with a rich tapestry of character studies and existential inquiry. Written in a semi-autobiographical style, Maugham draws heavily from his own life experiences to illuminate the themes of love, ambition, and the quest for meaning. The novel is marked by its realism and psychological depth, set against the backdrop of a society grappling with class distinctions and the pursuit of art in the early 20th century. Maugham's intricate prose illuminates the struggles faced by his protagonist, Philip Carey, as he seeks identity and purpose amidst life's complexities and inherent suffering. Maugham himself led a tumultuous life, marked by early childhood challenges and the influence of a diverse cultural upbringing. His experiences as a medical student and his deep engagement with the complexities of human emotions undoubtedly shaped the narrative of 'Of Human Bondage.' Maugham's extensive travels and exposure to various social classes provide a nuanced understanding of the struggles depicted in his work, reflecting both personal longing and broader societal observations. This seminal novel is highly recommended for readers interested in the intricacies of self-discovery and the nature of human relationships. Maugham's sharp insights and emotive storytelling invite readers to reflect on their own bonds, be they of love, duty, or passion. 'Of Human Bondage' stands as a timeless study of the human psyche, making it essential reading for anyone seeking depth in literature.
William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. Set in the final years of the 19th century, Mrs Craddock talks about a young and attractive woman of independent means who marries beneath her. On her 21st birthday, when she comes into her deceased father's money, Bertha Ley announces, to the dismay of her former guardian, that she is going to marry 27-year-old Edward Craddock, her steward. Herself a member of the landed gentry, Bertha has been raised to cultivate an immoderate desire for knowledge and to understand, and enjoy, European culture of both past and present ages. In particular, during long stays on the Continent, she has learned to appreciate Italy's tremendous cultural heritage. A virtuous girl, her views on womanhood are thoroughly traditional. Written in a clear, unadorned prose style, Maugham's narrative unfolds through the life of Philip Carey, a young man grappling with his ambitions, desires, and the inescapable constraints of fate and circumstance. The novel's literary context is set against the backdrop of early 20th-century England, marked by a shift in societal norms and an interplay of existential philosophy, which Maugham navigates deftly to expose the myriad forms of human bondage--be it emotional, social, or psychological. Maugham, a celebrated author known for his keen observational prowess and depictions of complex characters, drew extensively from his own life experiences, including his early struggles with identity and artistic aspiration. His exposure to various cultures and his turbulent relationships fueled the narrative's depth, offering a profound reflection on love, suffering, and the quest for self-understanding. Maugham's background in the literary and theatrical worlds profoundly influenced his writing style, enriching the novel with nuanced emotional tension. This timeless classic is highly recommended for readers intrigued by themes of individuality, resilience, and the universal quest for meaning. Maugham's eloquent prose and psychological insight invite readers to reflect on their own bonds and limitations, making Of Human Bondage not only a compelling read but a vital exploration of life's profound complexities.
William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. Yet now few will be found to deny his greatness. I do not speak of that greatness which is achieved by the fortunate politician or the successful soldier; that is a quality which belongs to the place he occupies rather than to the man; and a change of circum-stances reduces it to very discreet proportions. The Prime Minister out of office is seen, too often, to have been but a pompous rhetorician, and the General without an army is but the tame hero of a market town. The greatness of Charles Strickland was authentic. It may be that you do not like his art, but at all events you can hardly refuse it the tribute of your interest. He disturbs and arrests. The time has passed when he was an object of ridicule, and it is no longer a mark of eccentricity to defend or of perversity to extol him. His faults are accepted as the necessary complement to his merits. It is still possible to discuss his place in art, and the adulation of his admirers is perhaps no less capricious than the disparagement of his detractors; but one thing can never be doubtful, and that is that he had genius. To my mind the most interesting thing in art is the personality of the artist; and if that is singular, I am willing to excuse a thousand faults. I suppose Velasquez was a better painter than El Greco, but custom stales one's admiration for him:

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.

This work is in the public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations.
